Hi. This is the first simple video explaining it. I'm taking lessons ready to sit my CBT but I was making mistakes with the shifting and couldn't quite understand why, the teacher explained it and I understood parts but I think in the enviroment I was over complicating things in my head which I do often. There are a lot of stupidly long videos explaining it but I feel they were over complicating it and making it more confusing. I'm not saying there aren't shorter videos out there that are good but this was honestly one of the better videos out of the lot.

Thank you for this. I have no prior experience with riding a bike or driving a manual car, went for my pre learners recently and in the segment where they ‘teach’ how to shift gears I kept being yelled at without telling me what I did wrong until I asked. Only then I was told I did not close the throttle. Shifting gears improved but now seeing what you actually do on video it makes way more sense. I wish instructors would step through things like you do. A lot of instructors here are riders of many years but not really great at teaching other people, which is sad for newbies like me who want to learn but don’t feel like being given a chance. In my country we can’t learn without a learners permit and getting that requires the knowledge of how to ride on the road. For newbies like me it’s really hard without having someone to teach the ropes and proper basic skills. It’s information and sensory overload for newbies so thank you for breaking things down.

Agree, long time riders don't remember the days of the "obvious" questions such as HOW do u know when to shift and the answer, "you can just tell'. No, I can't tell. "Shifting comes naturally." No, it doesn't. 'Pull up and stop." Um, do I brake then shift down or shift down then brake, or brake and shift down together? These are newb questions I need answers to and most KZfaq creators don't answer.

@@rocketmaam6898exactly! The instructor I had keep saying ‘you just have to get it’ I know I have to get it otherwise why would I be at the school? The issue isn’t I don’t know I have to learn this, the issue is I don’t know what I done wrong and how I can make it right. Watching them ‘demonstrate’ shifting while they riding around a couple of times doesn’t constitute teaching. I watch football all the time doesn’t make me a football player. Asking me why I stalled the bike doesn’t make me stop stalling the bike, neither does yelling at me about a pretend truck just ran me over. How does these people even get accredited to teach is beyond me.

When shifting up, do you engage the clutch before rolling off the throttle, or vice versa? You stated the former process at 4:46, but the latter at 5:00. Also, when you shift up to 2nd gear (and 3rd, and 4th, an so on), do you need to release the clutch as slowly as you did when you put it into first? You looked like you were releasing it much more quickly when shifting into those higher gears.

@@PetroHead well, just the little things, like putting in gear and want to drive away while your kickstand is still down. Do not hit the front break while steering left or right. That sort of things.

Can you start the bike without by engaging opening your throttle while controling the clutch? Or you have to pass the biting point of the clutch before you throttle? I subbed! Great video!

Friction zone then gas but you’ll get to a point where it becomes automatic.

In my country, our roads have lots of speed bumps, and I want to know how to shift gears when approaching them. My motorcycle always stalls when I'm at the bumps, and I'm a beginner in riding motorcycles. Can you please advise on when to change gears when approaching speed bumps?

@jaymeister4490 Shift down into 1st or 2nd gear, pull the clutch when going over speed bumps and let go / give more throttle once over the speed bump.

tbh, I'm really a boring street rider.. I don't do canyons or twisty roads that much... I know myself and I will push too hard so right now, my fave is prob PCH. For fast riding, I hit the track. Plenty of track videos if you wanna see how I ride.

I have the same problem haha. I find letting the clutch out a bit slower helps and rolling off the throttle.
