With current infrastructure and range stick with petrol or diesel

Remember that with a plug-in hybrid, if the engine isn’t used regularly it will deteriorate. Engines need to circulate oil to keep them lubricated and this needs to be done fairly regularly.

When you have exhausted the hybrid savings bit, you are carrying round a load of dead weight extra heavy batteries retuning poor MPG on a long long distance trip.

I went PHEV for day to day use. I don't have home charging but free charging at work. So I can take advantage of the EV and still have the engine for longer runs. The Mitsubishi Outlander is a real bargain used. For just Hydrid the Kia Sportage or Peugeot 3008 are both excellent. I work in car rental so get to drivenloads and also see how reliable they are. I still keep my petrol SLK for fun days.

Great video as usual. I have a Toyota Auris/Corolla Hybrid 1.8. It's a fantastic car, and it gets 67 to 71 mpg highway and 75 to 90 mpg city. Much more economical and cheaper to run than a normal petrol or diesel car.

I bought my present car 13 years ago when it was 5 months old, it's a Smart diesel, it still acheives 85-90mpg even with over 150,000 miles on the clock, back then diesel was the muts nuts, clean, economical and blah blah blah, zero road tax because of the low emissions and clean running, i paid way under £10,000 for it, I combine my driving in the sense that I use my car for getting back and forth to work, my daily commute is 60 miles, I do my monthly shopping on my route home, 80% of my daily commute is motorway driving, now my car is seen as dirty, I have to pay clean air taxes, now that Labour has got into power, no doubt everywhere will have charges, still not one politician has responded as to what cards I need by law to pay these taxes. I did contemplate an electric vehicle but I don't have access to off road parking so no home charging, the infrastructure in the area where I live, one charge point in the town, there was two but one stopped working before COVID, two things put me off, the obvious was the cost of the initial purchase price of a vehicle to cover my mileage, in an ideal world, I would like a small car like i currently own as I live in the centre of town, my car is easy to park in town, the next was that I have never used any form of bank card, I have always paid for everything with cash, again, like the clean air taxes, I would have to pay by card, I have no credit rating, I don't know how to use a card or where to get a card, its been assumed that everyone has a credit card and a computer, I don't. I then looked at hybrid vehicles, again, it's the cost to initially purchase the vehicle, if you can find one, I'm an ordinary working class person, I work an average 15 hour shift, I work nights, hence the need for a small vehicle that's easy to park as the streets are pretty full when I get home from work, I looked at hybrid vehicles, they're less economical than running my current vehicle as they are designed for city/town driving, as I previously mentioned, 80% of my daily commute is motorway driving so a hybrid would probably use double the fuel for my type of use, I also have to be able to purchase the vehicle outright as I will not be accepted for a loan, I have tried, being refused apparently reduces my chances even further for getting a loan, even the bank I use won't approve a loan for me because at 60, even though I'm a home owner, I bought the property from redundancy money, the property was extremely cheap because it required a lot of money to be spent on bringing it up to a living standard, I did all the work without the help of anyone or their money which means that at 60, I am not creditworthy, no card, no electric vehicle, no driving into major cities, no being able to purchase a newer vehicle

I would take a Hybrid Petrol for my daily. A plugin hybrid to be precise as my daily round trips are around 15 miles with 1 40 mile trip every week. But my fun car would most certainly be a petrol.

It does get a little bit of a pain making sure you do use the petrol in the tank every few months or otherwise it goes stale and the car won't like that, other than that PHEVs are the right choice for a lot of people. As for a "fun" car, where can you have fun on UK roads these days, please let me know I'll visit. 🙂

@@st200olI have a track car. Plus I don't know about other places but most of the country roads outside of villages around here are still national speed limit. I live in Shropshire. The only reason I'd get a PHEV over a normal hybrid is because of the 40 mile trip I do every week. If I make sure no to charge it before going, it should use petrol the whole way. Most PHEV's have around 15 miles range right? Work is 4 miles each way

The current cut-off point for new ICE cars is 2035 not 2030 although the Labour Party say they will put it back to 2030, I personally have my doubts about that plus the best compromise is a self charging hybrid, plug-in hybrids are very bad on fuel once the battery is flat after say 30 miles or so as you are carrying around a lot of extra weight. I have a Civic ehev that returns over 60mpg from a 2-litre engine and never needs charging it runs on the electric motor most of the time in town and can give over 80mpg in most urban situations.

I can charge at home (millions can too) it cost me a total of 89p to drive 240 miles to work and back this week, I lease the car for less than the cost of the fuel I used to put in a Diesel car. Yes an EV is the right choice for me.

If I had an EV, I would NEVER have a smart charger installed, that is capable of refusing delivery of power at the will of energy companies or the Government. Can you not see the direction we are going and how car charging will not be allowed, when the wind or sun power are low?

Currently Hybrids are all the go because in Australia most taxis are Hybrid especially Toyota's there are a couple petrol or diesel are Toyota Hiaces for disabled people because Toyota don't build a Hybrid Hiace there is a mild Hybrid Hilux available and EVs deprecate faster than they gone and with the down turn in EV sales they will be gone never ever buy one and only have a ten year life span and in 2035 any Toyota will be absolute fortune that is second hand ones in Australia cost more than a new one because there reliability is much better than other makes apart from lsuzu Mazda Mahindra and Suzuki and we own a Suzuki Baleno and a Toyota Hilux and that is 27 years old

Euro 7 is coming next year July 2025 sadly no ICE cars will the meet Euro 7, Mayor Khan will use it move the emission goal post ban the whole lot, smug EV's owners won't get away escape it, Mayor Khan's will be charging EV owners £5,470 a year to drive in the congestion zone, and ULEZ will be scrapped replaced by Pay-Per-mile road pricing EV's included, it will be introduced cheaply at 15p a mile and like Car Insurance taxes was just 2.5% to get it accepted in the door, car insurance tax has jumped to 12.5% rip off now, road pricing will jump to £1.50 a mile for EV's, one of the main reason ICE car insurance is jumping is when an ICE car bumps an EV the who battery pack needs to be replaced that means the EV becomes to uneconomical to repair is written off so ends up bumping up ICE car insurance as well, and insurances companies are drowning in debt outside the motor insurance business getting motorists to fill the black hole in the finances.

New, cheaper EVs are slowly appearing; to date, many manufacturers have tried to emulate Tesla by targetting the luxury hypercar end of the market; and pricing their cheaper models as mid-range luxury cars - and this has manifestly failed, as only an idiot is going to pay £40,000 for a Vauxhall Corsa. Meanwhile, there are plenty of cheap s/h EVs for sale, that are perfectly suited for urban users doing 10-20 miles per day; older Nissan Leafs are selling for as little as £2500, with 50-60 miles of range remaining - and the possibility to upgrade the battery quite cheaply in the very near future; to get a 250-300 mile car. (CATL replacement battery packs for early Leaf models, now start at £5,000, about the same as a new ICE engine) The guy who "worked out" charging at public charger was more expensive, was cheating; he was counting parking charges and a using a 7KW charger for a very short journey, then multiplying it for everyday use; a 400+ mile trip to Gatwick and back cost me £40 in my 90 mile range EV; didnt take much longer than my last ICE car; and was around £80 cheaper than the fuel cost for that ICE. A common con is to take the most inefficient EV and compare it to a very efficient ICE's best possible MPG, rather than the real life MPG; even the UK government's own transport department allowed this to get through on their car statistics last year, claiming the average new petrol car AVERAGES 70+ MPG. Back to my 7.5 y/o EV; even though my mileage is very low due to my disabilities, it is roughly £300 per month cheaper to run than my last ICE car; this all but covers the cost of the £6,000 loan I took out to buy it, 2 years ago. AFAIK, no EV battery still in production - uses Cobalt. Cobalt is used to desulphurise crude oil, so is vital to petrol, diesel and fuel oil productions; and probably plastics and polymers used in makeup and paint etc - not entirely sure about that though. PS. Dilithium crystals have a better chance of becoming a major fuel for cars, trucks etc, than Hydrogen; which is being pushed by the petrochemical industry as it allows them to maintain their current infrastructure and distribution monopolies.

Yes EV owners get no concessions from Mr Khan anymore as from 25th December 2025 will pay £5,470 a year to drive in London's Congestion zone what a Christmas present, from 2026 Pay-Per-Mile road pricing will replace ULEZ probably introduced cheaply will stabilise at £1.50 a mile the poor ole EV driver will get crippled in London thats before you have even plugged it in, thought about driving it to work every day, obviously will exceptions for rich elites working in the Westminster area whose EV will added to expenses account for free not everybody will pay, sadly the fast majority of Londoner's are being crippled by Starmer's frozen income tax thresholds that are supposed to move up every year with inflation, most London''s simply don't have enough disposable income left over to buy & run expensive EV's in London, can see what's coming our way.

Sorry don't have the money for bog standard mass produced Ford like a £50,750 Mach E basic entry model, £590 road tax for an EV next April that cost over £40,000, arm an a leg amputated to pay for the car insurance, can't afford to lose £25,000 in mortgage like depreciation instantly on a bog standard Ford, especially with Starmer's crippling frozen income tax thresholds that are supposed to go up with inflation, Starmer crippling my disposable income, London Congestion Zone charges £5,475 a year for electric cars from 25th December 2025, ULEZ in London will be replaced in 2026 with £1.50 Pay-Per-Mile road pricing will be imposed on all cars including EV's, if BCG wants to do trip down to Brighton 100 miles each way at £1.50 a mile that's £300 for a day trip to the sea in an EV, WEF want to keep you in their 15 minute city so nobody will do 100 mile trips apart from the elites at Westminster area of London, as the masses are shifted out of cars by taxes the massive UK roadwork repair bills will fall a lot less EV car owners, so will the big black hole in lost ICE car fuel tax/VAT revenue you £590 road tax that coming to majority of these expensive EV's will seem like bargain probably jump 10-fold as the masses are taxed of EV''s road repairs won't be cheap if only elite afford to run a bog standard mass Ford like a £50,750 Mach E base entry model EV.
