It's always annoying when you don't get what you paid for. Air is all around us and free, so if you're going to charge me for it via a machine, you better be sure to deliver what you promise. Today I'll be answering yet another question no one is asking.. How much time on a tyre inflation machine do you really get... the signs say one thing... in reality, it would seem it's not that clear cut.
I'll be conducting a highly scientific experiment to see if petrol stations are really delivering to us, the consumer, what they say they are. Is it another blatant rip off from the oil companies? Perhaps, but more importantly does anyone really care? I dunno.. I found the results of this experiment rather interesting none the less.

In my case, Sainsbury’s WAY overdelivered. I went to one of their petrol stations and found an air compressor (the inner physical air compressor and receiver) standing in a Hippo bag next to the car wash. I asked the staff why it was there, and they told me it was supposed to have been collected as waste as it was not needed after their recent refurbishment. I asked if I could have it, and they referred me to the store manager who told me that if I could remove it, I was welcome to take it. So I took it and now I have a Clarke Air industrial 3hp industrial air compressor in my garage and you wouldn’t believe how handy it is. I can now run all kinds of air tools that my weedy 24 litre home compressor couldn’t. Yes, I had to convert it from 3 phase to single phase for use at home, but that mainly required just a motor change. Full details on a Pistonheads forum thread called “DIY air compressor”, page three or four I think…

In my town for example there are over 110,000 population and only 5 petrol stations within about 10miles radius! So not very much competition for them really! Hense...... We PAY for our air!!

I went to get air once, queued behind the bloke who was there already. He finished up and got back in his car. I waited... waited some more... I politely asked him to move so I could use the machine. He said no; it was his air as he paid for it and didn't want me to have it. I laughed at him, shook my head and got back into my car. He proceeded to stay there until the machine clicked off.

I would suggest making a written complaint to your Local Authority Trading Standards where you have been cheated by these machines and point out that there are multiple instances of this. Neglect by the operators like this not checking they are delivering what they clearly contracted to do must be making them a fortune in the unwitting customers second and perhaps third unnecessary attempts to top up their tyres. I would hope they would do a surprise inspection of the equipment and if they found the timers were clearly set well below the contracted values they posted to their customers that might be viewed as fraud. There is no excuse with the technology these days for inaccurate timing!

AMEN!!! Most garages give free water so why not give free air, the amount of profit these fuel company's make the least they could do is offer free air Also now they are all card payment not cash anymore so I'm sure a lot of people may not have a card or money in account to pay on card so may have to not top up air. For a few years stations were required to provide air for free, as under-inflated tyres are dangerous. For some reason that was overturned, and as soon as it was the price gouging began in earnest. Just prior to the becoming free you would generally buy a token for 20p, which would _usually_ last just about long enough if you were only down a few psi, providing a constant flow of high pressure air you controlled yourself. The self-regulated air-flow of most modern inflators is ludicrously slow on-off affair that has you scrambling around the car to make sure you can do all four tyres. What a surprise that Shell is the biggest rip-off, too.

This will even re-inflate a flat Discovery Series 2 tyre which takes a huge amount of air and twenty minutes, though you are supposed to give the pump a rest in between five minute bursts so it does not overheat. However it inflates a BMW series mini tyre, which is about the same size as an ordinary car tyre these days, in less than the five minute time from flat. Most of the main Lion battery power tool manufacturers sell a similar product so if you already have batteries and charger it is worth getting one of these mini compressors for home use. They are quite small so would occupy little space in the boot. It comes with adaptors for bike tyres, airbeds and footballs as well.

What hacks me off about these machines, is when the hose reel isn’t on s ratchet, and the taught hose tries dragging itself across the bonnet as you try to get near the rear tyres.

Pet peeve, I actually work at a Shell petrol station myself, and often have to help people with the air machine...the hose is an absolute nightmare, I always ask the car owner if they can just hold it whilst I do their tires so it doesn't scratch their car up. I don't know why they don't design it with a hose that hangs from higher up or something or a ratchet like you said. I hate these machines!

Wait, paying to put air in your tyres? How stupid, has the UK gone mad!? I have never seen nor heard of this till now. Correct me if I am wrong, but here in Australia you fill air in your tyres for free at every single service station. The moment the servos try and impalement this, it will be chaos for them. I for one will never pay for air like that. What an absolute scam.

I found much the same with the screenwash dispenser at the BP at the bottom of Folkestone Rd. in Dover. It said 5 litres for a quid I think. I definitely needed some but didn't think I'd get 5 litres in my piddly little reservoir. But I did have a collapsible 5 litre water carrier in the boot. Still in it's packaging awaiting the next camping trip. So I broke out the water carrier, bunged a quid in the machine and let it fill. It clunked off. There was about 2 litres in there! I took it i to the shop & complained. He said "That's 5 litres, we have that machine regularly serviced. There's no markings on that water carrier so how do you know that's not 5 litres eh?" He had that smug "Gotcha!" look on his face. I pulled out the packaging for the water carrier from my back pocket. "This is how I know that that's not 5 litres mate!" His smug face disappeared as I got my money back. I must've done the same thing thrice before they fixed it. They get away with it because no one knows how big their reservoirs are or if they do, they have no idea how much was in there. So they just fill to the brim every time & drive off. Maybe passing on the extra but to the next punter. That water carrier cost me a quid in the Poundshop. But it repayed itself over & over. If you get your screenwash from a machine like that it's well worth checking. And the more of us who do check and reports here and on Twitter (Naming and shaming natch!) then they'll soon get the message! Cheating people out of water & a splash of alcohol is just so nasty! If I was the guy who serviced those machines I'd set it up properly! I said "It

@bigboldbicycle I'm not sure, but I believe it already is in some countries. It's part of the operating licence. Like resteraunts must provide toilets, service stations must provide water and air for free. It's not a legal requirement here in Oz but all the servos still provide it free. Probably because the dangers of running with low pressures are emphasized due to the distances commonly driven here.

Some Australian outlets did try it on for a while in the mid-late 1980s at a few sites , the machines took AUD 20 cent coins (the cost of about 1/3 litre of fuel, and equivalent to about 70c today) The signs said : "clean air, accurate gauges" etc. etc. They didn't last long... :)

A case for trading standards methinks, TS are (I assume) still tasked with confirming correct fuel delivery amounts, they should certainly be looking into this. On a separate note, I'm actually old enough to remember "Giles" cartoons of old when if in a petrol station or garage there was always a sign advertising "free air", probably tongue in cheek, but those were the days of nearly all petrol stations being part of a proper garage workshop with a compressor running all day.

I work for Waitrose in Swaffam Norfolk. We operate a shell petrol station on site with a tyre inflation machine. You enter the PSI you want and connect to your tyres and it cuts off at the right pressure. Now THE PRICE As you were quoting 5&7 times the price is this 5 minutes £0.00 7 minutes £0.00 25 minutes also equals £0.00 No cards no cash not even any tokens. Top up your tyres at Waitrose 👍👍 ( Swaffam location only as I do not know about whether other branches are the same. But still if you are going up to the Norfolk coast pop in )
