The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It's astonishing how much work and craft went into these three-minute symphonies. It's also amazing how the Big Name Artists had no problem turning out three or more albums a year - then going on tour, giving live performances night after night, month after month. It's as if being a recording star was, you know: a job! Today, a popstar needs five years to make an album - and giving six concerts is considered a tour!

AMAZINGLY Petula did not have anytime what so ever to rehearse this for the Ed Sullivan Show. It had taken her forty five minutes from getting off the airplane and getting into a car to take her directly to the studio. She then went on the show and sang "I Know A Place" TOTALLY live as if she had been there all day. With no time for any rehearsals I imagine that is why the band were slightly out of step with Petula's unmatchable vocals. Petula Clark gave a masterclass in how to deliver a BRILLIANT and AWESOME song (Thanks once again to musical genius Tony Hatch) like no other artist could.

Miss Petula Clark was truly a breath of fresh air in her days and times. . you can just tell she was a perfectionist in every way imaginable... she took her singing career seriously ..however, today's singers lip sync their songs on stage cause most of them just look good and are not great singers. but Miss Petula Clark was that "IT" factor! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Her first appearance on "Sullivan", I believe. Supposedly, her flight was delayed, and she arrived only 45 minutes prior to airtime, and so she wasn't able to rehearse, and so one can only imagine how nervous she must have been ,but her performance is top-notch, just the same.

I'm just curious as to why she looks so much older here than in the color version of the song with the dancers that you can also see here on KZfaq, which I assume came later.

@@bilahn1198 - She was tired, jet-lagged and probably had to rush the make-up. Plus the stark lighting for black and white TV ages a lot of entertainers. In the later version, there was more time to prepare, a younger 'mod' hairstyle and far more relaxed overall.

Yes that stiff coiffed hairdo was very typical of older women of the sixties and for 30 years forward, and is very ageing. I don't know who chose that dress for her either, it's very unhip. In the color video which you can find she looked 20 years younger.

Her style changed completely with straight short hair and modern short dresses by 1966 it was such a refreshing difference and her talent as a singer songwriter on most of her B sides too

The first time I heard this was on WEAM AM Radio, Northern Virginia, blasting thru my '61 Falcon's radio. But it wasn't until I saw this performance live , as a 15 year old on this very show, that it really struck me. Lyrics, Melody, Arrangement, Killer Chorus. Powerful vocals right on the money. Truly a song of it's time. Bravo~!

Yes! I lived in Alexandria, VA. in the mid to late 1960’s. Heard it either on WPGC or WEAM. Good times!
