Peugeot 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport. First impressions and living with review.

The "Big News" for Andrew lately is that his Toyota GT86 has gone and in it's place is one of the most hardcore small hot hatches of recent years (production ended at the beginning go 2018, boo), the Peugeot 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport.
This video looks at why Andrew decided to buy this car in place of his rear wheel drive Toyota, how it compares to said car and what his first impressions are of his new daily. He talks about the pros and the cons, the goods and the bad's, and the issues that have surfaced in between. All summed up by asking if this car is a true hot hatch bargain of our time and will it go down in motoring history as one of the all time great hot hatches. Can it live up to it's legendary ancestor the 205 GTI?

More expensive than an ST but worth every penny in my experience. Peugeot sport managed to tune it in such a way that not only is it sharper steering, but also smoother riding! Absolutely love mine. Never fails to put a smile on my face on the roads near where I live! 😊

Thought I recognised the Southerndown bend at 4 mins, that's near me. I've been considering a 208 gti having owned a Cayman for the last 3 years and 996 before that as I need rear seats and, hardly use the Porsche these days. I used to own 205 gtis, so this is of interest. Subbed :)

I'm happy to swap the GTI for the Cayman if you like ;) But in all seriousness the GTi by PS is an incredible little car, I've never driven the 205 GTi but I really think that Peugeot have tried to draw on the philosophy of the older car to make a modern day classic. Thanks also for the sub!

I ran Uniroyal Rainsport 3s on my 207 GTi. Amazing performance in both dry and wet.

Looking to buy on of these, at the moment I’ve got a 2009 Renault Clio 200 and want something abit more nicer inside 👍🏻 only thing putting me off is the reliability off this car but saying that I’ve had my Renault for 5 years and nothing major gone wrong lol

Yeah I guess the reliability thing is a bit of 'luck of the draw'. I know that the front suspension issues are quite common and people have replaced broken springs and dampers within 20k miles. Going on the forums is probably the best bet and possibly going for a newer car with a manufactures warranty or an approved used Peugeot warranty. It's definitely a fun car to consider if you are a fan of the small hot french stuff. Good luck!

What reliability like? Looking at getting one. Im asking as it has the Mini cooper s engine and I hear it gets carbon build up and timing chain.

Are holding price now about 5 on auto trader and those at garages are asking for 11k on a 16 plate with 40k on the clock

I got one in white. Fantastic little car. I got pilot sports on mine and there great in the wet and dry. Only thing is torque steer is a bit twitchy with the small steering wheel.

Just recently put Pilot Sport 4's on the front. The front end grip is phenomenal, especially in the wet. Great tyre, I just hope they last a bit longer than the Pirellis because they aren't a cheap tyre in that size.

Depreciation will slow a lot now they are discontinued. These and the 30th will appreciate in 5-7 years time. Between now and then, they won't lose much more. And also, Loads were flogged at massive discounts in the first place, the invoice of sale would have been sub £18k - mine was ;)

Glad to hear it. Sub £18k is a proper little bargain for one of these. As you can probably tell from the video I'm rather fond of mine.

@@carshizz1185 Got mine with 2.5k miles on it ,18 plate registered in June for £15,2....They had a hard time selling it at 18k with the interesting paint job that I have on mine with the matte black and gloss blue. So apparently there is only about 400 of these 208 GTi's by Peugeot Sport on the roads in the UK....so look after them might be worth something some day as its is a fantastic car to drive.

What’s the reliability on these ? I had a 207 gti and it got a stretched timing belt/chain, it also needed part of the engine rebuilding due to a piston smashing, it spent more time in limp home mode and in the garage during my 9 months of ownership. Have they sorted the reliability out on the Thp engines yet ? If they have then I’d love one of these.

From what I've read, the early 208 GTi was massively more reliable than the 207, but had issues with the high pressure fuel pump and a few other things. Apparently, the reliability improved massively after the 2016 facelift.

It lost nearly 50% of its value in two years. Not sure I'd call it a bargain @ $13K. Hope the downward trend doesn't continue or it'll have been a terrible investment if you plan to sell it in a few years.

I see what you're saying but I'm cautiously optimistic that the car won't lose another 50% over the next two years (here's hoping). I don't really see any car as an investment so I can live with some money going down the pan as long as it keeps putting a smile on my face. Thanks for getting in touch.

@@carshizz1185 Anything you purchase is an investment in an idea. If you're looking for smiles and fun from this car, then you'll be satisfied. And hopefully you get a few years out of it so the loss is minimal. Great vid!
