Peugeot 308 is up there with Volkswagen Golf, as far as modest mid-life cycle refresh measures are concerned. Changes are subtle, but that's not a bad thing, because Peugeot 308 SW, station wagon or estate was a pretty good car from the start. In my opinion 308 SW is actually better (although not prettier), than Peugeot 308 hatchback. What has changed?

I have the 308 SW Active 2018 model. Here my impressions of the car: 1. The 1.2 liter 130 hp engine runs very silent and has a good amount of torque. 2. The 6 speed manual gearbox works nice. 3. The boot is one of the biggest in its class (610/1660 l) and bigger than in the VW Golf or even in a BMW 5 series touring. 4. The small steering wheel and the Peugeot i cockpit works perfect. I did already appreciate it very much in my Peugeot 208. The Peugeot sat nav works flawless in Germany. The graphics and the color combinations of the touchscreen look very high class. 5. Handling the automatic two zone climate control via touchscreen is very easy. I just set the temperature for driver and codriver, put the system in auto mode and that's it. The car does the rest for me. 6. I ordered the safety package which also includes a special screen between the speedometer and the rev counter. There I can see the digital speed. If I want the car will show me consumption figures there. And, very important, the sat nav sends me information there about where and when to turn. This way I have my digital speedo active all the time which I like very much. Interrupted for short moments when the sat nav shows and tells me to turn right or left. 7. The suspension of the car is comfortable but not soft. 8. The car feels much smaller than it really is while driving. 9. The interior styling and quality is very high class. Very reduced, very few buttons. 10. The illumination of all the buttons has the right color: white. Calm, worthy and not distracting. 11. All in all the car feels very nice. After Peugeot 208 diesel, a very good and smooth diesel engine, I nevertheless enjoy the silence of the petrol engine. And the huge panoramic sunroof. 12. The seats are very comfortable and give a decent amount of side support. 13. My average consumption is between 5.5 and 5.8 l/100 km. A little bit more than with my 208 (4,2 l/100 km). But I have a much roomier and a little bit stronger car . Which already has a petrol particel filter and Euro 6d. I didn't go for the diesel version anymore because I only drive about 15.000 to 17.000 km a year. Most of the time short distances and almost no Autobahn. So the petrol engine is the better choice for me.

I love my 2016 308 SW as well! Super pleased with it so far. Excellent highway cruiser, love the panorama sunroof, big trunk, quiet inside, etc. Not to mention that the car is extremely fuel efficient! 4.6l in the summer and 5.6l/100km in the winter, not bad!

my average is 4.8l (overall) with 2.0 BlueHDI 150. if I would drive with "recommended" speed it would be like 4.5l :D im sure if I had the new 1.5L engine as a hatchback without the sunroof I would even get something like 4 litres :)

I have a '15 308 SW, average is around 6-7 liters for 100km (1.2 puretech 130hp). I love it but I would like to find some way to update / upgrade the infotainment system with the facelift one. It's a shame our doesn't support apple car play / android auto

Nice review, Marek. As an owner of the 2016 model of this car, I feel it would have been nice to mention that this new version supports Apple Carplay and Android via MirrorLink, which I think is a decent upgrade for some. Shame you didn't get a test car with the panoramic sunroof! The experience certainly is nicer in my opinion with one. Keep up the good work!

Hi Marek, I really enjoy watching your reviews as I like how you judge cars from a totally unbiased point of view. I’m in Ireland and always watch your reviews before I watch the UK ones! Keep up the good work. I do have a question for you to answer for me though. Which engine would you pick if it was between VAG 1.6 TDI 115, PSA 1.6 BlueHDI 120 or the Renault 1.5 dCi 110 engine? I always found the BlueHDI 120 to be a superb engine, lovely spread torque yet very refined and economical. Would like to hear your thoughts! Thanks :-)

I am curious about the following. Most of the cars you review are offered in 2 or 3 or 4 different diesel engine variants and another 2 or more petrol variants. In the United States, car models are offered with, at most, 2 different engine options (except for trucks which have 1000 variants). Why is this? Are there so many specialized markets or regulations in Europe that this is necessary? It seems SOOO expensive to offer so many engines in other basic, low-end cars. Do customers really need to choose between 100hp, 110hp and 130hp diesels? Wouldn't one fit the bill for most everyone? I can understand offering 1 diesel and 1 petrol, but every model you review offer 3, 4 or 5 different motors. Maybe I am just not understanding either the localization regulations or the consumers in Europe. Please explain.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 6 жыл бұрын
Pricing and company fleets. It is often the case that least powerful engine is available only on the lowest trim, which makes a good XX999 price to put in the advert. As trims progress and more powerful engine variants are introduced it's easier to conceal the extra price. You may ask "How much for sat nav?!?" And the dealer will tell you that it's not just sat nav, but also extra 10 hp :) That's for individual clients. However in Europe company sales are just as (or even more important), and this is where different power outputs (and associated emission levels) come into play. If a company wants to be perceived as "green" it will buy a low-emission fleet, so the less power and lower displacement the better. But corporations wouldn't be corporations if they didn't have some policy allowing its more senior staff to drive more powerful (less green) cars. So you look at the carpark and all you can see are grey station wagons. But a few of them have more hp and better trim, and people who know, KNOW :) In the end this is pretty much the same 1.6 HDi engine with different programme. I doubt they are using different drivetrain parts for different power outputs, so you could probably chip tune it for a couple of hundred euro. Of course, that voids the warranty, etc., but some people do it. If we wanted to go into more detail, I guess there are also different use scenarios. Some cars are used mostly on the highway, others are driven mostly in the city. I think European cities are (in general, we're not talking about LA) more congested, and less spread out than American cities, so more engine choices make more sense. At least that's the theory.

I did buy this over the outdated focus. its far superior. the focus interior is simply awful and so far behind now. yes the focus might have bit better handling but thats where it ends. Marek is knit picking here, hes trying very hard to find faults with the 308. The dash display and bonnet opening mechanism?? simply ridiculous petty things to be pointing out when they aren't even issues at all.

Carplay was available earlier than Android Auto. Either the infotainment has been upgraded since 2017 (these days it's common to see certain features appear and disappear depending on which WEEK of the year the vehicle was manufactured) or it's an aftermarket solution. I'd love to know, which one was it.

VW dominates. Ford is considered American here, either built in Canada or the States. Fiat is sold here but they basically sell variants of the 500 only. Mini is sold in special Mini dealers next to BMW. No Skoda, no Seat, no Peugeot, no Renault, no Lada (darn!!!). As for Opel/Vauxhall, they used to bring a couple cars badged as Buicks here but now they have been bought out by Peugeot from GM so I'm not sure what's going on with that relationship. Maybe you could investigate this. Maybe GM is planning on coming back to Europe as GM? Also, none of the Chinese brands you might see in Europe, are sold over here yet. I would say the affordable car is dominated by the Japanese and American OEMs over here. Americans are very nationalistic so learning toward American brands and Canadians love Toyota and Honda and Surprisingly Subaru has a rabid following.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 6 жыл бұрын
I know Ford has a factory in Canada :) kzfaq.info/sun/PLWPj1I-kKwU5oG1p93j3yf6pu6dtpmR3y As far as GM in Europe is concerned, they mainly sold Chevrolet models made in cooperation with Daewoo and Opel (Spark, Sonic, Cruze, Trax, and a couple of others that I think got axed). They were pretty cheap, so they undercut Opel sales, hence GM decision to withdraw Chevrolet from Europe. Cadillac didn't seel, Corvette is a niche model, so basically GM has 3-4 models, which have potential in Eastern Europe, where people buy cheap cars, and may prefer sedans to hatchbacks (though Cruze was available here as a HB too). Not really a business case.
@kevinn1158
@kevinn1158 6 жыл бұрын
Chevy was seen as the cheapest option for the longest time but then Kia and Hyundai came along and matched their price and gave people cars that were attractive so GM seems to be supported by Americans who only want to buy American. Ha I forgot, about that video you made!

Great review, looks like Peugeot are resting on their laurels a tad. I know it was a good car from the get go but if they overstretch themselves in their business acquisitions they may become fat and bloated on French government subsidies and end up squandering their innovative achievements over the past few recent years down the "British Leyland" drain. Their design language latterly has been good, but improvement is a continuous cycle. Thanks again for the excellent review, pity Peugeot couldn't see there way to providing you with a high spec car to showcase their wares, or perhaps they think they are now too upmarket for such bread and butter sales pitching.
@MarekDrives

It's a tough call with press cars. Some viewers want to see cars they'd actually buy, others want to see top trim to see what they're missing. I agree it's better to showcase all the features, but this is a fleet car in the end.
