What I reckon this game is trying to do is re-create that feeling you had where as a kid you couldn’t complete any game. I remember playing Super Mario 3 back in the day and it was super hard for me! I think this game is trying to make you have those feelings again but as an adult.

There were reasons for that though. Game cartridges couldn't fit much content so they had to stretch it out by making you replay levels. Also it was kind of a tradition/hold over from arcades, where dying means you spend more money. So we're past those limitations now, but sure I don't think revisiting them like Cuphead does is necessarily a bad thing.

I feel like perhaps the main thing that made Super Mario 3 hard was the lack of ability to save progress. I was a kid, and my parents wouldn't let me keep the NES on for enough hours to beat the game in one sitting. Maybe Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country were easier, I dunno -- but they also had a save feature so that you didn't have to do it all in one sitting.

No.. The simple mechanics are.. If you haven't played a certain game in quite a while.. ie, played shooters rather than platformers, for example, a different set of gaming is needed and has "dulled" over time as they haven't been utilized over time

But I beat all the Mario games for nes, every Megaman minus the first one because I didn't have access to it as a kid, I beat Metroid, both Turtles games, and even Contra (though I ended up using the Konami code for extra lives so it only half counts to me). I pretty much beat every game I played back then that didn't loop forever or have an impassible bug on a level. It's now that I suck at games. Frickin' arthritis, repetitive stress injuries, and carpal tunnel will do that to ya though. My biggest childhood regret is going to the bathroom and then going outside for a bit during a flawless Sonic 2 run at the part where you fight mecha Robotnik only to come back to find my cousin having lost all my lives and continues getting a game over screen. He looked at me and in a dickish tone said "Who cares?" "It's just a stupid game." What followed was a blur but according to eyewitness accounts I actually choked him halfway unconscious while screaming "Well life is a game too, and you're about to see the Game Over screen!!!" and two adults had to pry my hands off his throat while I kicked them. Good times.

Hilda Berg is possibly my favorite boss in the game. Using constellations to battle her enemy, summoning tornadoes out of thin air, her lethal "HA"s, and turning into a scary yet wicked looking clockwork moon. Friggen awesome!

Honestly, I recently beat the game on switch. At first, through maybe the second isle, i was in the "this game is honestly way too hard camp." I felt like it was unfair difficulty (I.E: the enemies predict where you're going, certain cases of 0% chance to dodge, etc) While there are some cases where you can't dodge (stuck in a corner) when i got better i did realize that there were patterns to look for that helped me tremendously. Game is hard. But now that i got better, it's fair. Loved it.

In run & gun part 1, you should never stop running, you'll see that the continuous flow of the enemy goes with cuphead running, That stage is worse with 2 players, play it alone

I was debating whether or not to get cup head. People told me not to, they said it was hard and rage-inducing. It looked too fun, so I got it recently. It’s hard, but not as hard as I had expected. I’m on isle 2 within 2 hours of gameplay. Not that good I know, I have 2 more bosses to do before I get to isle 3, but I love the game so far, haven’t even raged at it (yet)

I absolutely love the way cuphead works with its bosses. There IS an easy mode but completing that and not the normal mode will complete the boss, but not give you the soul contract (all of them are needed to access the final world). There is also an expert mode after you complete the game for people who want even more of as challenge.

I think part of the reason this game is so difficult for some is because of how much there is to watch out for in the boss fights, it can make it pretty hard for someone who gets distracted easily (me).
