I beat this masterpiece back in 94 , just after it came out a year or two prior.and honestly, it changed me, I was blown away by all the different types of characters you could end up playing as, dependent upon whom you chose for your previous character to marry.whew, what a sentence.lol.anyway it's second only (in my book) to PS 4 which , when developed, was a big big money production, whereas PS 3 , well it was made by a different team than 1+2 so with a tonne going on at Sega at that time, it was medium to low priority and didn't have a lot of cash, or expectations behind it. Anyway I could go on all day, great episode dude, thanks for the memories

Where did you get the idea that this game does away with an experience-based progression system? The very battle screen that you show while you're talking about it shows the characters getting XP after a battle... But that's not my only evidence; I've played this game back then, and was obsessed with it for a while. In fact, it was my very first RPG, which helps explain the obsession. And the progression system is totally XP-based. Maybe you're thinking about the techniques system, where you have groups of techniques and can distribute "points" among them to strengthen some while weakening others?

Yes I misspoke on that.

I mean the still graphics of enemies during combat show it's age. And you're telling me it had no lvling system? At THIS point, We're practically turning this game into an audio book! Other then that, I agree that PS3 is praiseworthy for drawing attention to what could be done with a story's narrative considering the generational mechanic. Not sure if I want to play THIS one before or AFTER I play 2 and 4???

This one gets such a bad rap. It’s honestly pretty good though isn’t it?

It's a great story and should definitely be played at least once if you're a fan, but it is the worst of the series. The enemy animations are weird, and the battle mechanics are bizarre. The multiple endings means you will be replaying the same thing over and over again. Again, it's ok the first time around, but IMHO, it has no replay value. Unlike the other phantasy star games, which I've replayed hundreds of times.
