Despite the difficulty, this game is a gem. I love the atmosphere and story. All aspects are really well made: graphics, sound and gameplay.

Best RPG for the SNES is without a doubt Might and Magic 2: Gates to Another World.. also nice for being one of the few Western RPGs on that system, most of the others being JRPGs.

I ike this but I never understood why ranged basic weapons were eliminated and why each character was restricted to one weapon type. IMO yhey should have included a mix of ranged and melee basic weapons. Either start each character with a ranged type and a melee type, add new weapon types with class changes, or both.

Where did you get the idea that this game does away with an experience-based progression system? The very battle screen that you show while you're talking about it shows the characters getting XP after a battle... But that's not my only evidence; I've played this game back then, and was obsessed with it for a while. In fact, it was my very first RPG, which helps explain the obsession. And the progression system is totally XP-based. Maybe you're thinking about the techniques system, where you have groups of techniques and can distribute "points" among them to strengthen some while weakening others?

IMO Phantasy Star II and III could have been so much better. Luckily PS IV delivered. PS II however delivered big time with its music, which was inspired and memorable.

Some additional things to note and detail: (1) Shadowrun is an early open-world game, something that wasn't very common for RPGs of the day. The plot can be unraveled by following many different paths whenever you want to follow them. (2) The character customization is very impressive for such an early game. You can decide what type of character you want to play as (samurai, spell caster, or decker), and you can invest you skill points as you see fit. (3) Unlike the SNES version, this game has extended playtime value, as you can always take new missions. Its like having a random quest generator built into it.

Good introduction to the game, but I would have liked to hear about some of the games flaws too. Talk about what makes it good, but also what could have made it better.

Shadowrun on Genesis (and the SNES for that matter) has aged really well. Phantasy Star 4 too. Some old RPGs are hard to pick back up again, but those games are still relaxing.

Phantasy Star was too damn grindy, and I grinded out priest/monk healing in Shining Force 1-2. Even if you grinded in the latter and gave a single character every stat increasing item you still couldn't beat the bosses alone.

I played this game on the PlayStation. It was a bit rough as the frame rate would drop pretty hard when you had a lot of units and buildings. But still this was a really fun game. My first try at a RTS. Not one of my favorite genres. But this was fun and holds dear to my heart 🙂

I hear a lot of people pronouncing Zebes the way you do, like "Zeebs" but based on the typo in the first Metroid's opening text calling it "Zebeth" I think we can conclude that the correct pronunciation is "Zeb-es"

@Collidedatoms

Yeah, the pronunciation was really distracting. I have a pet peeve about pronunciation. Zeebz sounds better than the others IMO but.... nine-TEN-do was like getting shocked playing Operation with Parkenson's. Norfair should rhyme with warfare and has the same emphasis, Brinstar should be BRIHN-star, etc.

My favorite main series game in one of my favorite franchises. And Blair didn't fight the Borders Worlds before. The Border Worlds were allied with the Confederation during the Kilrathi War but never actually signed the Articles of Confederation to become members. That's one of the arguments the pro war faction uses. That because the Border Worlds were so tied to the Confederation during the Kilrathi War they became member worlds even if they didn't sign the paperwork or ask to join. I love the Bearcat class Heavy Fighters from this. They're my third favorite fighter in the franchise after the Raptor class Heavy Fighters from the first game and the Banshee class Heavy Fighter from the Armada spinoff game (A completely different craft from this game's Border Worlds Banshee class Light Fighters)

The peace of Daventry is shattered in an instant; Cedric starts talking. In all seriousness, it's a true classic. Personally, I prefer KQ6. Especially when introducing a new gamer to classic adventure games. Yet, KQ5 will always have special place in my heart (yes, even you Cedric. You may sound like you're perpetually kicked in your owl berries, but you have a heart of gold).

Thats 10 RPG's from the golden age available along with dozens of other games of all types! I had both systems growing up, but all RPGs that i played growing up except Buck Rodgers countdown to doomsday and pirates gold mostly, i played most of my games on the snes.
