For anyone who can't get their waveform to loop seamlessly: I found that I had to render/freeze the MIDI to 48K 32-bit audio for it to loop without clicks. Any other configuration would lead to audible clicks as well as imperfect behaviour as a modulator in Serum. Once the audio had been rendered, it still looped perfectly once converted to 44.1K 16-bit. For some reason though, freezing the Serum MIDI with those settings never yielded the same result. I'm using REAPER but I'm guessing this might also occur in other DAWS - perhaps even Ableton. Hope this helps. Also - get Au5's sound design course ya shmucks

I actually imported a lot of single cycle shapes in the noises just for FM, especially if I wanted double FM and the sub shapes weren't exactly what I wanted to use, but I never thought I could use it to modulate it directly, sometimes it creates FM but not necessarily, that's a really cool technique

Dude, just came across this video of yours from years ago, and just realized that what you said at the end of the video may just be what you've shared on your Instagram the other day? 🤔 Nevertheless, awesome video, and thanks for sharing these weird intricate tips and things, because I've come to realize that music production is more than just notes and sounds, but also the weird and whacky things you discover along the way, and just straight up out of the box usage for various different things. And that's one thing I know you do a lot, and I appreciate that 😌

I used the Adventure Kid Waveforms, they are single cycle already so lots of fun too be had with all of those as the noise Osc. Plus the VST 3 format will let us use external audio as a source.Once Live 10.1 is released(can use VST3's) and Serum becomes a VST 3 synth/fx.(if its not already..Steve?)Cheers Mr S

I've tried that a long time ago, but kept encountering a problem. When I routed a modulator into the audio input it would take the plugin at least 1 full minute to produce an effect. How successful was the FM8 method for you?

Idk about Ableton, but in Reaper you can modulate any VST parameter by essentially sidechaining it to another audio track. If you set the attack and decay of that sidechain to zero, you can get a similar effect to here, but with live audio.

Epic tutorial! I have a feeling if you turn on the x4 quality setting you will hear much more resolution in the sound, particularly in the high end. For FM sounds it does anyway, and it makes a really big difference. Interesting what you did with the external instr device. Are you sending midi information AFTER the operator, or is the midi info and the audio from operator coming side by side? I guess it's whatever way serum listens to it's inputs?? Nice lil head spinner anyway lmao
