You're a braver and more sensible man than me. I have thousands and thousands of records that I know I'll never even listen to once in my lifetime, but they are all members of my family. Recently, I have managed to purge a few hundred that weren't in good enough shape. I feel that is about as much personal growth as I can handle at the moment.

I did a huge purge last year. About 500 records. It was a good move. That is the BEST Rikki ever! I definitely get the purge mentality. NO Not Who's next! Baba O'reilly! I go back to it again & again!

A good honest assessment of where you are at with your collection. One more move, and plenty of good places to relocate to ! Looks like a healthy purge, and you can trade for some good fresh sounds that you will be into..

I purged Billy Idol and Cheap Trick at Budokan a long time ago, but I don't think I could ever purge Who's Next, I have a nice British press on Track that sounds great. I'd keep the 10 Years After too. I know someday I'll have to sell off my collection, but for right now, I just want to enjoy it! Hope you have a great Memorial Day Rich.

I had as many records as you once Richie. All killer punk. I was moving them around military bases every few years and it was such a pain. I purged them all. Now l'm settled l regret it so much, especially the prices they reach. I'll never be able to replace them. Good luck with the purge.

Ive been purging on and off since last year...and do get some cool bonus freebies from the bargain bins when I do my tradeins...Out of what I saw..you bet that Turtle Soup is very cool...found a copy last year and probably in my Top 40 of fave records..other that that the 10 Years after stuff..which never seen those you showed and that Neil bootleg look interesting.Very cool video and cool stuff.Thanx for sharing and take care

I’ve been doing the same. Maybe I’ll do a follow up to your video. By the way Mimi Farina was Joan Baez’s sister. Richard wrote a book “Been Down So Long Looks Like It’s Up To Me”. The night of the party for the book being published, 1966, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. They only put out 2 albums. I have both and though I don’t listen to them often, I want to keep them both. And the purge goes on.

I hear ya on the classic rock. When I started buying records again I was buying some classic rock that I didn’t have on vinyl but most of them I haven’t listened to. I am absolutely horrible about getting rid of records. I mean I’ve been a collector by nature since I was a kid. Not just records but everything including comics and weird Knick knacks and shite like that. I just have trouble letting sh!t go but then I realized I could no longer afford the real cool records that I wanted especially psych & garage stuff and everything 60’s. So you’ll be proud to know that I have pulled about 30 albums that I’m taking to the RS this weekend to “purge” Really I’ll be trading them for store credit but guess what? I’m gonna get more records but not as many as I’m leaving them. There are a few records you shared here that I’d probably let go too In fact you’ve made a case for me to unload my Ten Years After stuff Might keep the one with Change the World on it. I have done some smaller purges but I feel a big one is coming at some point. Been meaning to give a quick listen to my Hot Tuna records and figure out if they are worth keeping, I probably listened to them once years ago and filed them away in the shelves. My buying now is limited to mainly filling gaps in my collection, which would probably make a vinyl finds type video incredibly boring for most but I'm not exploring a wide variety of genres anymore, just focusing on what matters the most to me. Coming from a guy who now has 100000 to dig through I’d definitely say I’m in the Purging face of my 25+ years of collecting. 33 cubes of records would be a pain in the ass to haul from one coast to another. That's a lot of records - I'm at 12 cubes and that seems like too much, but I'm not retired. I always figure you calculate how many records you listen to in a day, multiply that by 365 days, and that's the right amount to have. 12 is too much for me now, but when I retire, I'll probably want more because I'll have more time to listen. After spending my first 18 years of life in the Bronx and Long Island, I spent my first year of college in Farmville, VA. Beautiful state. The first thing that struck me though was "oh, THIS is what fresh air smells like!" Cheers, Tom

I'm starting to purge records too. Like you, I started buying records at a young age, having a wide variety, etc. I live in North Carolina, our property taxes are going up also. We have alot of California transplants here along with the northen states. Good video, sir.

Binge and purge, so is the life of a record collector. I do a purge once or twice a year for my ears and for my back.

I purge music occasionally. Recently kept that Rickie Lee album cause I like "Last Chance Texaco" and a few others. Still, you gotta let go of stuff to make the most of what you keep. Looking like I'll probably have to leave California too, but I'll miss it...lived other places and there's nothing like it. But wherever I go, you can bet I'll be listening to music...loud!

I've always purged my collections, sometimes with regret but usually not. I got 200 movies to get rid of at the moment. Took a few Cd's to the Thrift Shop yesterday. Forgot to mention, I do like that Hot Tuna album but it is fairly moody for them.

Hey man. I've been meaning to purge some of my classic rock collection over the past 5 years. I did purge about 150 lps before leaving Las Vegas, which were mostly classic rock doubles, like Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Beach Boys and the like, albums that are easy to sell. I'm with you, most classic rock staples were ruined by over play on the radio. I mean, how many times can you listen to Stairway To Heaven or basically a majority of Zeppelin, The Who, CCR, Bad Co., etc. I'd much rather own lps I'm going to listen to instead of having hundreds of classic rock records collecting dust. When I traded in the 150 in Vegas, I obtained original presses of Dragonfly, Joseph The Stoned Age Man and T2. I can't remember the last time I spun a Stones record. Anyway, I rambled on. Peace.

I have around 1500 records and I know I am not going to listen to them all, but I have a mental issue with unloading them. It is very strange. About 30 years ago I purged some of my CDs and about 3 or so years after I did that I was wanting to listen to them and there was no way to do it. I was super bummed about it. I think that is what created my mental block to purging my records. That said, I have really slowed down on buying tons of records and I've tried to be more intentional about what I buy.

I've been debating on if I want to purge stuff that I like, but I would rather listen to it in my car. That means I'm getting rid of most all my punk stuff, which is 85% of my collection.

Working on purging some stuff right now too. A bunch of budget bin jazz I'll never listen to and classic rock mostly. I'm running out of room in the record dungeon. Maybe I'll ride your coattails and do a video on it.

Great vid and it seems a lot of people are purging. I have been donating albums on a weekly basis to the charity shops. They are the ones for me that just aren't worth selling and it's just too much work listing records online to sell too.

A man on a mission. Except for those Ten Years After LPs, I don't own anything you showed. Although, I have had a few of those before. Trade in purging is the way to go for lesser albums cuz selling them online is not an easy thing to do, and the money part of it is not very good after all is said and done. Good luck on your purging quest.

I gotta purge my collection too but I got a problem. I want value for my records and not penny's on the dollar like those flippers that always show when you want to sell something... Smart move getting out of California Pat. It's gonna go down faster than most states and as you say it's already started.... The Great Lakes region or New England is what I would be looking at for the move if I was staying in the States. Get away from those floods, fires, draughts and earthquakes. When you move stay away from tornado country because they're gonna be more frequent and bigger. In your old age you don't want any natural catastrophes in your future to deal with.... New Zealand or Tasmania would be my choice.

I'm always purging. Done it since the 70s. It's gotten more difficult as time has gone by cuz all the easy to get rid of albums are long gone. Now I have to purge good stuff. I still have Who's Next but haven't played it in 20+ years. Maybe its time has come. PS In my corner of CA the property taxes don't go up since nobody wants to live in a place where you gotta drive 2 hours to go to a McDonalds.

It's never easy for me to trade in used records at the record store, but I have started trading in a few in the past few months. Mostly due to space limitations. I used to hear people in the VC complain about not having enough space to store all the records and thought I would never get there, but I have. But now I have to decide, do I really want to bother with taking 20 old Foghat and Aerosmith and REO Speedwagon records to the the record store? Will they give me anything for them? lol It would probably turn into a 20 for 1 trade....

That's the problem with obscure punk records. They're 'valuable' but only to a few, making them difficult to offload. In some ways, it would be better if they were worthless, that way, they'd be easier to purge.

I was about to say, Turtle Soup should be a keeper, but I do love Battle of the Bands. I agree on those two Hot Tuna albums you are keeping - the rest you don't need. What's your favorite Steppenwolf record? To this day, I absolutely love this band. So pretentious to try and please your friends with their tastes. I always hated that sentiment. The new Tears For Fears is their masterpiece. I was shocked when I heard that. That's a rarity with most bands. Come to St. Lou. I'll party with ya. Most people leave for greener grass but the property and gas taxes haven't changed much. We kick it old school though. "Rebel Yell" is a banger. "Rain On The Scarecrow" is still my favorite Cougar song. Getting rid of "Who's Next?" is blasphemy. I will agree with your detractors on that one. Check out my Haley & The Crushers videos if you want to hear the modern Go-Go's. (Or Josie Cotton for that matter). You're such a California Man! It would be weird to hear you hailing somewhere else. I think it's perfectly acceptable to purge, even more the stuff people think you should keep and sacrilege to get rid of, it's refreshing and what makes us individuals. I came to a point a while ago where a CD will do for me if vinyl is way too expensive. Other stuff I keep partly nostalgia reasons or just getting round to listening to again one day. Actually selling at fairs is fun, sociable but there's that buying more problem at them particularly if it's to resell again. Ah the loops and excuses of collectors. A big can of worms. Interesting and don't want scripted videos all the time from these big shitters sorry hitters.
