Anudari Batjargal our phases aren't caused by the earth's shadow, but 7 translucent disks that also cause our solar eclipses. The ancient cultures and Asian religion call it rahu or black sun.

Could you make the same video but for the southern hemisphere? This is such a good explanation but not the right visual for our hemisphere so I can' use it with my class.

Yes, you can use it in your class. The moon's phases are created the same way. The moon's position and orientation is just different depending where you're located. YOu don't hear people on the equator complaining, nor those in northern Sweden.

A trick to know what phase the Moon is in at any given moment is to note the shape of the letters in the word DOC. D - 1st quarter, O - full and C - 3rd quarter

1:09 this is possible during nighttime, but if its a 100% new moon the sunlight makes it invisible, however if you live in the poles during winter or simply if the moon is MOSTLY filled (meaning it can appear at night) then this is true.

One can also say that the phases are caused by us seeing more or less of the Moon's sunlit side as it orbits the Earth.

Planets and other moons and asteroids also have a phase cycle too like Jupiter has a phase cycle if you want to one of Jupiter’s moons you will see Jupiter but as the moon orbits Jupiter you will see the phase cycle of Jupiter like: new Jupiter, waxing crescent Jupiter, first quarter Jupiter, waxing gibbous Jupiter, full Jupiter waning gibbous Jupiter last quarter Jupiter waning crescent Jupiter and then new Jupiter.

since the earth rotation is tilted by 23.5 degrees and the moon's is tilted by 5 degrees, cant we slightly see some part of the dark side of the moon as the phases go on? i feel dumb asking this so im really sorry for my idiocy and bad english

Definitely not a dumb question! In fact a very intelligent intuitive question. Yes, we do see a small portion of the "Dark Side" of the Moon throughout its normal phases, we call this libration. And there are three types of libration. It permits an observer to see slightly different portions of the surface at different times. It is similar in both cause and effect to the changes in the Moon's apparent size due to changes in distance. It is caused by three mechanisms two of which are causing a relatively tiny physical libration via tidal forces exerted by the Earth. Such true librations are known as well for other moons with tidal lock rotation. Libration in longitude: results from the eccentricity of the moon's orbit around Earth; the Moon's rotation sometimes leads and sometimes lags its orbital position. The lunar libration in longitude can reach +/_ 7°54′ in amplitude. Libration in latitude: results from a slight inclination (about 6.7°) between the Moon's axis of rotation and the normal, to the plane of its orbit around Earth. (Its origin is analogous to how the seasons arise from Earth's revolution about the Sun). It can reach +/_ 6°50′ in amplitude. Diurnal libration: is a small daily oscillation due to Earth's rotation, which carries an observer first to one side and then to the other side of the straight line joining Earth's and the Moon's centers, allowing the observer to look first around one side of the Moon and then around the other-since the observer is on Earth's surface, not at its center. It reaches less than 1° in amplitude.

The effects described by Michael Walsh allows us to see up to 59 % of the Moon's surface in total, but never more than 50 % at any given time - and less than that when the Moon isn't full.

@@ok-zf1sd If at all possible, never refer to the far side of the moon as the dark side. The side of the moon that never faces earth, does in fact receive just as much sunlight as the near side, so calling it the 'dark side' is rather non-sensical.

All the planets follow with the sun as seen by us looking UP, often seen in day. Also in the air you can SEE the sun below in the clouds,on one side and the full moon on the other. strange huh.

Great video that explains the phases of the Moon. But how is it about the tilt of the Moon? I know that sometimes the north/south axes of the Moon is tilted towards right and at other times it is tilted towards left. It would be great if you could make a video that explained that.

As a kid I though the shadow on the moon was from the earth, made some sense when it was Crescent moon since it looked like a round object was making a shadow, then I though maybe since the moon is round that is what made the shadow look that way, made more sense in the other phases of the moon 😅
