- They’re spelling “BABYMETAL” - This song was normally used to open their concerts as the “death” part is a pun on the word “desu” (silent u) which is how you introduce yourself in Japanese. - This was a special occasion for Su-Metal’s 16th birthday, where she gives up her mortal life to ascend and become a metal goddess... as one does on their 16th birthday obviously - This is one of the four times Su-Metal has been crucified.

ok some info for this show. it was for Su's 16th birthday. the show started with a dubstep version of headbanger then finished with this song. the opening was Su being like a Jpop idol and then at the end this song with her being crucified was so she could die and come back as a metal goddess which she is. also at the start they had the fake band and then last five songs was with the kami band and they have been with them ever since. quite a few videos came from this show. the statue that looked like Virgin Mary had Su's face on it. you have to look close to see it. yes you have to see them live to truly appreciate them and what the production is like. some of the stage designs and all going into them are millions of dollars and they use it so well. it is a show not just a performance.

I'm not a gig goer, but these guys look like they would be a lot of fun to go see.

Hearing the presentation the first thing they say "Su-metal Desu, Yui-metal desu, Moa-metal desu" so surreal

OK before we start #notacult OK, now that's established there is a translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit with understanding what was happening. "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourselves as "djentlee desu" (I am djentlee). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by a self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday (as you correctly thought) ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times, the last was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames. There were a couple of tributes to Metallica (the opening drum riff is from Metallica's 'One' and the statue breaking at the end was what they did with a statue in their 'Justice For All' tour in 1989). The neck brace is also a tribute to Yoshiki, the drummer with X Japan who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear one a lot of the time - BABYMETAL use the neck brace a lot. It sounds like they are saying "death" but they are saying "desu" which means " I am". So Su, Moa and Yui are introducing themselves and Babymetal. The death/desu juxtaposition and confusion is also like the death/crucifixion juxtaposition and confusion. Both desu and the crucifixion are about affirmation rather than negation and Su is reborn as a Metal Godess. So the whole song is a big pun and is about the opposite of death...#notacult.

Without the crucifixion though. : ) I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn & Stone Sour in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's Birthday on June 20th. There were Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. : )

The statue and it crumbling at the end is a tribute to Metallica's "...And Justice For All" while the neck brace is a tribute to the drummer for the Japanese metal band, X Japan, who broke/injured his neck from headbanging too much!

This was one of their highlights for every concert..much like Rammstein with their own pyro shows. Babymetal usually open or end their shows with Babymetal Death. Unfortunately, they dont perform this song anymore since one of the girls left..the last time Su was crucified was back in late 2017. Unless they have a permanent member replacing Yui, I doubt the whole Babymetal production will bring back Babymetal Death. But, still, at least you can enjoy their other songs live. If you want to the same level of craziness with theatrical acts and ridiculously heavy riffs, better check out Babymetal - In The Name Of Especially the Legend S concert.

Yes we had warned you that BABYMETAL is first and foremost a LIVE act. Albums and MV's are mere appetizers. You wouldn't believe the amount of songs I started to love just by watching or hearing them play it live. They transcend their songs and make a spectacle out of every song and the whole package only starts to make sense during their live performances. Listening to BABYMETAL only through their studio album songs do NOT do them justice. Su's voice is 10x better live, the Kami band are world reckowned top notch musicians and their production always kicks ass. It's a whole nother level when live and you've finally caught a glimpse of why we said that and how we didn't lie. And remember, this is still only 2013... They've got way more to come for you to be flabbergasted ;).
