I'm 67 years old and even though I love all types of music from all eras, the music of the 70s and 80s is the music that entwines my heart and soul. The best years of my life. Most of the family and friends from those years have passed, whether from illness or age, but when I hear the songs, I'm back with them; healthy and laughing and loving life. I enjoy seeing you and others of your generation - and those even younger - experiencing and appreciating the talent that came before you. Thank you for your videos.

@DaveLeach6973 жыл бұрын
January 1981 Phil wrote, produced and performed this single in a very subdued UK environment with 'some' attention but not at the the level it's risen to today. The concert we're watching here was at the Palais Omnisports Paris Bercy, in June 2004. At the beginning he recalls a meeting with someone for whom he obviously has no respect (Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand. I've seen your face before, my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am. I was there and I saw what you did...saw it with my own two eyes (In his mirror). So you can wipe off that grin...I know where you been. It's all been a pack of lies.) He's referring, of course, to himself and not to some imaginary other. His lowest point in life (drowning) through his answered prayers for success (I can feel it comin' in the air tonight, oh Lord) to his eventual stardom (I've been waiting for this moment all my life) brought him here to share with you and me the one thing that we're all afraid of...failure vs success. The melody is haunting, the atmosphere follows suit, the lyrics touch all of our hearts and the climax is...well, you tell me!

During the "Dance Into the Light" tour in 97, that almost happened. His drum tech is a friend of mine and told me that, at one show, the hydraulic lift for his "In the Air Tonight" kit didn't work...he had to literally jump DOWN to where his kit was in order to make his entrance on the fill...because of all of the drum and cymbal stands (as well as his stool and the pedals), this could've easily ended with an injury...but he stuck the landing, played, and sold the t-shirt ;) Legend.

Duuuuuuude, that's what I'm SAYING. What the song was built from is important, but what makes it so significant is what it means to each person, because at the root of it is a sense of empowerment... the strength that we each have within ourselves to know what is RIGHT, and to follow it no matter how other people do wrong or try to tear us down. Like you KNOW you have your own worth, and the actions of others, at the end of the day, will see a reckoning one way or another, and it's so satisfying and rare to embody that in a song. What a stellar performer. Seriously.
