He didn‘t just get on a plane, he got on the Concorde and was in NY within 3 hours. Today (almost 40 years later), this is no longer possible! (Actually it‘s been no longer possible for the last 20 years!) This makes the whole thing even more epic / historic, because it couldn‘t be done today!

I'm a 70 year old head banger, and I was one of the 72,000 at Wembley Live Aid concert 1985. I was about 6 rows back from the stage, and Phil's vocals were epic as usual. Back in the 60's 70's,and 80's I saw many live bands and performers, including Phil with Genesis, Led Zep(7 times), Deep Purple, Jethro Tull etc., but live aid was something else entirely. What an amazing concert this was, I feel so privileged to have witnessed so many great performances, especially in my opinion, the greatest live performance ever, Freddie and Queen.Whenever I watch the Queen vid, I can see the 32 year old 'me', arms raised ,clapping along to Fred singing Radio Ga Ga. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.

I worked Live Aid in Philly. I was 20 and it was truly unforgettable. I was a rookie crew member, so all I did was run audio and light cables for days, but I got to watch one of the most iconic concerts in history, from the vantage point of a road case off stage, seated next to Madonna and Sean Penn (whom I had already known from being on the set of Taps, when it was filmed at the Valley Forge Military Academy a few years prior). It was an honor and privilege to be part of something so grand, and witness all that legendary talent in one place.

I was blessed to grow up in the time where we got to see these shows broadcast live on TV. One of the few times my parents let me stay up late because music was such a huge part of our home. I was 9 when this happened. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some great musicians today but, for me, you don’t get better than 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s music where songwriting still meant something. I’m raising my Gen Alpha kid to value that, too.

In both performances he sang the lyrics to "In the air tonight," but on the piano he was playing a song of his called "The roof is leaking." He was actually doing two songs at the same time.

Phil is not just a phenomenal drummer but proficient in several different instruments. Being a classically trained musician. The one thing he wasn't was a trained singer so the fact he could hit some of those notes and runs is a testament to his talent

Phil Collins is iconic! He was the drummer for GENESIS from 1970 to 1975 when Peter Gabriel (lead singer) left the group and went solo. Phil then became lead singer along with being the drummer. You have to listen to him sing this song while playing the drums. Fantastic!! I have GENESIS vinyls as well as CDs and the same with Phil Collins from his solo career. Live Aid was amazing!! Watching 24 hours of LiveAid on TV is something I will never forget. I was 20 yo. Even from the seat in my living room, I felt like I was part of something BIG because it wasn't just watching the amazing (now) legends of music playing on stage, but that this was happening because together, we were trying to save people who were dying in 2 African nations from the greatest drought causing starvation in the '80s. Very impactful and powerful. Kind of like how we came together in NYC after 9/11. A feeling that despite our differences, we were all connected.

HI, HUN. The Concert of all Concerts, was 3 days before my 24th Birthday, that July. A Lot of friends & people from work piled into my Best Friends parents big lounge, to watch, all together. We were drinking!! Proper drinks! lol & snacking from quite early in the afternoon! We all wanted to send ££ to the cause, which of course, was what it was all about. - Feeding Africa thru Bob Geldof (of The Boomtown Rats Group) - They had lots of folks manning the phones to take donations, but do you know, a lot of the phonelines were always busy, so we had to keep trying!! you couldnt electronically leave your details, back in the day. & When Bob appeared briefly later on, not filtered or bleeped out, just excitedly saying, " just give us your fu**ing money" well, we did. I'll never 4get that day. We were all there for fun, music, & FOR AFRICA. x

I was there! In Philadelphia. It was the most awesome experience I ever had. The shoes was incredible. It had to be over 100,° inside the stadium. The sun shine all day. I was on the field directly in from if the stage. The wiring for the stage ran under our feet. People began passing out from the heat in early evening. The Philadelphia Fire Department came around mid-afternoon and began to spray the crowd to help cool us down. Unfortunately for me, because I was standing over the wires, we couldn't get hosed but had to make out way to the sidelines if we wanted to get wet. It hurt cuz we got sprayed directly with the fire hose but it felt so good. Madonna impressed the most. She came on stage just after high noon. She was dressed in long bell bottom pants, with a high neck frill blouse covered with a crushed velvet car coat. Her performance was impeccable. I still can't believe she did 3 songs in the frigging heat in that outfit and didn't pass out. I wanted to just watching her. And she didn't miss a best singing or dancing.

Believe it or not, a friend had new technology at the time in our yard on a farm...A Satellite Dish...A HUGE SATELLITE DISH he was running experiments with and 'Live Aid' came on. It was a whole different experience since it was done in tandem on both continents and wasn't available in our area on T.V. My whole family came over; Grandparents, Mom and 6 siblings...We rocked-out together. We didn't know at the time of exactly how privileged we were to have the ability to snap-on the radio at any moment and every station had so hot a tune, we felt we missed something when listening to just one song at a time...And, Phil Collins was 'SMOKIN' from 'Miami Vice' forward more than ever before with just his music. Was a fine actor, too.

I was in England at the time of this concert (just before we came back to the US). It was freaking awesome - watched it on TV! GREAT music, GREAT performances, GREAT cause! 🙂

I wasn't there because my Mom wouldn't let me go (I was 14) but I was glued to my TV screen and it was one of the most AMAZING things I've ever seen. Performers came from all over, some having to borrow instruments to perform just because they wanted to be a part of something that existed to make the world a little better.

I was watching on the day... in fact I was working in a bar. But EVERYONE watched that show... It lasted all day... The weather in Britain was amazing the whole day and over the whole country... something that isn't heard of in Britain... And I don;t know about America but I can confirm that All over the country there were times of the day when the streets were empty of people. It was a Phenomenon... something that hadn't been seen before and wouldn't been seen again. Just an amazing thing for Bod Geldof and Midge Ure to pulll off... And all because of a news reports from war torn Africa and the starvation that was happening because of it. Two musicians and their need to do something... times were different then for sure. Keep on Rocking. PS: Phil Collins is a s much more than Tarzan and this song... In the band Genesis since 1971.... and many side projects with different styles of music, jazz, soul, progressive etc, etc.

This event may have started the first "watch party"! My friends and I gathered around the tv and watched the whole show. We were all about 20 yrs old and none of us went to work that weekend. Totally worth it, lol.

I was 18 at this time. I watched all the concert in the UK and the US loved every minute of it. I now have it on DVD too. It was a moment that will stay in history. I don't think it could be beaten again but I sure hope they at least try to match it! xx

The day before was my 21st birthday. I was flipping channels when I got home from celebrating and it was just starting (4 am in L.A.). Queen's performance is iconic. I never went to bed that night.

. We all watched it, the whole world watched. It was the biggest event of our time & it was truly exhilarating! In the tragedy of the Ethiopian famine Bob Geldorf got the world's entertainers to drop their egos & plans and do something wonderful that radiated within nearly every American home & most of the world. It was a once in a century musical event, emergency relief effort and a moment the world sang & wooped it up all together. In solidarity many other countries had performances in Tokyo, Moscow & 5 other nations as well.

Have loved Phil Collins and Genesis for way to many years. 85’ I had a 5 and 2.5 years old, life was way different, but I watched live aid, we all danced and watched. Seems more epic now then back then, maybe due to Freddy ! I love seeing your reaction to artists that are legendary, makes me appreciate them a whole bunch more. Phil Collins and Genesis drew sell-outs at Wembley for 4 nights straight in the mid-80s! He is an animal. Just off stage on the first London stage is Sting. Nice company.

Love this song and most of the stuff by Phil Collins as well as the former Genesis lead singer, Peter Gabriel. Great talents. Also glad that Phil had a good show in the US to make it worth the flight over. He sure got enough headache trying to fill in as one of two drummers on Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven -- that they really didn't practice so it didn't sound great and there was a lot of finger-pointing.

The day was amazing the filling was amazing and the amount of money raised was unbelievable.

Live Aid is such an amazing memory for me. It took place on my 18th birthday...I would have normally been out celebrating my birthday, but me, like everyone I knew was glued to their TV watching this once in a lifetime concert.

I am a 71 year old gal, I watched this at home with a group of friends in the far west of England, who made our own night of it. The most astonishing live performances, the atmosphere, around the country was mighty special when you know that Bob Geldof put this whole thing together in an incredibly short period of time, to raise worldwide awareness and money to help with the situation in many parts of Africa at the time. Check out the story behind it. Often we remember the concert, let’s face it, who can forget, but need a reminder of why it happened at all. It was the first worldwide fundraiser of its kind and while many have tried to emulate it, those performances were what made it everything it was. Unforgettable!

Live Aid was brilliant, I couldn’t go because I had a three year old and a one year old child. We had it on tv all day and danced around the house for hours.

I graduated in 1986 so my generation music. As I remember he wrote this song while going through marital problems and it was a message to his wife to "Hold on" to our relationship but at the same time a message to the dude she was having an affair with. It goes along with his other song "Don't let him steal your heart away". Like "if you were drowning, I would not lend a hand and I seen it with my own 2 eyes. I've been waiting for this moment all my life" To me it means "The moment I'm going to kick your Ass!"😆 It debued on an episode of Miami Vice. The sound mixture with the show was revolutionary for the time. Had me on the edge of the couch. The drum break out to me is Combo combo combo jab jab and kockout!

No beat drop because Collins is playing piano - which is the only instrument besides his voice. I love the beat drop, too - but this piano version probably helped tremendously in the logistics of swapping out band equipment behind the curtain for the AMAZING 16-hour live production that was Live Aid.

He performed this song and Against All Odds at both venues. In London, he also sang two songs with Sting (Long, Long, Way to Go - Phil’s song with Sting on backing vocals - and the Police’s Message in the Bottle, with Sting singing lead.) in Philadelphia, he played drums for Eric Clapton’s set and for Led Zeppelin’s infamous “reunion.” The latter was a disaster because Jimmy Page was drunk, Robert Plant’s voice was a mess, and Phil and the other drummer were not in synch. Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin fans blamed Phil for ruining the set, but everyone contributed to the disaster.

He flew on Concorde it only took him 3hours to get there. The world may have moved forward but air travel has moved backwards 🤷‍♂️
