I think a lot of youngins who are into players slamming on the drums and smashing on the guitar with heavy power chords from the get go, probably start watching this and can't get into the vibe of the long buildup, suspense and tension....the true story telling of music and song. They end up turning it off and miss out on the fantastic climax that is one of the best drum solo finishes in the business

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizer (yes, he was playing two keyboards), Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Phil Collins has SO much great music. He writes most of it. A real musician. Listen to some of his ballads. YOU WILL LOVE THEM! Oh, and you may also fall in love with Peter Gabriel. They both played and sang with the rock band Genesis. 'In Your Eyes' by Peter is special. Great West African feel to that song.

Good music always hits you in the soul, on a cellular level. These musicians give a part of themselves for their fans. No electronics at all!
@gillsimo5610

Well now....in no way would I ever attempt to belittle this performance...by everyone....including sound/lighting engineers. it is clearly exceptional as a live performance. No electronics at all is a bit of a stretch though? Good as it is there's a hell of a lot of signal/sound processing going down & that iconic drum drop isn't likely to be as straight forward as it appears either. Yeah, we're all taken aback by your man sitting down, picking up his sticks & apparently instantly beating the merry hell out of that kit but that kit almost certainly had pickups feeding midi triggers which in turn produced drum sounds from a sound module....in other words he could have tapped those drums with his fingers & that huge, powerful, sound would still have been produced, all pre programmed with effects in that sound module. Done to utter perfection for sure....but not without electronics at all!

Phil Collins started as the drummer in a progressive rock band called Genesis. When the singer left, he took over vocals as well. This song was from a solo album he released in the early 1980s. Rumor was that it was about him witnessing gangsters hiding a body, but it was actually about him finding out his wife was unfaithful. Sadly, he has severe back problems, and can no longer drum; but his son has started drumming for him in concerts. BTW, love the look you have for this one :)

@@mikeklesic7535 I believe he started in a band called Flaming Youth? Joined Genesis at age 19. Brand X came several years later, playing with them between Genesis albums/tours. I actually saw him with Brand X would of been 75 or 76, small gig in a function room above a pub! Could see his every move at close quarters. Anyone who says he is not world class drummer, never saw Brand X!

This was back in the era when singers knew how to sing, before auto tune was used. I believe the 80's/90's were the greatest decades of music that will never be seen again. I was lucky enough to see Phil during a show during this concert tour when he was at Tacoma and the crowd was absolutely electric! He was/is an amazing musician, song writer and entertainer and master drummer all rolled into one. Everyone knows the iconic drum piece in this song and has done their own beat to it on their desk, steering wheel or whatever was handy whenever this song was played, I know I always do, not to mention I love seeing people's first time reactions to it! If you really want to see a master drum class, check out this Phil Collins/Chester Thompson drum duet. If/when you do, leave me a comment, I would love to hear your comments about it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qadjpa2Ju5q2ZHk.html

I agree,it's great when you jive with the music/song but half the enjoyment of this particular song is just watching the whole thing esp' when he's approaching the drums up top and then the intro rolldown on the toms,that is,I would say,the most well known drum part in the world..Again,my opinion only.. 🎼😮

When this song came out, most peoples first exposure to it was not from the radio but the pilot episode of a new TV show called Miami Vice. After apprehending a dangerous drug lord, two undercover cops learn there is a traitor among them that allowed him to escape. They have to go back undercover, quite probably to their deaths, to catch him again. The emotional impact this song brings to the scene skyrocketed it to the top of the charts. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5efYLGIs9O1fIE.html

@@lovethreactions It got a lot of time on the radio after this, plus Phil Collins's voice is very distinctive. This sequence in the TV show of Crockett and Tubbs on the long drive to the marina had an almost Old Western movie vibe to it which is enhanced by Tubbs loading a sawed off shotgun. The scene was shot like a music video which became a trademark shooting style of the show. They would bring in many popular musicians for the show, some already famous (like Collins) and some that would see their careers get a boost by featuring on Miami Vice. Some of them would guest star or make a cameo on the show, including Collins. He has several of his songs in the show as well as guest appearing in one episode playing a conman.
