Tom "Durrrr" Dwan and Phil Hellmuth have quite a history. Phil has been known to berate Tom after getting the worst of it, and gets absolutely furious when losing to him. Perhaps that's why he stubbornly refuses to let go of unsuited rags for a massive pot in this high stakes cash game. Should Phil be looking up Tom so aggressively, or is he just setting himself up to get owned once again?
As always, Doug breaks down each street of action. Poker Hands is the show where Doug analyzes live poker hands from tv poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Ike Haxton, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Ivey, and OtB_RedBaron.

S Xyua Li and what about the times he doesnt have a TX? I mean is he overbeting JJ?, QTs? QJs? KQ? All the other bluffs? Or is he allways overbeting? And if he isn't, then when he makes it half pot in this Spot what does it mean?. Thats not a good strategy. Doug isn't talking about this exact hand, he is talking about all of Tom Dwans range.

S Xyua Li he is tottaly basing in hes image of crazy and hellmuth tilting to shove there (hellmuth insta called the turn bet). But Doug always based his análisis in a more gto play and how you would make money in the long term if u face the exact same spot a ton of times. But in live póker It tends to be more explotative, in fact i dont think dwan is ever bluffing in this exact same spot, hellmuth is tilted and he es just gonna call. Dude...these guys give you some really good advice and you're apparently not taking it. In Poker, trying to maximize the value of one single hand in a single spot can be detrimental to your overall strategy as pointed out above. Being greedy and forgetting about all the other hands you could have in that situation is not how you want to play poker, unless you don't care about winning longterm. That river commentary is just exactly how you want to think about poker and it is successful on any limit out there.

Dwan bet almost pot on the turn with his trips for two reasons 1) protect against a draw heavy board and 2) more importantly, he knows phil knows his rep - such a big bet looks like a bluff and disguises his strength. Phil meanwhile does a poor job acting, snap calling to rep strength when if anything it looked weak

Disregarding the level of dynamic between Tom and Phil this hand is a good example of, how big losses on the river can often be traced back to mistakes in the preflop game. The problem with a hand like 97 is, that even when you hit, you usually hit a weak second or third pair, which never beat any of your opponents value range. But you have "something", so you gradually let yourself suck into a larger and larger pot with a mediocre hand.

Terrible Analysis on the river Doug. Tom jamming it against Hellmuth is perfect play. And Hellmuth is just the perfect person to do that against. Hellmuth's ego is too big and he hates it when younger poker players think they can bully him. That's why in this situation, Hellmuth is likely to call even though it's an easy fold.

He’s talking about a more long-term, mathematical approach. If Dwan isn’t playing these stakes all the time, it’s not bad to be exploitative in this one instance. But people at home shouldn’t be pulling this online at their regular tables, it’s -EV.
@24magiccarrot
@24magiccarrot 5 жыл бұрын
+12InchesUnBuffed Here's what it comes down to, if your opponents bluff rate isn't zero in this situation then your call rate with a small pair can't be zero, otherwise you give your opponent immunity to bluff the river every time, cause most of the time you haven't got it, it's an intentionally polarizing bet from Dwan, he either has the goods or he's bluffing, you just need to decide how often you are going to call in this spot. But what you don't see is the long term effect this call does have, cause Hellmuth likely doesn't make such a light call against Dwan again for another 100 times this spot arises because he knows it's unlikely that Dwan will 3 barrel bluff him as often knowing he will face the possibiity of being called light, but also Hellmuth just needs to play his monsters in exactly the same way he played this hand and he will get paid off by hands like TPTK that might think Hellmuth is calling light. Note calling here shouldn't be your go to play, only use it when up against people you are likely going to be playing a lot in the future. Make the light call, show it then tighten up and watch your monsters get paid off when you play them the same way.
@24magiccarrot
@24magiccarrot 5 жыл бұрын
@@timmtheilig6827 If you are only calling with top pair you are giving your opponent immunity to bet every time profitably. Even if your opponent bets 2x the pot every time you need to call at least 1 in 3 times just to make that bet not profitable for your opponent to do so blindly. You will have top pair less often than 1 in 3 times. If you are folding every time you don't have top pair or better then I invite you to my home game I'm going to just bet every hand cause I know you aren't calling unless you've got it, and as long as my bet sizing is in proportion to often you don't have it I'll make a shit ton of money from you.

Going all in on the river was genius.... Tom knew that if phil had a ten who wouldn't have snap called the turn the way he did......... He puts helmuth on a queen or a flush draw. If it was the flush draw any bet wouldn't get helmuth to call really and if it's the queen might as well go all in on the hopes that helmuth really snap called cuzz he's frustrated..... And he does look frustrated lolol. I guess you just gotta hope he doesn't have two queens.... but again...... if he did, then he wouldn't have snap called the turn.

Dwan clearly recognises that given his 4bet preflop, a Ten shouldnt be in his range, making him either have quads, Qs full or a bluff. Thereby his overbet shove looks like its often a bluff. Great bet !

I like Dwan's bet on the turn. Phil can certainly have hands like a 7 or a weak Q. He checked he flop and the 10 is not that good of a card, so it's highly unlikely he is going to bet if Dwan checks over to him. So Dwan misses on a lot of value by not betting.

To be fair to Hellmuth, Dwan checkback on the flop would have thrown me for a loop. After Phil calls the turn, particularly against Durr, he has to ready to call the river after the board bricks out. Nevertheless, I think this hand is just a lesson why not to play 97 in a 4 bet pot, because you end of in a bad situation about 99% of the time (having said that, I am still gonna do it).

Tom bluffs a lot, so the probability of Phil calling thin with a Q or 7 is way more likely than him having a better T or boat. Jam is perfect play given Tom's image, and given that tons of draws missed. The fold is only obvious if your opponent is super ABC and only shoves with the nuts and never bluffs, which is not the case with Tom.

Tom representing a bluff on the end was perfect. Dwan isn't checking usually on the flop with a pair of 10's or Q's. So another 10 coming makes it less likely that he has a 10 and Helmuth's 7 is good. Especially with Dwan betting reasonably big on the turn.
@rd-pd8xb
@rd-pd8xb 6 жыл бұрын
I think you're wrong about the reason for the overbet on the river. Dwan knows that Phil wants to beat him badly. He knows that Phil wants to make a sick hero call. Plus, Dwan had 4-bet out of the blinds preflop and could have AK diamonds that missed. The overbet is a polarizer: "Either I have it or I don't". With the flop being so textured, a missed draw is very likely. I suppose if Dwan really had a big draw on the flop, he probably would've bet it, but since he is playing out of position and Phil had already raised Eli and then called Dwan's 4-bet, he could also have put him on a big hand as well and checked the flop instead. In the end, however, the overbet shove on the river is something that Dwan does a lot with bluffs or monsters. I think there is no question in his mind that he's good here, though, and he's relying on Phil trying make a hero call with garbage.
@rd-pd8xb
@rd-pd8xb 6 жыл бұрын
As I continued listening to you discuss the river after typing the above, I think we are both basically saying the same thing. Nice analysis. No matter how much you want to beat someone, though, you have to find the right spot. Phil just couldn't resist looking like a beast by hero calling against his nemesis.

As a novice player my first thought on the river shove by Dwan is Hellmuth seems to like to slow play AA KK post flop especially against aggressive players, With regards to value Doug didn't mention those as holding that might call, it seemed to me Hellmuth might take a similar line with those cards, what am I missing? Thanks!

Doug, I will tell you what Helmuth is thinking....he doesn't think Dwan would bet that big if he had a ten or if he had a queen either. Plus there is so many flush and straight draws out there.

I have a question. when Tom checks the flop after 4-betting, isn't his hand kind of face up as JJ,99, pair of 10s or pair of 7s? I know it makes sense to check those hands but in general it really caps players' range. do people really check a set or an overpair on that board?not likely, especially since its fairly wet. do people check AK/ on that board? not likely, since its just giving up on a 30k pot after you 4-bet and it makes your 4-bets suck. the best hand I can see people checking in Tom's spot is QJs and the worst one is 76s while a bunch of draws bet.

I think Doug doesn't take in count of toms tragedy of poker in general where he gets into people's heads and make them believe he'll bluff in a lot of spots. I know it's a vague statement but that's why tom was so good back in these days bc he knew how to play the typical high stakes live players back in the day.

That's why I don't play crap cards like that. You always hit low or middle pair and get caught having to make tough decisions. 77 on that board looked really bad, can't believe he called all in

Hey Doug, love your analysis! Is there nothing to be said here for the fact that the larger bet sizing of Dwan on the turn and river indicate he's betting a polarized range? Hellmuth was clearly bluff-catching in this hand, and shouldn't he be correct to do that once the flop checks through and none of the draws (diamonds and the various straight draws, which he mostly does not block) complete? I agree that Hellmuth's mistake in this hand was clearly preflop - he should just fold to Elezra's open, and certainly to Dwan's 4bet - but once he gets to the flop couldn't it be argued that there is some merit to his play? I think this train of thought was in his mind once he says "I'm gonna look like an idiot if I'm wrong and a genius if I'm right." Anyway thanks again for vid, I have learned a huge amount from all your analysis on KZfaq and various articles you wrote for Upswing.com. I was sorry to hear that you retired from poker but I remember you saying in one video that sometimes great players decide to amass a fortune and ride off into the sunset, and I guess that's what you decided to do. Would love to see you back one day and wish you all the best with your future endeavours! - Sean

Doug, wasn't the original quote also from you, but delivered to A.Torelli after he called your bluff in that very hand just featured in that montage ? Pretty sure you said, then, "What are the chances that 8 - 6 runs into Jacks?" LOL! - my ALL-TIME favorite live comment immediately after losing a HUGE pot!

i personally love durrs river jam. before he made it i was thinking he should make a smaller value bet that would be easier to call but once he shoved it made perfect sense. it was a huge super polarized bet and, being aware of his table image, it was cool to see him play it in a way that looked like he was following up on a turn bluff. i think a smaller bet would have looked more like a value bet and helmuth might have been more likely to fold. maybe he knew helmuth was sick of being pushed around and was likely to make a loose call so he got max value. that being said, you're amazing Doug. im struggling to move out of microstakes and youre a superstar so im in no position to say you are wrong. its just my personal opinion.

You guys need to stop with the hate on Doug declaring that a spot is a close decision. Poker is about solving the puzzle your opponent is creating, while creating one yourself. Sometimes, calling in a spot creates a good puzzle while missing out on value, and raising is great for value, but bad for your puzzle. When Doug says a spot is close, what he means is it that that specific decision isn't without sacrifice. Not only do decisions run close in poker for the most part overall, the exact hands Doug decides to review are almost always really interesting and dynamic in nature, so decisions will be even closer on average.

I've never understood about poker after dark. What is the format? It it just a cash game? Or is it some kind of tourney? I see it gets down to heads up sometimes, but the blinds never seem to go up. Fun video tho
