Upon leaving the Marine Hotel in North Berwick on Sunday, Phil Mickelson announced to his wife Amy that he was going out to “bring home the Claret Jug” and win The Open Championship.
No matter that the American started the day five strokes behind Lee Westwood, he was as good as his word - finally earning the Champion Golfer of the Year crown at Muirfield.

This is his best win, idk if it’s his career defining moment, both the 2004 and 2010 masters are more iconic moments in Phil’s career, but this is his best professional victory without question. Still his best stretch of play was in 05-06 when he nearly won 3 majors in a row, a stretch that also included an 11-shot win at a tour event

I agree, I think the 2004 Masters was the most significant win of his career - finally getting that first major after so long without winning one but I think his greatest achivement was winning the Open in 2013, especially after such a disappointment just a month earlier at Merion. He's always had the game to win at Augusta and always felt comfortable there, it was just a case of putting it together when it mattered but the Open was a different ball game and also that leaderboard on the Sunday at Muirfield contained a lot of great players.

So wild that I followed this man's journey, especially at the majors through so many heartbreaks and close calls before that first Masters, and now looking at everything he's done since. Quite astonishing just how competitive he was for such a long time. He has 23 top 3s and 11 runner ups to go with the 5 wins (in Major championships). He had a span in which he finished 7th or higher in the Masters in 15 out of 21 years and had 9 top 3s! Think about that. That's having 9 legitimate chances at winning a single tournament, let alone one where the best in the world are playing at the top of their game. Similarly, he's had comparable stretches where he's been in the top 5 or 3 in at least ONE major for like 15 or 16 years in a row almost. And as good as this round was, 2016 vs Stenson was even better IMO, just somehow outplayed by Henrik. What a privilege to have been watching all along!

Yea Phil’s only other real shot at the British was at troon in 04 where he needed to hole out from the rough on the last hole to join the playoff. Every other year he was mid-20s or worse, with several MCs. His high spin ballflight never really worked. But he went all out to win this tourney, playing in the Scottish Open despite Barclays no longer being the sponsor, and putting a 2 wood in the bag in place of his driver and 3 wood

That was one of the best rounds of all time. I remember watching all the players really struggling with those closing holes. They were remorselessly difficult and mickelson went -4 on that stretch. The 17th was ridiculous, straight into the teeth with most needing a full shot into the green for their third and he knocks it on in 2. Incredible. Had it wrapped up with the last group still on the 14th.
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 3 жыл бұрын
That 2 wood he put in the bag for this tourney won it for him. Whenever Phil goes all out to win a tourney he usually does or comes close. Remember his 2 drivers strategy at the 06 Masters? This was a no driver strategy and it led to him having the only club in the field that could get home in 2 on 17. Two whacks of that 2 wood traveled further under tough links conditions than everyone else’s driver-3 wood combo

The Masters is prestigious, the US Open is uniquely American, the USPGA claims the most distinguished field (though that is certainly up for debate) and the WGC events have uniquely international fields, but say what you want, if there is such a thing as a World Championship in golf then surely it is The Open Championship.

Of all the golfing greats from the USA, Mickelson was the perhaps the most American, and in the two weeks here, he won the Scottish Open, then this British Open. He has always been a prodigious talent, but dominated in the US, and this shows he was an international champion. Like Nicklaus, Hogan, Tiger, Watson etc who won in the Open. He's lost some majors too! Every golfer of this era has had to compete with Tiger Woods, who made the winning of majors harder
