When Phil was changing his set up with the chunky barrels, in the premier league while still with Unicorn, it took a few weeks to get it right, I remember and still smile about it to this day when Manley beat him and Peter took the board down to sign effin' quality 😂

Peter Manley is actually a really nice guy despite a few spats with other players here and there. Does a huge amount for the game as chairman of the Players’ Union.

I remember that game… Manley beat him 8-3 in the Premier League on the Thursday in February 2008 and I played him a couple of days later in Stoke on Trent in a meet up at the Roebuck Inn and I remember looking at his new chunky darts, they were the Unicorn Sigma Pro dart, thinking they just weren’t right for him and I sat with him and chatted for probably a good couple of hours and conversation turned to his darts. Being someone who had knowledge of Unicorn’s range at the time, I was aware of a new dart Unicorn had called the Golden Hero range which was player signature darts with a Phil Taylor grip and suggested he tried the John Lowe version and if he liked them, get Unicorn to make a 26gram version (they originally were made in 20, 22 and 24 grams) in a slightly longer dart. His wife at the time had a set, he tried them, loved them and Unicorn made a 26gram version that were called the Phase 5 and he won 3 world championships with them.

I think this in just the pattern you can see in many "(one of the) best of the sport" athletes. I immediatly think of Michael Schumacher, who had many controversies, as well as Ronny O'Sullivan and all of his antics. I guess you don't get good in a single thing without being a bit weird.

Trying to get an advantage over your opponent is nothing wrong, even morally. You're there to win, not to be a nice guy and make friends. If your opponent is put off by it then they need to work on themselves first to be the bigger person and become unphased by such mindgames. In football players dive, lie on the ground making faces as if they are dying on the spot to get a foul called, only to run around again 2 minutes later. Yet nobody is annoyed at that or thinks it's morally wrong?

Their head2head would suggest otherwise. MVG will never achieve what Mr Taylor has, he's just too damned arrogant and inconsistent.

@@alexanderjames6328it's not that. MVG plays in a totally different era. In Taylor's time, he was the only one who could hit 100+ averages consistently. Now you get guys outside the top twenty in the world who can comfortably hit ton plus averages. The level of competition MVG is up against is so much tougher than what Taylor felt.

@@Josh_J9 And every year Micheal got a little bit better. Until he had Phil well and truly beat. For me the question is more; when was the moment MvG took over as the 'big boy of darts' It could be the whitewash in the premier league, but I think it was the 2016 final of the world matchplay. When Phil, knowing he was beat, turned up the antics, cause he knew that outplaying his opponent was no longer an option. Either way, it was Micheal van Gerwen that raised the level of the game. And sent Phil Taylor into retirement. Finally.

@@ZZZzzzap12 hahaha your dumb Phil got to final of the 2018 world Championship after that so no mvg didn't send him into retirement, and its just world's that matter at the end of the day no one cares about any other title and phil played Michael 3 times in world's n panned him 3 times the 2013 final was absolutely hilarious to see micheal in tears 🤣🤣🤣🤣. MVG 3 world titles that is shocking considering hes in his prime should be on 7 8 by now.

⁠⁠⁠⁠@@jamiehayes5888how old are you, 12? Phil Taylor has 16 world titles and is billed as such, and two of them are BDO titles. I’m guessing Bristow has no world titles? Jockey Wilson? The BDO fell off massively after Barney left in 2006.
