got to trade fours with Mr. Woods when i was in grad school in 1998. We played his original compositions and arrangments. He quoted on broadway and i quoated it back to him and he was like yeah man. big thrill to this day.

Live at the Showboat - Best album ever
@bocambern7069 жыл бұрын
Phil Woods and Michele Legrand performed Images by Michele Legrand and won the 1975 best composition of the year (Michele Legrand) and best performance with a big band (Phil Woods). This was only available on LP (record album for the newbies) and has been released on an import CD that has been amazingly reproduced for digital. I feel this is the best Phil Woods performance ever done in a studio. I got mine on Amazon for only about 7 bucks. If you're a Phil Woods fan and have not heard this, you need to do it! There are several other covers on the CD, but Images was an original Michele Legrand composition he wrote on a plane trip to Europe just days before the world debut of this piece. You won't regret!

Love the guy, but seriously Yamaha? yuck
@thomasfadden33946 жыл бұрын
I can say this since I knew Phil. If Yamaha came to you and asked you to help design their new saxophone line after Selmer never did squat for you, would you play a Yamaha sax? Besides, Phil played a Yamaha soprano for years before at least since the “I Remember” album. I had the pleasure of being at a concert at East Stroudsburg University in the early 2000’s and sitting in front of Phil that evening. To his right was his wife Jill and to his left was the chief saxophone designer for Yamaha. That’s how closely they worked together on that horn. For the time when that sax was introduced, NOTHING could touch it for the price. Now Taiwan has their act together and is making some great horns too. Lieb’s Keilwerth soprano is not as German as you think 😉 And if I could buy a new tenor the Eastman 52nd St is a killer horn that sounds as good as any vintage horn without all the intonation problems! RIP Phil and Eric. Thanks for all the years of your work with the COTA Cats...

Yamaha - Yuck?! Do you know what saxophones Soviet musicians use? "Leningrad" and "Amati", and other shit(sorry, but I don't know what other word to call these models of saxophone, because no one note sounded in tune, some details were made of bad metal and etc. ). And with these "instruments" Russian jazzmen played no worse than American! And you still say, that Yamaha - Yuck?! 😠😠😠

I'd sure like to hear the Pianist on a Steinway. Yammer Hammers just sound sterile to me...
@zenpharaohs10 жыл бұрын
This is why the best pianos on the planet (and there are at least two of them like this) are Yamaha C7 with Abel hammers.
@marike11009 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's not the piano as more jazz pianists play Yamaha than any other brand in the world.
@terrryc9 жыл бұрын
zenpharaohs I didn't know about the after-market hammers. That makes PERFECT Sense to me. Thank you for the "Head's Up". Now i'll be looking for a retro-fitted Yammer Hammer...
@zenpharaohs9 жыл бұрын
Terry Corcoran Yeah the guy who did these is Johnny O'Brien who buys a used Yamaha and rebuilds the action. He is based in New Orleans and works for a ton of famous players and is the main piano tech at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. I'm just some casual pianist, but I love mine, even though it is on loan to the Copeland festival. The other one is at Water Music Studios, so you can hear them on a lot of records. If you find one, you won't go wrong.
@terrryc9 жыл бұрын
Yamahas are too "Bright" with a weak mid-range tone. Baldwins are too "Fuzzy". They CAN be good Pianos when the right technician tweaks them. Steinways are a little better balanced throughout their range. The German stuff (Bluthner, Bechstein, Bogendorfer) are too Dark. It's like Harry Connick, Jr. vs. Frank Sinatra. Connick is good technically, but No Balls. Sinatra has COJONES. That's why we still listen to him. THEN, there's saxophones. Phil sounds better on a SELMER...

Bullshit! Phil sounds fantastic on any horn he touches....I love his 82ZUL...beautiful.
@gregkingston20878 жыл бұрын
+Terry Corcoran I must admit that he does sound a bit different to when he played the mark 6 but I have the same horn UL and it is an amazing horn. Ive had many vintage horns including conn 26m 30m etc and Ive ended up keeping my custom 82z horns. One of the main reasons Phil went for the 82z was because its so free blowing which at his age he, I guess felt was important to him. You can see in his later years playing that he is out of puff a bit when he finishes.
