Superlative saxophone playing from Phil Woods and his Quartet ... (not sure if this might not be his original 'European Rhythm Machine') ... George Gruntz on piano; Henri Texier on bass; and Daniel Humair on drums..

I think about 60 million sax players, including myself, looked to Phil Woods for serious inspiration. I still can't hit runs like he did...and I've been playing for years.

The work Woods & his European Rhythm Machine performed changed my life forever; especially the 1970 Frankfurt Freedom Jazz Festival. I have listened to it more than any other piece of music, & I have a BA in music. The skill & emotions are at their peak for the entire performance. It is simply breathtaking & still tears me up to this day.

Wonderful. Phil Woods, probably the most skilled around alto player, including session, big band, small group. Got to get more of this.

I found Phil Woods thanks to Paul Simon's "Have a Good Time" from his album Still Crazy After All These Years. Woods also ruled in "Doctor Wu" from the Steely Dan's Katy Lied. Both albums were from 1975, the year I graduated from high school. Quite a year for me.

That's the business right there. Phil playing his New York Meyer USA 5m here he picked up in the mid or late 60s. A little known secret of Phil's is that he swaps between this piece and the old Meyer Bros 5m piece given to him by Oliver Nelson. The dead giveaway is the Selmer ligature on the above mouthpiece as the earlier pieces were too fat for a Selmer ligature to fit. What's funny about Phil is he'll deny it until the day he dies, but the proof is right there! haha. Gotta love Phil

+Selmerpilot He bought a Selmer in Paris of '59 at the Selmer factory, with Bud Johnson, when he was with Quincy's band in Europe. Marcel Mule was there on a Saturday & helped him pick it out. Henri Selmer charged him $75 with a trade-in. I have heard him tell the story before. It's an M6.

forget to mention the date... March 27, 1969. George Gruntz would be replaced by Gordon Beck
