Tony Kubek should be in the baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. He was the first one that I remember really explaining the game to the fans, giving insights that only one who played in the majors could give.

I had been married two weeks when this game was played. Will celebrate our 52nd this June.

I was 8 years old when this game was played. My brother, who started my CUBS fandom, was in Vietnam serving a tour of duty with the Marines. We exchanged letters that year and a lot of the content was about the CUBS season.

My Dad would stand up and put his hand over his heart while the National anthem played on the tv.

On 1969 As 12 year olds We would ride the Train 120miles and hop on the Subway which would turned into the L . We would get off at Wrigly field and watch a Double header and ride home again 120 miles back to the Farm .Greatest Memories ever !!❤

Johnny Briggs was a terrific and highly underrated baseball player. He could have easily been named an all-star during his years with the Brewers.

What a sweet infield the Cubs had

Larry Hisle was a terrific ball player. He was one of the original "Bambi's Bombers" in 1978. Sadly, his shoulder gave out in 1979, and he was never the same after that.

I;m a Canadian and there is no doubt Ferguson Jenkins is Canada's greatest baseball player. I remember when Jenkins pitched and u could get the game on american television via Buffalo, the family was huddled around the old black and white tv.

I used to go to so many Cubs games in 1969. I was 12 years old and saw so many great players. The Cubs blew it after a double digit lead to the Mets. Those days the Cubs with 4 Hall of Famers on this team had no night games. It had to be rough playing day games after West Coast games then the August and September heat, humidity played a factor. One of the greatest Cubs teams I ever saw that never won the pennant. They were really good. Banks, Williams, Santo, and Jenkins. Beckett and Kissinger were solid infielders. Ken Holtzman threw a couple of no hitters. Maybe with lights and night games things would have been different.

This is a real treat to see these games again! My late cousin Julio and I use to watch these games in the Sixties! These broadcasts are truly a treasure trove! Thank You!!!

1969, as close as Ernie Banks ever got to the post-season. Year of the Miracle Mets. I was in the army, stationed in Washington DC. I got permission to take a night job ushering at RFK Stadium for Senators games, watching my idol Ted Williams manage the hapless Senators to a respectful season. Great memories.

As a person who works during daytime, I would be a White Sox fan, if I lived in the Chicago area, because Old White Sox Park had lights, for night games.

Born in 1953 and always a Cardinals fan I sure remember this 1969 season. I play the amazingiy realistic Strat-o-matic Baseball games and besdies other teams as well, I have all the contender teams from 1960-1969. Even though I remember this year as the collapse of the Cubs and the Amazing Mets, the Mets did win around 100 games and the Cubs won around 92 games. The Cubs had a good staff with Jenkins, Hands, and Holtzman, but that Mets staff with Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman was exceptional. Thanks for placing on KZfaq. Gowdy and Kubek were such a great announcing team.They talked eating fish that Curt caught in Wyoming. In a few years Curt would host a great show called the American Sportsman.

Four days before Apollo 11 took off from Cape Canaveral. Eight days from this broadcast, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon.

This is so weird watching a game I probably watched as a 8yo kid in Philly. Two yrs later Rick Wise pitched a no-hitter and hit 2 HRs in the game., Amazing feat never to be duplicated.

I remember getting up early on Saturday mornings in the late '60s and early '70s during the spring and summer to mow the lawns I was hired to do in the neighborhood. I'd collect my pay , head to the convenience store for a Dr. Pepper and some Baseball Cards then head home to watch the game of the week . Baseball was at its best back then .

Willie Smith was one of the best power hitters to come off the Cubs bench.

Johnny Briggs of Paterson, New Jersey. I remember back then, whenever the Phillies played the Mets whenever the Met announcers mentioned Johnny Briggs they'd say he was from Paterson, New Jersey, and later, when he was traded to the Brewers and they played the Yankees, the Yankee announcers would say the same thing. I used to think "of Paterson, New Jersey" was part of Johnny Briggs's name. I guess because being from Paterson made him a local product in the New York area they, the New York announcers, would bring it up. Jimmy Qualls in centerfield for the Cubs three days after he broke up Tom Seaver's perfect game.

I was just under two months old at the time. If only they knew what was coming in just a few weeks. I hope all those that experienced the heartbreak of 1969 felt the tremendous joy of 2016.

This was a great Cubs team. Four Hall of Famers. Durocher wore team down keeping regulars in almost every game. Plus, wanted to be center of attention. As you can tell from his interview with Kubek, Leo had already antagonized some Chicago writers. This was not NYC or Boston. Chicago very forgiving of its teams. Mets caught fire based on great pitching, but this Cubs’ starting eight pretty tough to beat. Only issue was centerfield. Hickman the regular right fielder instead of Smith.

Wow Hisle had his two best years in the AL right before 1979 where he never played that much after that After the 1977 season, Hisle became a free agent and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 1978, Hisle turned in another productive year as he hit .290 and finished third in AL MVP voting. His 34 home runs, 115 RBIs and 96 runs scored placed second, third, and fifth in the American League respectively. A torn rotator cuff suffered in 1979 limited Hisle's playing time for the remainder of his career, as he played in only 79 games over his final four seasons before retiring in 1982.

Mike Ryan was one of several catchers of that era (Dave Duncan and Frank Fernandez also come to mind) who had low batting averages but could hit home runs if they hit the ball at all. Rick Wise hit .270 that year, while Ryan finished at .204. Of course, it didn't occur to manager Bob Skinner to move Wise further up in the lineup.

It's hard to believe now, but back then the Cubs weren't the favorites of the baseball world like they are now. Very few people outside of Chicagoland loved those "big, bad, mean Chicago Cubs." The Mets were viewed as Snoopy and the peanuts gang, while the Cubs were viewed as Charles Manson and the hells Angels. Ron Santo, worshiped by millions in Chicagoland was a hated villain thruout the rest of the league, while Leo Durocher, bore the wrath and grudges of the umpires.

Durocher's biography is one of the best baseball books you could read. Durocher is the Forrest Gump of baseball history.

I came here because I was challenged to watch a game from the 60s/70s bc of the pitch clock. Pitch clock games FEEL like this. This is great!

What’s really interesting is comparing the Cubs’ hitters production when this game was played (July12) to the end of the season. 2 1/2 months later and very little production from the Cub hitters. Blame Leo. Never rested his players and they became worn out. In comparison, Gil Hodges kept his guys fresh by platooning them.

So different from today..Rick Wise gave up 6 runs in 3 innings and he stayed in the game..Even I would’ve yanked him..Although it wasent all his fault with those errors

Just look at those stirrups, black shoes and freshly shaven men! No sissy batting gloves! I was born on August 28,1957 and was blessed to live through the most interesting era in Major League Baseball, the Sixties! Sadly, 1969 was the year both leagues expanded and introduced Divisional play! Ugh! The crappy teams that joined the Leagues were ~ National League~ The Montreal Expos The San Diego Padres American League ~ The Seattle Pilots The Kansas City Royals Another disaster was introduced into the American League in 1973 - the Designated Hitter! Ugh! Sadly, Dick Allen isn't in this game! Allen was fined $2,500 and suspended indefinitely when he failed to report to a twi-night double-header against The New York Mets. Allen has gone to New Jersey to see a horse and got caught in traffic and couldn't make it to the game. Allen hated the name "Richie" which was foisted on him by the Philadelphia media. Dick Allen believed that "Richie" was a little boy's name! Dick Allen hit a home run off Sandy Koufax at Dodger Stadium on a night damp air game on July 27,1966 which he rocketed into the left field bullpen! It was quite a feat which proved how strong Allen truly was! Dick Allen deserves to be in the Major League Hall Of Fame! He was an explosive but sadly controversial player which may have hindered his induction! Dick Allen's trade to the St. Louis Cardinals, after the 1969 season, for Curt Flood set into motion Curt Flood's challenge of Major League Baseball's "Reserve Clause" which sadly Curt Flood eventually lost. Curt Flood's challenge did eventually bring "Free Agency" to the game though.

Back in the day, all a relief pitcher had to do was get the last out to get a save. Fergie use to be a work horse. He use to finish what he started most of the time. The starters in today's game are lucky to go 6 innings or 100 pitches.
