Hard to believe this piece was written in 2000! It sounds so much like a late romantic/early modern piece.

I was really "won" during the slow movement, in spite of some asynchrone beats that I could not understand. This music is really suited to a Spanish orchestra too... Regards from France,

the strange thing about timpani is that yes they have a definite pitch, but that pitch becomes much less defined the further away from it you get, like most drums. So you end up just hearing the percussive wash of them, especially in louder parts. The solution is to mic them closely, which is how you get the full tonality, but they don't like doing that.

Lots of film scores have a substantial amount of close/spot mics dialed in for the timpani, as do many classical recordings (e.g. Solti's Mahler 3).

There are 12 timpani on that stage at one time. Insane. Granted they aren’t playing 4 of them at all... but that’s probably over $100k worth of drums in one place. Nothing compared to one violin I guess... but a lot for drums.

Espetáculo! E bem observado por alguns daqui, para mim também foi a primeira vez que vi a percussão na linha de frente, aliás, a primeira vez que vi uma obra escrita para tambores. Gênios, tanto o autor quanto os instrumentistas. Wonderful!!! Well observed by some people from here, for me it's also the first time that I saw the percussion in the front line, and the first time also that a concert was wrote to drums. Genius, the author and the instrumentists!

There is only one thing worse than a concerto for timpanist and orchestra--a concerto for two timpanists and orchestra. Lucky for us the mayhem is handled brilliantly by, maybe, the greatest composer who ever lived. I am sure I would have enjoyed this piece more if I weren't 79 years old and have taught music theory and composition for 56 years at a major institute of higher learning. In 1966, when I was 25, I replaced the mufflers on my Mustang GT so it would make more noise when I floored it. This music kinda reminds me of my misspent youth.

A great performance, but young viewers should realize that heavily compressed audio do little justice to any orchestra. Streaming chews up half of the tones. What I mean is: buy the goddam CD ("The Concerto Project Vol. I" by Philip Glass, Orange Mountain Music), use a decent stereo (a well-balanced headphone if you're broke) and you'll be able to enjoy music as it's meant to.

Small disrupt of overall timing a little after 6:00. It seems the soloists were late at a certain point near 06'11''. Well, actually, it seems both soloists and different parts of the orchestra go slightly off beat at many times.

It is just the way it was filmed. Sounds travels slower than sight so their movements look off from the sound but if you just listen to the audio they are not off at all. 😉

back in the days, timbales players used real timpani with a cowbell attached on it and stuff like that, but it has been progressively flushed away for the smaller drums we know today, though the name stayed. And "timbale" comes from the arabic "tabl", not from latin
@ruperttmls7985
@ruperttmls7985 7 жыл бұрын
Saludos.

Very impressive indeed!. Notice the unoccupied standard set of Timpani at the percussion section. But if you want dramatic variations of different pitches you need more drums and also need to tune as you are playing like at 3:27.
