More than half of the world’s population growth by 2050 will be from 8 countries. The Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country on the list.
With the establishment of the Commission on Population 1969, the Philippines have a decades-long history of population planning. But this has proved challenging in a conservative, Catholic-majority country. A Reproductive Health Law languished for over a decade before being passed. As a result, until recently, the Philippines had one of the highest birth rates in Southeast Asia. In the meantime, cities were overcrowded, and infrastructure was stretched. Overpopulation was seen as an obstacle to socio-economic development.
However, in 2022 something surprising happened. Births per woman tumbled to 1.9, a 70-year low and a decline that exceeded expectations. Have population growth targets been achieved, and what will this mean for the Philippines?

In trying not to be small-minded, I try and think of our WHOLE home, which would be the planet. And the planet is greatly overpopulated. We DONT NEED or even WANT 8 Billion people. Our population was fine 50-100 years ago, we had plenty of production power IF WE WOULD JUST DO THE WORK TO MAKE OUR LABOR MORE EFFICIENT!! We could easily produce more than we need. Now it's becoming dangerous not just for humans but for every life on earth.

*I'm happy that we are going to the right path. Filipinos are complaining about poverty but never realize that we are over populated to the point where it is the main reason of our high unemployment rate, it's not because there are few jobs but there are just too many people that leads the employers to make there standards so high because they know that a lot of people will apply no matter what.*

As one of the millennials, let me tell you why. We are a group of 10 friends, already in our 30s and only 2 got married with kids. It's not that we don't want to get married and have kids but life is hard enough, we're barely meeting ends meet. Almost 50% of my income goes to mortgage and the rest goes to other bills. We can't afford to have an additional mouth to feed if we ourselves are barely living.

The younger generation are learning fast that they can’t have the life that they want if they have babies early or have more children than what they can afford. Social media, exposure to western cultures and Filipinos working abroad contribute greatly to the changing mindset of the younger generation. Metro Manila’s problem is the concentration of business and job opportunities in greater metro Manila and not dispersed throughout the country. Poverty in the Philippines is still too high. When foreigners come to the Philippines, that’s the thing they see and comment on.
@LokaLokaokay
@LokaLokaokay Жыл бұрын
yes, I do believe poverty is still high and the concentration of jobs, businesses, and opportunities are easier to do here in Metro Manila. Also, receiving the bare minimum of wages and the scarcity of jobs in the Philippines, Filipinos tend to look elsewhere, more precisely other developed countries. I do believe that western cultures is a part of the factors of the younger generation of hesitancy to build a family or less to have children, but, it might be the the cost of living in the Philippines is quite high and expensive--- also the generational trauma of having a big family, is costly and needs more time, attention, and resources in taking care a big family.

As a Filipino, we have this mindset that we need to get married and have kids so that they’ll ‘rescue’ the family from poverty or when we’re old, someone will take care of us. Well, it’s a ‘NO’ for me. And as a female who is on her early 30’s… I will not settle down or bring a child to this world until I know for sure to myself that I’m stable and have more than enough to provide everything that they need and wants , a better life, because it’s not their choice to be here in this world. I will not allow them to experience what I did. I hope that the younger generations will focus first on their learning , education, personal growth and goals.

I am a millennial. I grew up dirt poor but managed to finish school and be a professional. I have a long time partner and both of us don’t want to have kids due to the challenges of raising a child here. Growing up poor makes you realize how hard it is to raise a child and I dont want to have a child just to make him/her experience the same hardships I experienced growing up. In my high school class (2010) we are 35 in our section, only 5 of us have kids. In my college class(2015) we are 25, only 2 of us have kids. @Hoggster Almost everything is being mechanized. An army of farmhands used to be employed to plant/harvest a hectare of rice paddy. Now, a single person can do that using tractors and whatnot. Drones are being used to apply pesticides/fertilizers unlike before. And with the advent of AI, that single person/per hectare may just be zero as even driverless vehicles are being developed. They say with AI, the world will not be needing architects, teachers, journalists, artists, construction workers, cooks, waiters, and even prostitutes, etc. The more the people, the worse the ecological impact. All that's left is 0.9 degrees C of temperature increase until climate change becomes irreversible. Imagine providing for each baby things like diapers, toys, clothes, healthcare, feeding bottles, and school supplies. And as they grow up, hobby supplies, housing, food, water, transportation, etc. That's a huge carbon footprint.

@Hoggster Not a problem. It will just be a matter of supporting the elderly, instead of babies and their mothers. A young population has a higher dependency ratio than an ageing one. (In Australia, anyway) A child is two dependents: the child and the adult who must supervise it.

@@julm7744 Its not bcoz of poverty. Poverty was never a hindrance to increased population. In fact during the 80s when the country was hit with severe economic crisis, population grew exponentially. The probable reason for birth rate decline is bcoz of the abundance of entertainment outlets, from celfone, internet, social media, gaming etc. Also people are more educated, exposed to different culture, more people have gone abroad for vacation, more people can afford to buy cars and therefore travel more. In the past, there is a joke that says, the only source of entertainment at night is playing with each other. @@bchpls24 its not that simple as the world has learned it is quite more difficult to reverse a declining population. There is a reason why india has no policy in when it comes to having a number of children even after overtaking china. If the economy is growing despite large childbirth, if you do your research, you will find out that in the grand scheme of things it is more beneficiary. Slowing population growth is what first world countries have done in the past to improve their economy only to find out that it is detrimental in the longer run ad hey have found out since highly educated people prefer having only one. Again if you do your research, birthrate must be above a certain average and we are beginning to tread the same path as the first world countries have. Christianity is often misrepresented in their eyes. Their biases filter out the truth rather than observing the truth first hand. Instead of reading the Bible in its purity, they rely on gossip and hearsays. Nuns are voluntarily celibate and yet they disagree with the notion of being childfree. God is Dead, not literally but spiritually in a collective sense as they take it too seriously than seeing it as an allegory of life itself making it lose its hopeful magic that is available during ancient times.

My grandparents were ordinary people who had no inherited wealth but had 8 kids. My grandfather was a skilled mechanic and my grandmother, a seamstress. Both of them saw that education was the ticket out of poverty. They provided for all 8 kids and they all became college graduates and had professional jobs. No one had children out of wedlock or without graduating college. All my mom’s siblings, including her had 3-4 kids each. Most of us in the next generation have 1-2 kids or none. But all of us maintain that mindset of finishing college and becoming professionals. Our grandparents have built generational wealth because of their mindset of only having kids if you can provide for a college education and raising them appropriately. My father’s side were land rich farmers and also had 8 kids. Education wasn’t a priority. My dad was the only one that strived to educate himself without help from his parents. Each child had more than 6 kids minimum except my dad who had 4. We’re the only ones from from his side of the family to be college educated and are professionals. Education and mindset is the beginning!

Philippines should be a developed country by the time it becomes an aging population. While declining birth rate is a sign of a conscious decision when considering parenthood, it - population control - is still a variable to progress. *If another variable exponentially implodes everything else implodes in catastrophe.* For Instance, China could become the Poster child of an aging middle class, despite the fact that their government (CCP) is still fundamentally communist which is ironic. The Chinese Government holds an immense power to distribute equal resources and yet they couldn't, and the same is true for their Big Tech Giants. Blaming the government, among other institutions or their relatives to submission is still one of the thousands of *variables* or conditions to consider when pleading for change. Another variable to consider is education and competence (wisdom and knowledge). If the population declines while still having less educated citizens, this would demotivate the population in proportion to other *variables.* People will send their best kids abroad and let them live there, and their kids will forever be competent and more valuable there. This will just exhaust the country of better professionals and would not encourage local and foreign investors into the country. Also if the competition of the best is held in the country, and later maximize it, then, it would encourage local participants to the best of their abilities to nurture it even with less resources and with local cooperation, therefore, attracts both local and foreign investors. Another variable is opportunity. If the population failed to educate the succeeding generations with the essential skills and associate their progress to every aspect of society, then, the society will experience a lag or even missing years to be competitive as a whole. People would not want to plant food anymore because other food is better that there will be a time that, people would only depend on exporting the food, or worse a recipe for a dish would eventually be extinct. People wouldn't ever make a boat because it wasn't cool and modern, even though it was the fastest and could take the longest trips in which could have been modernized if given the opportunity. The opportunity that could be lost without descendants to teach. These statements would only be close to accurate because the *variables* can only steer them by the common choices made by the majority. There are more plenty of variables greatly affecting the consensus of the public, and I hope most people recognize these factors or *variables* themselves other than thinking only on population control. China, Japan, and Korea will still come to a point that the help from their descendants will be necessary before the implosion of their population. This is just my opportunistic observation.

What worries me as a developmental worker is not the declining birth rate but the age when women are getting pregnant. They have become younger. Even when they reach their twenties, both of the teenager couples are not mature enough to grasp the responsibility of being a parent. And since they are still young, they are still within the fertility window so it could be true that the birth rate is declining but it also is a possibility that the babies are yet to arrive in the near future. As a young adult who is currently a college student right now in the Philippines, I am thinking months ago that time will come that our country _might_ reach a declining birth rate. I don’t even think the term ‘trend’ is enough to define how common/normal it is for my batch of them not wanting to have children in the future. Everyone* wants to prioritize their career, seizing life, and helping each of their own parents. And the thing is, despite the possibility of a declining birth rate the moment our generation takes over in the future (like in Japan or SK), such decision (of not wanting children) still makes sense to us right now. The quality of life in this country is getting worse day by day, with the expenses, traffic, employment, and environment. Today, it even takes 4.5 travel hours from my home to my university back and forth (compare to 2-3 hours pre-pandemic). I am also once a child, and if the chance was given to me to make my own family, I would not want them, especially my kids, to experience too many hardships like I did, or am experiencing even right now. There’s no denying that ‘declining birth rate’ is going to be a big problem for the country _if ever._ But, with how currently life is to commoners like me here in the Philippines, I don’t think I, or anyone I know of, will change their mind anytime soon in regards to having no babies in our future. *Our plates are full enough and we cannot afford to get another one.* *There are 2 or 3 that I know who wants to have their own family, but it comes with a factor of them wanting to migrate overseas, lol.

I'm 31 and getting alot of pressure (together with my girlfriend of same age) to get married and have kids especially from the elderly. We had to remain silent most of the time as we know that our real response would most likely raise an eyebrow or get offended. That we dont feel confident financialy to raise a child. That most of these people will say that we are only exaggerating things. But that is just how we honestly feel. Cant afford to let our future child suffer the same fate as we had, as me and my girlfriend are also product of poor families. What's worse is that this statement comes from us, both professionals (licensed engineers), and actually having relatively good careers for people of our age. Nevertheless, we still feel that what we have right now is not enough to properly raise a child. Most of our colleagues, most of same age, are on same dilemma. Cant help but think of the pressure that the less fortunate of the same age have on their shoulders. I feel sorry for our generation.

Affiliates of the Liberal Party of the Philippines promoted this Reproductive Health Law during Noynoy Aquino's era, which was supported by various political parties. The surprising thing is, the Catholic Church in the Philippines has always supported the candidates of the Liberal Party even if it violates their wishes. However, the truth is, no matter which political party promotes that, people really want to limit their families because of the hardships of life. Another fact is that poverty in the Philippines has long been used as a weapon by those with money and power to keep themselves in their current social condition. Therefore it is time to continue this trend for the sake of the next generation.

My parents are from simple family. We lived in the northern most Island of the Philippines (Itbayat, Batanes), just a few miles from Taiwan. My father was a farmer and my mother was a housewife. Living here is peaceful but quite harsh due to frequent typhoons. They're highschool graduates when they got married and raise us 6 siblings so I experience the harsh reality of not having family planning. Normally 6 children in a family is a common here that time. So thankfully, my parents pursue on sending us siblings to college because they believe that only education can be our inheritance to them. We became licensed professionals and only our youngest siblings was currently studying now. The oldest of us was the only one who had a child (one daughter) at age of 34.

A medical doctor in the Philippines earns about $1000 a month. Nurses often get a second job because their salary can't make ends meet. Many nurses go overseas to Europe or the US where they make enough money to support their families, including siblings and parents., then build themselves a nice home back in the Philippines for retirement. Their pensions or even Social Security are better than many full time jobs that are available. There are many students from India that come to study nursing or medicine in the Philippines. Some of them also end up in the US or Europe.

A funny story happened to my clan recently. My cousin, almost in her 30s, got pregnant. Instead of admonishing her, our relatives were ecstatic that she finally got a child. Unlike a decade or so ago when my other cousins got pregnant (or married early) after high school. I live in an urban area and even if some teens get pregnant early, most of them learn to stick to just one child. Those who delay marriage/pregancies also plan to have just one, maybe two max. Some are even vocal not having a child, to the amusement of their parents or grandparents

I'm from the Philippines and one of the reasons might be because employment rate is now recovering since 2021 and people are starting to rebuild their lives from the loss during pandemic. They are starting to get busy on their careers and that would mean less time to prioritize having children. Even most millennials and younger generations doesn't want to have kids yet but rather they choose to focus on their careers and grow their own finances first. But yeah, this is just based on my observations.

I suspect the Birth rate fell in the phillipines like it did everywhere else because of the corona lock downs. I never been in the Phillipines but my impression is that the woman there like having kids. That´s a total different mentality of woman in the western societies. Sure they don´t need 8 kids but at least 2 or 3 is a reasonable. Other countries in the are had similar problem. The other day i saw that Thailand in 2019 had 700k births and in 2021 droped to 500k Family planing? No Corona lockdown. The overcrowding in Manila is old problem and can only be fixed by moving people and businesses out of the city to newly built cities and using fast trains to commute. Capitalism is killing the population globally. Here in the Philippines, you need at least 1,000 pesos daily to live with dignity, at least 2,000 pesos daily to live somewhat comfortably. But the minimum wage in Manila is 537 pesos, in the provinces it's around 420-470 pesos per day. How can people add other mouths to feed if they can't make both ends meet? Prices of commodities and products keeps rising and going up, but salary levels are still on the level of salary rates during the early 2000s. Companies and corporations can actually increase the wages and salaries of their employees, but chose not to, because of greed. At the end of it, the human population will get closed to extinction because of the greed of the top socioeconomic classes in the world.

There are too many kids and they end up undereducated, malnourished and therefore underdeveloped mentally (not saying mentally retarded). Then they grow up and can vote, become police officers, decisions makers, etc. The only way to deal with these issues is to get population under control so each child can be given the proper resources to grow. As an aside, I had a vasectomy and my wife and I are childfree. Oh the Irony I like how the girl said that the west is having a demographic problem where there are too many old people to take care of. Like bruh, The Philippines is the same thing but in the opposite end, where there are too many children to take care of.

That pro-life girl should worry about other things before declining population. She keeps on complaining about the reproductive law but probably hasn't adopted a child. Disgusting mentality to want people to create more children when there is scarcity of resources.

@@sunnywintermorning1941 The problem is that it is really the middle class that is opting to have less kids while the poor are the ones making too much kids. Long term there will be less people but the majority may be the uneducated poor ones unless the government and culture itself makes adjustments

I am one of the contributors to this decline. Me and my partner decided not to have a 2nd child. This is a good decline because this will mean that less and less Filipino are going to become homeless. But the Government should keep an eye on the decline and make sure not to plummet even further.

It’s great news that the fertility rate in the Philippines plummeted!! PH is just too crowded now and it needs to slow down so that people can catch up with their basic needs like food, housing and education. The Filipinos are smart, hardworking and resilient. They must build on their strengths together as one nation.

Most educated millenials now prefer to live a single life without having children. Due to pressures of living they rather not bring a child in this world just to experience hardships they went through. Thats at least majority of sentiments of most of my career friends. The cost of living as a single person is already more bearing let alone having a child - it cost a lot.

The Philippines is on the right track of reducing or controlling the birth rate. It is may caused of good distribution of goods and services in our community. To deplete also the poverty and unemployment rate at the same time. ❤️🇵🇭

That mentality will kill the economy, who will contribute to the pension fund if we have more oldies than young ones? Each family should have at least two (2) kids to replace them or else the fund will be depleted or the remaining young population will be taxed a tantamount just to replenish the fund..
@kodomochan32
@kodomochan32 4 ай бұрын
@@markm_koko That’s the “oldies’” fault for ONLY relying on the state pension fund. The younger generation is tired of carrying the burden of others when WE can barely make ends meet. With a decrease in supply of labor (population decline), job vacancies would eventually ensue, and businesses will be propelled to pay more for employee retention. More purchasing power for everyone, and everyone is happy.

In reality Filipinos likes feels the pain of high inflations. Life is so hard to have many kids. Realization that either rich or poor family to plan have to 2kids are ideal to give better future. Family planning is just secondary for ordinary Filipinos.

It would be interesting if we also look at the social economic status at its population growth. Base on my observation those who are in the middle class and up usually have 1 to 3 children but those who are in the lower is still producing 5 or more and they are actually starting it early as young as 16.

Few of my female friends are married, most do not have a child yet. I married at 32 and gave birth at 34. We are planning to only have 2 children so that we can give them quality life and so that we can still enjoy the things that we love like travelling. Most Millennials, especially those who are working and do not want to experience poverty (again) will choose to only have 1-2 kids or none at all.

I grew up from lower income family. I hated my parents for being comfortable with daily wage living. My peers always tells my why I don't have a family yet. To bring a child into this world with barely scrapping by is very irresponsible. I want to have a family and children and have the means to live without worries. Everything is expensive nowadays. Wages have not risen and only a few people benefited from the rise of technologies.

Seeking jobs in philippines is one of the most challenging journey every ordinary filipino's met. Over Population contributed into that, too many competitors in few available jobs, This is why many job have ridiculously high requirements for employee, i even encounter some jobs hiring that want a college diploma even though it's only Hiring for a waiter in a restaurant.

Lol imagine getting a degree for engineering and ending up as a waiter. How are the uneducated people going to get a job if they require a degree for the most simple of tasks. Even saw one requiring a degree to be a cashier. A high school diploma should be sufficient for that.
