The Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip has been an awesome addition to my smart home and paired with the Hue Sync Box it has brought all my movies and shows to life. In this video I go over tips I've learned about the lightstrip, how to take control of the gradient with iConnectHue and show how other Hue users have lit the bottom of the TV with Hue Play bars.

You can’t wrap them onto the bottom unfortunately - they won’t function properly.

What streaming device is HuePlay compatible with? I tried Roku but Roku isn’t compatible with Spectrum anymore. I got an Apple TV device and it worked for a little while then I had issues with the hue play and they sent a replacement. I couldn’t get it to work though connected the same way. So I have to go back to the Roku and I get jerky video since Roku/Spectrum are no longer compatible. What are my choices to get everything to mesh together?

The last example is what I did with a mounted 75”. 5 play bars at the bottom, facing downward. It worked very well. If you do this, be sure to bring them high enough so that the light itself is not visible and it blends with the gradient strip. The example shows this perfectly. Helpful video.

Hey Justin, another great video, My family and I are starting a new room about where my garage was, this is something that my parents and I REALLY WANT for our new tv, it’s gonna be great. You are mentioning things that answer questions I had and are things that no one else is mentioning. I have a Sharp 85” TV and I run audio through through an amp and 7.1 surround. You are the only one that I have come across that mentions the sync box has to be the last source in line to the TV to get audio to work. That was the piece that made me jump to buy. Thank you.

Great video. I am thinking about getting (during Black Friday if there is such a thing for Hue) a Hue Sync Box orrrrr a Hue Light Strip for the back of my LG Oeld 65 in. I have 25 lights in my house now including the Play bars... seeing other people sets was great to see.

Let me start off by saying that I personally think you should have more solo dance parties in more of your videos. 😘 Seriously though, thank you for the helpful measurement information as well as the user videos; it never occurred to me to attach the bars to the bottom of our TV!!! Love these vids I've got gradient strip on a 65 inch with one play bar at the bottom. Question. We have a gradient strip that are 2metres long. Couldn't I use that for the bottom of the TV I can't see any videos about it. They are gradient so they should sync with your TV if you can put them on the entertainment area?

Hi Justin! Happy New Year to you! Just wanted to pick your brain? Took the plunge and bought the sync box with 2 play bars to sync in with a light strip. Connected all up and works well however every so often the screen blanks out and loses the picture and syncing. Have tried all the ports and still the same. Also wanted to know if you would know the answer to the following. I know the sync box cannot cope with a 3d signal via the sync box due to the way the signals are sent. But wonder if a video splitter that filtered out the 3d signal and fed back into the sync box would work with a direct video fed to the tv? If so would you know of any spitters that would perform? ttfn

Thoughts on if the tv is built into an entertainment center? That’s about 30” deep with maybe 2 inches room in between edge of TV and edge of entertainment center

It was also interesting how to implement full backlighting from four sides. But you have not considered the option of using two gradient lightstrips. If one lightstrip can cover only three sides, then maybe you can take the smallest one and use two of them and then they will be enough for all four sides of the TV. Is it possible? Will it work correctly in screen capture mode? (I have 65" LG OLED TV)

Justin, thanks to your videos, I decided to install Gradient ... and my advice to everyone ... don't mind the price ... because what this magic cable provides is something unique ... after seeing it live for the first time , there are no returns ... you won't be able to imagine watching TV without it ...

Hue sync works when it wants to. Mine has stopped working or synching to my TV. Love it when it worked. Customer service shipping me a new box. Hope it works.

How do you think the gradient light would fit on the back on an LG OLED TV? Ive noticed all of the TVs featured are LCD TVs that have pretty even backs, whereas the LG OLEDs have a super thin top half, with the bottom half of the back protruding out a good 3-4 inches.

Another way to improve the light is using diagonal mirror strips behind the TV to increase the light effects throughout the room.

Thanks for the great review, love it! I have a question: is it possible to use the 75" strip on a 65" TV? My concern is that, 75" strip will overhang the two sides of 65" TV, which will cause the color mismatch or not line up with the TV. I want 75" simply because I may upgrade my TV in the near future. Thank you.

As long as it fits the measurements I think you will be fine. The 65" wont look bad on a 75" TV either, so I think both could work for you.

@@TheHectorHuescaShow the ones it came with work great for me. When I went to reposition them the 3M sticky pads it came with didn’t work so well. I ordered what I thought would be the exact same ones on Amazon turned out to not work at all and where thin. I ended up using double sided foam tape

Unfortunately, no you can't wrap around the bottom, it wont sync correctly.

Hi, is there a way to make my gradient hue light from my back of the TV, do the rainbow effect? Just when you install those lights, they do a rainbow effect, but after that , there is no way to do the effect, you know gradient striplight has like 7-8 sections of lights, which turn on indepentedly, how can i do the rainbow effect with another app?

Do you think they’ll allow you to change brightness of different lights within the entertainment area soon? I’ve got 3 play bars at the bottom, plus the gradient. But the bottom is much brighter than the side and top. What do you reckon? Love your channel. From Tom, in England.

For now, I’d recommend placing the lights higher up on the back? How low are they currently? I’d say place them around where the others in the video did.

My Hue Gradient is reachable and added to Hue alp but it won't turn on at all. Not even normal light nlelt alone synced with Hue Sync. Do you thing the actual light is busted?

Do you think the 55" would work ok with the new 49" CX? How would the setup on the back work if the hue strip is too long? How does it know where the corners are

Very well could fit - there's wiggle room to adjust the lengths. The corners are baked into the device, it doesn't track where it is on the tv, but if it's installed evenly, it should look just fine.

You may be able to get away with the 55" on a 43" tv if you slighly cure the sides into the middle of the tv. You can't wrap it around the bottom - it wont sync correctly.

I have the same tv and just bought the sync box with a 75" gradient strip. I'm curious if you set anything like that up and what you used/ if everything fits.

@@thefodunk2 I ended up returning both the Sync box and the Gradient Strip. I bought the Hue Lightstrip Plus, and multiple extensions, so it would go around the whole TV (even the bottom). Back to your question, the 75" Gradient Lightstrip covers an 85" TV sufficiently, so you'll be ok with that.

I've got a 75" with three lightstrips covering left/center/right zones across the bottom. I am seriously considering an upgrade to an ultra short throw projector and either a 90" or 100" screen. I would love to see if others have already done this, and videos showing where/how they mounted the lights and how they look.

In entertainment setup be sure to tap on each light to set their height. You can choose below TV, TV height or ceiling.

Great video, though, I find on my 65” lg b8, the closer the tv is the wall, the easier it makes it to distinguish between colors when it’s running. I’m surprised you think it looks better the farther away from the wall (up to a certain distance of course).

@@Justin_tech agreed. I actually tried it out again a bit farther away from the wall and it looks better! Also, thanks for the iConnect tip. It’s really cool that it uses the gradient light as separate zones. Think give me hope a firmware update will come which will allow us to controls each zone through the hue app (fingers crossed). No you can’t wrap it around the bottom. It won’t sync properly.

Justin ...... So i can use this Ambilight set for my non Ambilight SAMSUNG Q950T TV yes? The main problem with this set is you have to sacrifice one of my 4x HDMI Terminals (all 4 already taken) yes? If the answer in both cases is a yes then i must find a solution to get my extre one more HDMI port for this set + don't even think about the 6th HDMI Terminal for SONY PST 5 (6 HDMI in total)

The light doesn’t need an hdmi port, the hue sync box does, but the sync box has 4 ports on it, so you’d have more than before. Or just as much if you decide to plug everything into it

It works with anything - it uses your phone's microphone, so play music anywhere and it will listen.

Justin, I have a question about the Phillips HUE gradient lights for behind a TV. My living room is situated in such a way that when you enter the room I see a side view of my TV. I’m worried that the side view of the HUE light strip will be visually unattractive and detract from the ambience of the room since everyone will see that view when entering the room. You know, kind of like seeing behind the scenes at Disneyland. What do you think? I don’t have an example to go look at.

Just to clear things out. If I want the gradient lightstrip to synchronize with whats happening on the TV I also have to buy the hdmi sync box. That means I have to pay an extra 200 dollars to make it work? Am I right?

Yes, unless you use the Hue Sync app on a Mac/PC and connect that to your TV

Hello Justin, i have a 75" tv but there isn't available. I asked Philips and basically they don't have a date to restock, so if i get a 65" lightstrip can it fit? Thank you!

Yes the 65 inch will look just fine compared to the 75 inch on our 85 inch at TV

Have you seen where the lights are no longer searchable in the Philips Hue app? Even new lights have to be added with the serial number. I even tried a new Hub and I got the same results. - Any suggestions? It started when I added the Philips TV light- after a few steps, I lost every light in my home. I had to remove every bulb and get the serial number, then rebuild every room. - So fustrating! I recently added a new Playbar and again - had to use the serial number. Any help would be greatly appriciated. - Martin

I have a question, would it be better to point the play lights down on the back of the tv? I could try myself but thought to ask as I am sure someone tried it 😄

It really depends on your setup and what looks best. It’s definitely easier to attach them aiming at the wall using the included mounts. I feel like it may look better facing the wall because it will diffuse the light better. Just make sure to test out the height before attaching. You don’t want them to outside the gradient strip, so they may need to go higher than expected.

Too bad they don't have the best specs in the TV otherwise I would have bought an Philip's too. Since TP vision took over they didn't make the best TVs anymore.
