Philips Hue Lux Starter Pack - Unboxing and Setup

I have officially started my journey on making our house a smart home by installing the Philips Hue Connected Smart LED Wireless Lighting System. I will walk you through the unboxing of the Lux Starter Pack, installation and configuration. Surprisingly the entire setup process was incredibly easy. They broke it down into three easy steps:
1. Screw in your bulbs & turn on your wall light switches
2. Plug in the hue bridge & connect to your wi-fi router
3. Download the app and follow instructions
There honestly wasn't much else to it!

What does the bridge do? Does it communicate directly with the bulbs, or does it go through the wifi router?

can u use the app to actual turn off these bulbs or just adjust them into dark? thanks

do you have to be on the same network as your user philips 's hue to use them?

Hi Jason, do you know if I can use the bridge of this starter kit with the colored bulbs? I guess I can save some $$ buying this starter kit and then adding a multicolor bulb.

Nathaly Yes, the bridge is the same for both the Lux and the colored bulbs starter kit. Once installed you can add any assortment of the hue bulbs you'd like to create your setup.

I bought a couple of iris bulbs.. I'm thinking buying just the gen 1 bridge. what is the difference vs the newer bridge? are they using the same app on the phone? also, can I control them remotely?

+1addictsad78 The new bridge has Apple HomeKit support, so you can use Siri to control your lights. Yes, both bridges use the same app, but Philips just released a 2.0 version App that is completely refreshed. Remote control does work if you're bridge is active and you're signed in to the app. You can also use timers and schedules.

+TekHeadz i just both the 2.0 bridge and we are totally hooked man.. kids love how i put the 2 iris as a side lamp. the problem is they are now sleeping in the bed with us lol and im doomed!!!

I couldn't not stop after you installed the controller into the wall, right above the light switches where the cables most probably are. then also the lan cable and power are gonna be literally above the light switches :D.

for these bulbs, can i use regular dimmer switch to control it? =)

+Elliott Ban - Unfortunately no. I don't believe any of the Hue bulbs work with a dimmer switch. The dimming function can only be controlled through the app or the Hue Tap Switch.

can i set auto timmer to turn bulbs on in the morning as wake up light? =D

+Elliott Ban - Hey Elliot! Yes you can. You would just use the app to setup alarms and/or timers. After everything has already been setup, I prefer to use the iConnectHue app to setup the timers to either turn off or on at certain times and even have them fade in or out. But all this can also be done with the standard Hue app.

You do know that the GE Link $15 bulbs pair perfectly to the hue hub.. they work great through it. I have 15 GE Links connected to mine along with 17 colored ones and devices.

Thanks for the tip Colin Sevier! I'll be getting some now to try out for myself. I see they also pair directly with the SmartThings Hub which will come in handy once I get one of their starter kits.

The hue hub pairs them faster and better than wink. You do need to reset the ge link first. On for 3 seconds off for 3 seconds 5 times

Can I install this on a ceiling fan and use my phone to dim the light on that device?

+SteveDawg OchoCinco - You would need to replace the bulbs in the ceiling fan fixture with the Hue bulbs and then you would be able to control and dim them via the app.

I got swindled and bought version 1 with the round station. I wanted it to link to my Alexa, but it cannot. So I guess I can be happy with manually turning light down and off. :^(

You can use Alexa with version 1, I have just set it up - just google it.

my house is on 240v so can i use these lights?

ELEGZER - While the US version will most likely work because the LED will gather no more voltage that is needed to work properly, the internal power supply is not meant to handle the 220-240 voltage and this will greatly decrease the lifespan of the bulb unit. It looks like Philips does make a 230v version of the Hue bulbs so you may want to start there. I don't know where you live but I did a search for Philips Hue UK and found their UK site did have the 230v versions of the bulbs and starter kits.

TekHeadz i searched on amazon of the us and i saw it says it is ''120v''... by the way i live in the middle east, and ''philips website'' dont have a store in the middle east.. so i think i buy the UK version

ELEGZER The Lux bulbs are white only. The "normal" hue bulbs can change colors. This is why the Lux are cheaper.

Is this true? The Hue Bridge must have a wired connection to the internet by way of an open Cat-5 port? It can't connect to my WiFi wirelessly? That's a deal killer.

Well, if you think about it. It makes sense. I think it's more of a way to manage the light bulbs. I don't know much about networking!

I'm with you. About to order them, but my router is in a non communal space - no good.
