Today I'm talking about the Philips Hue Play Hdmi Sync Box, I'll walk you through step by step how to setup the box with the app, your Tv, google assistant and your tv remote control. There's been a few new feature additions as of spring 2020 such as voice controls with google assistant and the ability to pair up the Philips Hue Play Hdmi Sync box with your tv remote control. I'll guide you on the initial setup, then walk you through the process of setting up an entertainment area. After that I've made a light demo to demonstrate the lights syncing with video on the tv. Next we will setup the Philips Hue Play Hdmi Sync Box with google assistant for voice controls, this takes a bit of working around as the app guidance isn't enough! Don't worry though because i tell you exactly what to do! Last but not least I'll guide you on how to set the Philips Hue Play Hdmi Sync box with your Tv remote. All in all I really love the box and all the new features that have just been updated. I've had it in my entertainment system for a year now and its worked flawless. What I meant is that it works with my chromecast because it is directly connected to the sync box but not when I use apps like Netflix on my tv

@Darius Steven Wallin - So for you to use apps like Netflix they must be run from a device connected through the sync box. Since the TV doesn’t pass through the box your smart apps can’t sync.

@@QasimZafar hello, i did everything exactly how you explained , but my hue box stop at this part: i managed to connect at wireless, after i need to confirm the connection and press power button (3 seconds) and release it when is green. Led turns red and stay like that, but i cannot connect to it. Tried multiple times, reset it, started again from scratch, no success. What to do anymore please?

@Robin van Droffelaar Yeah the google home install is weird because the instructions from philips weren’t working for me. So I kept playing around with it myself until I got it to work. I’m glad I helped man the voice controls are a major plus because I love google home.

To everyone watching, I’ve Pre ordered the new Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip for my TV. This light strip is multicolored instead of just single colored like the strip I have now. I have been buying two Philips Hue products every month. I now have 36 lights in my home and am finished purchasing smart lights. My next purchase will be the Sync Box. Been looking forward to this for a while. Wanted one but wanted to get all my lights first.

@@vindungen6759 Hi, yes you can buy two mount packs and also I’ve added a live chat option on the website so you should be able to message us directly and I’ll help you get your order setup. The mounts I’ve actually gotten updated so they have the adhesive backs built right in so much easier to apply. For the box you’ll be good with two mounts.

Thank you John I appreciate the feedback and you for watching! Yeah I have it disabled because the signal that it passes out just doesn’t seem the register. The box or what you’re watching thinks that you’re trying to record the content and that’s why the sync and even playback tends to stop entirely. This is something that Philips needs to address and solve with an update. Based on my knowledge and experience that’s all I know and I hope it helps!

Thanks for sharing 👍🏽 I might not be going to use this as these are really expensive here in India but however I enjoyed the way you guided through the setup process. By the way, are those light strips behind the tv also hue strips as well? And will this work without the bridge? ( The bridge is the most expensive item on this list ) Edit: I got answers after going through your other videos. 👍🏽

What did you use to attach the sync box to the wall? Looks very clever.

Erik Ence - Those are magnet mounts. I used super glue to attach them to the box. Glued two metal plates to the wall so they mount there and hold the box in place.

That’s awesome man, the box is definitely worth it I’ve had so much joy watching content and playing games on here. Hey what’s up buddy! Congratulations in advanced for such a successful video. I really like it helped tons of people. I have a little q… I recently bought my Samsung Q700 soundbar and plugged it directly to the tv but for some reason since day 1 I’ve been having a video “lag” when it comes to a black screen of 3-4 seconds before the video comes up. Any suggestion? I have the soundbar connected directly to the TV with HDMI eArc. My sync box currently has plugged in my Apple TV and PS5., sync box is connected directly to tv of course.

@@QasimZafar I actually had similar functionality years ago using a Java application on Windows. It represented the colours on your Windows screen. Had a small delay though. So I'm wondering how the Hue Sync Box will impress me, or not. Let's wait and see.

Wow that’s awesome man it definitely should the sync works well with the TV. You should also try out their desktop app, it’s free for Pc and Mac it’s great if you’ve got lights at your computer desk that are philips hue. Then you can have them sync with the desktop screen. Just google “hue sync desktop app”. That’s what I tried before actually getting the box 😁

@@QasimZafar Hey Qasim thanks for the follow up. Yes it's installed and working. Getting it to function with my Harmony hub/remote was tricky.. cause sometimes you just want to watch the news on TV without the light going nuts. But loving it so far. Was a bit disappointed by the fact the app stated that some of my bulbs weren't optimal color wise. Seeing they're 1st gen Hue bulbs. But I'm pleased with the results thus far. Was eyeing that gradient strip but won't be able to place it behind my projector screen. Hue team contacted me about it.

If you do your switching thorough an AVR for a surround/ATMOS system would you then plug the HDMI coming out of the AVR to any one of the HDMI inputs of the Hue Sync Box?

@Dave Klein - Yes that’s how you would do it but make sure you enable the ARC bypass.From the hue sync app open up the settings tab, then click on advanced settings and then turn on “enable arc bypass”. Let me know if this helps and also thanks for watching I really appreciate it 🙏🏽😊

Just make sure everything you’re trying to sync runs through the sync box. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

@@QasimZafar So far I have colored lights in my recessed ceiling, with an LED strip behind my tv, but i'll be getting the gradient strip soon and i'll move the LED strip to the cabinet underneath my wall mounted tv. I am finding that my ceiling lights are too distracting when watching a movie with the sync box. Still trying to find the right way to configure the lights to make it enjoyable. Guess that's part of the fun of setting up Hue lights. :)

@Mundashie - That’s awesome I also started with the standard strip and now I’ve got the gradient strip. I really love the effect of the gradient strip. I’ve got bulbs in my ceiling as well and you are right sometimes depending on what I’m watching it can be distracting so I always set the intensity to low. Yeah you’re right just playing around with the lights and syncing different things you’ll eventually find stuff that works best for your setup. I really love my Philips hue lights and I enjoy them very much 😊.

@Robin van Droffelaar Yeah google home is my favorite I use it for many things in my smart home. Yes Robin I’ve actually preordered the gradient lightstrip so as soon as it arrives I will do a video for everything related to that strip like I did for the sync box. @South Shore Saber Services - Hey thanks for writing in and yes that is a Sonos sound bar. There shouldn’t be issues nowadays when connecting sound bars. I’ve got mined connected straight to the TV via optical cable so I haven’t had issues. If you’re connecting one through hdmi arc then make sure arc bypass is enabled on the box and you should be fine. Hope this helps! Take care, be safe and thank you for watching 🙏🏽😊

Quick Question! As we have a smart TV and watch everything with the installed steaming apps, Can the lights still be used regardless if they arnt connected to the sync box? I understand the light wont reflect whats happening on screen but I still obviously would like them on rather it just being used for my games consoles

Thanks for the video. I've recently purchased this box, cause I have a bridge for my current lights, I wanted to upgrade. Quick question. I still have the old app for the first lights of the entertainment area, and now when I purchased this new box it made me download another app but an updated version, so basically I have two apps to control the same area. And they keep on messing up with each other and the lights dont work as well and or always turn off when my phone is not on. It's really weird. Do you think the old app is messing around with the new app?. Should I delete both apps and download them again for a full reset and see if that fixes it?. Thank you

How do tekmomo magnets do with vibration. I want to hang my sync box and atv to a wall; I have a subwoofer on my set up and was wondering if bass would cause magnets to fail.

@aure p - That won’t effect the magnets, I have a subwoofer sitting in the wall where I have my tv and I’ve not had any issues. The magnets are strong and also the adhesive on them is very strong. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi. This video helped me a lot thank you. Only problem is that my hdmi cable is connected from my tv to my denon system which connects to my external speakers. I tried disconnecting the hdmi from the tv but it disconnects the surround sound. Also my blue ray is connected to denon receiver also so how do I get the hue lights to work with blu ray player. Also my fire stick is not working since taking it out if my tv and connecting it to the hue sync box. HELP please !!! Do I need an hdmi coupler ???

Hi, this is an amazing how to, but I have a question. I have a new Samsung TV that has the feature to recognize the device on the HDMI port, so I can pair the TV remote to it in order to only use 1 remote for everything. Do you think this feature is still going to work, as the devices would regroup on 1 HDMI via the HUE box? Also would this allow the Apps that run on the TV directly (Tizen OS) like KZfaq, Amazon Prime, Disney+ etc. Thank you already

The built in apps on the TV will run but for you to sync you’ll have to use devices like the fire stick to pass through the box so the content can sync. Hope this helps!

Is there anyway you can sync them with applications within the tv? I have a Samsung tv and I watch KZfaq Netflix prime etc all with the tv applications without external sources.

@J.W. - Unfortunately not, the best option to having all those things sync is grabbing a fire stick and plugging it into the box. The content has to pass through the sync box for it to sync. Hope this helps and thank you for watching the video I really appreciate it! 🙏🏽😊

Hey thanks for watching! Unfortunately you need to connect it into a standard hdmi port not e-arc and also in order for apps to sync you will need an external device like a fire stick that’s connected to the box. Hope this helps!

Quick question. Does this Hue Box act as an HDMI splitter? For example, I plug my PS5 into it or nintendo switch (which is plugged to my tv) instead, I connect it to this device and it acts as a splitter?

@Kahn - Yeah pretty much, the hdmi input can be switched by a few different methods. One is voice controls, the other through the hue sync app and then also you can have the box detect when a device is on so it’ll switch to that device. Your hdmi input will always stay the same on the TV but the device that’s on will be the one powering through. Hope this helps, so let me know if you have any additional questions for me! Great video!!! From my understanding, the light only work if there is an input from the Sync box. So watching regular programs such as Disney/Netflix from your TV doesnt control the light?

Thank you for watching I appreciate it! Yes you need to have the inputs running through the box to have them sync. For example to sync with things like Disney plus if you have the app on an Apple TV or fire stick which is plugged into the box connected to the tv then the lights can sync.

I wish to purchase this sync box but I'm a little concerned because I've got all my inputs (Apple TV, cable box, Fire TV) going into the back of my AV ! I have to have it going in the back of the av, for me to able receive the best audio quality from that particular source! I was just wondering if it's there another way round it? If you were to click on the red Dragon twice you can see my setup and considering I've managed to get my TV plus furniture to have the FLOATING EFFECT all because of these smart lights, then this syncbox would certainly be the cherry on top! 😁 Not only have you got great presentation and editing skills but it's the way you explain things that does it for me! GOOD JOB

@Total Plonker - Checked out your setup you did a good job with it 👊🏽. Now you can add the hdmi sync box. All you’ve got to do is plug it up in between the AV and the TV. A couple people have done setups like that and it works great. Hope this helps and thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏽😊

Hey Adrian first of all thank you very much for watching and your feedback it really means a lot 🙏🏽. So the soundbar you’re gonna leave it as is connected straight to the TV. The PS4 (soon to be PS5 😊), the NVIDIA player and the TV box plug them in directly to the input ports on the sync box. Then just run one hdmi from the out port of the sync box to any hdmi in off the TV and you should be good to go 😊. Also you’re gonna love the setup as I really love my gradient lightstrip it’s a huge change from the previous strip and is just beautiful. Also if you play Cold War then we should play sometime. Where can I find the HDMI sync box?? I was going to get the entire kit yesterday at Best buy but I only found the gradient light strip 65-in and the hue bridge, the HDMI sync box seems to be out of stock everywhere everywhere

@Dakota Watson - Yeah this has actually been an on going issue since last year during Covid 😢. What I’d recommend is order it through Amazon because that way when it gets back in stock it’ll be shipped to you. I just checked and right now it’s expected to be delivered September 27th. @wayne robinson - Thank you so much for the feedback! That’s a good place to start with the lightstrip and bridge. Do remember that the bridge is good for pairing up to 50 hue devices. For syncing lights you will need to get the hdmi sync box and connect your media devices through the sync box’s ports. Got a few questions. Do you plug your eARC for soundbar hdmi into the sync box? Is the connecting output to tv hdmi included hdmi 2.1? It must have have hdmi 2.1 output capability even if they don’t include a hdmi cable?

@RC Aesthetics - first of all thank you for watching I really appreciate it! So for your first question you want to plug the soundbar directly to the TV Arc Hdmi instead of going through the box. It comes with an hdmi cable in the box. The box itself supports hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions 😊

@@QasimZafar thanks for the fast reply and info! So if I was to plug my hdmi2.1 from ps5 into the sync box, then from sync box to tv I wouldn’t receive 4K @120fps would I? That seems to be a major flaw considering the price point, especially as new TVs in 2020/21 can handle 4K @120. One last question as I won’t be plugging any HDMIs into the sync box due to my set up. I presume the sync box can sync from the TVs native smart apps such as Netflix and prime video?

@RC Aesthetics - You’re welcome I try my best to get back as soon as I can. Yes for PS5 you’d not be able to run 120fps in 4K cause the box only supports up to 60fps. Honestly for having I don’t really like using the sync, I find it to be distracting so for my Xbox I’ve just got it hooked up straight to the TV. Now for native smart tv apps they won’t be able to sync as the content needs to pass through the box. You’ll need to have an Apple TV or fire stick connected to the box for your content to sync.

@@QasimZafar these limitations are pretty crazy! It feels as if I am spending £230 on outdated hardware before I even buy the thing. They need to include hdmi 2.1 capabilities plus ability to sync with native smart apps on tv. I’ve just purchased the hue gradient light strip for £200 which may have to just set behind the tv with a static colour ☠️. Thanks again for the info

@RC Aesthetics - So honestly hdmi 2.1 isn’t that big of a deal as people make it out to be. In the case of gaming it’s useful because it’s required to pass 120fps over 4K but when it comes to TV content we watch it’s not gonna be useful for years to come. By then there will be a new sync box which will support it. A standard hdmi cable can still get 4K 60fps and also 8K at 30fps....so honestly other than gaming hdmi 2.1 isn’t that important for now. For working with native apps, TVs can’t output their content so that’s why you need something as cheap as a roku will even do the trick. The gradient strip is really sweet I’ve done a video on it. Honestly I’ve had the sync box for over a year now and all movies and shows I’ve watched have been so enjoyable. You should really get the box as by the time these resolutions get so high and we need 2.1 there will be an upgrade to the box. Hope this helps thanks again 😊

For the one connect box what you want to do is connect all the hdmi inputs to the sync box and then you’re going to run the cable out from box, into the in port of the one connect. @Lee Stringer - If you want to connect the multi switch hdmi with the one connect you have to plug it into one of the inputs of the connect box. That should work for you 😊

@Gerald Capo - Yes you will need a bridge and also yes to the music sync. You use the hue app to download a third party app that listens to your music and syncs your hue lights with it. What if my TV doesn't have a set-box? Just TV alone? Then all HDMI ports on the syncbox are empty, except the main one (TV port). Will that still work? Because I've been having trouble with it and my gradient light strip is not responding to anything on the TV. Do I need a second HDMI between the TV and the syncbox which connects to one of the syncbox ports 1-4?

@Akis M - You have to have an external device like an Apple TV or fire stick which runs through the sync box. Unfortunately having smart apps on the TV can’t sync since they’re not passing through the sync box.

@Akis M - That’s because your tv is not an input device on the sync box. The sync box is just passing a signal to your tv but there’s nothing connected to it for it to be able to sync lights.

Good demo. I recently purchased the Hue Sync Box and I connected to Deco mesh network. For few minutes it will work but after that it gets disconnected from the wifi network often. The Hue Sync app will show connecting and then it will connect and again it will disconnect from wifi. Have you faced this issue.

Hey brother there must be something w ring with the WiFi network. That’s all I can think of. I myself haven’t had any issue (I use the google wifi mesh system).

Super excited , so I got (four) E12 two for each of my ceiling left and right-(A19 )for my center light in between both ceiling fan- (6) play light bar for (1)- under my Sonos sound bar- (three) behind the Theater recliners- (two) beside the entertainment center- (one) light strip behind the tv- (one) sync box--(one )bridge-- I try to get what you mentioned on this video hopefully I didn’t miss anything, Q what I’ll do is post a video and if you can check it out (please) can you give me any suggestions if I should change something around. How many lights behind the tv do you recommend? I have Play Light Bars. I was thinking adding four. One for each side of the screen.

@Ron Sell - That would work well for sure but honestly I’d suggest instead of that you go for a lightstrip on the TV and then the play bars you can place in other areas of the room to get more of a dynamic effect. @Ron Sell - Yes that’s actually why I was asking because I was going to recommend that one as it’s much better because it displays multiple colors instead of just single colors like the original. In this video I had the original but I’ve upgraded it to the gradient one which I’ve also done a video on. Hey how does the sync box know how you installed the light strip. Like which side you started on so if there's red on the left and blue on the right on the tv it knows what part of the strip is there to do that certain color? If that makes sense

@Cody Lewis - Yeah in this video I’ve got the lightstrip plus and also two extensions to get a full wrap around effect. I’ve now upgraded to the gradient strip.

@@cody5o2 Yeah with the gradient one the multi colors are great but that empty spot is a downside. You’d have to add play bars to fill that empty area. If your TV is 65in then two extensions and the lightstrip plus will be good for ya. I initially bought three extensions but ended up not needing it.

great video. But a question. If i only connect my TV to the Box. Does IT still work for my PS5? I mean the ps5 is connected to the TV so i shouldnt need to connect PS to TV or?

Hi Sebastian, for the ps5 you’re gonna need to connect it to one of the inputs of the box then the box will go to the TV. For ps5 also go under the settings tab in hue sync app and make sure to have the arc bypass and the Dolby vision option...for some reason it work work with it otherwise.

Hey I have 2nd gen living colors and the HDMI Sync Box doesn’t show them as available lamps when I want to set them up. The lamps work fine with the Hue Bridge. Any ideas?

@@QasimZafar I think you are right that they are not compatible :-( PhilipsHue wrote to me on Twitter it’s because those lamps cannot create a white ambient light. I think the experience would be good enough just with colors… not sure.

@@QasimZafar No I'll return the HDMI Sync box. I would have to replace 4 living color lamps and maybe buy an led strip for the back of the TV. Overall a lot of money for a couple of hours TV watching per week.

Hi! I am stuck! I have the Hue Sync Box and Gradient Light Strip. I am not sure what to connect and where. Currently, I have an LG CX tv connected to my cable box and a Sonos Arc Soundbar which only has one HDMI port (eARC) which is connected to that same port in my TV. If I am hooking up my sync box now with the lightstrip, what gets connected where on tv and sync box? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

@Justin Benson - For all the things you mentioned I’d say you could keep the sound at connected to the TV or you could also run the hdmi cable through the sync box. Connect cable box to one of the In ports of the sync box Connect sound bar to tv or in port of sync box Then from the out port of the sync box run a hdmi to the hdmi input of your choice. Keep in mind if you chose to run the sound bar through the box then you’ll need to connect the out cable of the sync box to the arc port so it can pass the sound over. Also from the hue sync app go the settings tab and then under advanced sync settings make sure to turn on “enable arc bypass”. The box can’t sync any content that is playing directly on the TV so if you want Netflix to be able to be synced you’ll have to get a firestick etc. For the PlayStation or Xbox same thing as above with the cable box. You’ve got 4 ports on the box so I’d say hook up the sound bar directly to the TV and the rest of the stuff through the inputs of the box. If sohndbar is direct to TV then you can plug the box into any standard hdmi input on your TV. Hope this helps 😊.

If you’ve got a laptop then you don’t actually need a sync box all you need is hue lights and the hue sync desktop app that you can download here: www.philips-hue.com/en-us/explore-hue/propositions/entertainment/sync-with-pc Inside this app you’re just gonna make an entertainment area and setup your light and you can enjoy syncing content. It actually won’t you have to have an external device running through the box for it to be able to sync the content. I’ve used it with firestick, chromecast and Apple TV and all have worked well. Awesome video. Can you just help me with one thing that keeps confusing me? So in my room I have my gaming setup on one side of the room and across the room on the other side is where my tv is mounted on the wall. For my gaming setup I would get hue play doubles, desk lightstrip and two hue go lamps. For my TV I would get one gradient light strip to go behind the tv and one gradient light strip to go behind the tv counter to hit the wall for glow effect. And I would replace my normal bulbs with hue bulbs, and throw one gradient signe floor lamp in the corner of the room. What worries me is because my tv and my gaming setup are across each other, and I would like to sync all of them and reflect to what’s happening on the screen, how many hue bridges and sync boxes do I need? I know that if I get one sync box and connect my apple tv to it, it’s going to display colors based on what’s been reproduced on the tv through apple tv, but how do I get my hue plays and hue go’s in my gaming setup to react to what’s happening on the screen when I’m playing games or watching youtube on my pc? Or it’s not possible? And will I be able to connect so many devices to hue bridge and sync them all together? Thanks and sorry for such long message!

So for your setup you don’t need to have multiple bridges or hue sync boxes. Hue has a free desktop app which allows you to sync so if you’re gaming on a PC then you could have the sync work that way. For your tv setup you can use the hue sync box and have the lights sync that way. Now if your gaming setup uses a gaming system like Xbox or PlayStation then you’ll need to have separate sync boxes for each setup but you only need one bridge as a bridge is good enough to setup up to 50 devices.
