I am in uk and have had one of these (lefty) for 6yrs. I love it. Something you did not touch on is the weight balance when standing. I find it perfect. Downsides: I had to thin the nut width by about half and very carefully curve the string grooves toward the tuning pegs at the back of the nut to help tuning stability with the bigsby. Secondly, being hollow body it needs time to adjust to temp/hum changes in venues for about an hour to stabilise and this time reduces the older the strings so I keep strings changes to bare minimum. Having said that, I wouldn’t swap it for the world, it has genuine character. ;))

It plays absolutely beautiful played beautiful right out of the box. I’m very pleased with this instrument. I played guitar since 1974. This is one of the seven guitars I have I think that’s enough. I just recently bought a 12 string acoustic and a few years back. I bought a classic fender squire and put a new bridge and new machine heads on it and it plays beautiful too. I love mine. I got a 2020 MIK. Out of the box, it was pristine, and it plays better than my US-made guitars. The action was super low, fast neck (12" radius). It's my favorite guitar and cost a fraction of my US Tele/Strat/Les Paul. The pickup switch is a bit dodgy but it works. Great platform to replace with high-end TV Jones and electronics. And, of all my guitars this has been the most stable. You don't need to make any adjustments. Perhaps that's due to the 5 piece neck.

I'm an old (literally) Gretsch guy and have owned/own lots of them. I appreciate your review, but the title is "When The Mid Level Guitar Is Better Than The Pro Level" and I missed the explanation of that. If it's the number of top plies, I don't think that is a reasonable suggestion, a hollow body top is supposed to vibrate, the fewer plies the better. Better still is a hand cut spruce arch top, but Gretsch hasn't done that since the early 50's.

I have 3 new Electromatic 5420s, including the Sweetwater 59 version, and they are nice, but it is absolutely ridiculous to claim they are even close in quality to any of my proline MIJ Gretsch guitars. I have been A/B ing them all week, and it's not even close. Even people who don't play guitar notice a dramatic difference in the sound quality, and on the playing end, it's like a Honda civic against a Ferrari. I don't know why anyone would make this claim, and I seriously doubt you own a 6100 series guitar.

Hey Phil: small suggestion for you. When you point out things like "5 piece neck", consider taking a moment to mention the pros and cons of such a construction method. How do they differ from one piece necks? etc, etc, etc...Maybe even your own opinion. You already do that with other things.
@ibanmayo2
@ibanmayo2 Ай бұрын
The neck shown is similar in construction to the best classical guitars. And the scarf joint...Gibson should adopt that for their Les Paul necks Then no more horror broken neck videos on youtube. I know the pros...best construction for structural integrity. What are the cons?
@joesatchton212
@joesatchton212 Ай бұрын
@@ibanmayo2 So...what you're saying is that in terms of structural integrity, multiple piece necks ALWAYS are superior to one piece necks? Is that correct? Has that been verified by builders? Clearly, even to my ignorant brain, a one piece neck is less expensive, less complex and less time consuming to build versus multiple piece necks. Right? Also, from your logic, 3 piece necks are less durable than 5 piece necks, but 7 piece necks are best of all? Cheers
@ironmikezero
@ironmikezero Ай бұрын
@@joesatchton212 You can get into quite a bit of discussion about multiple piece vs single piece necks; unfortunately, it tends to devolve into wood species arguments. The general consensus (as I understand it) is that careful selection of grain direction and subsequent placement when glued enhances inherent stability in multi-piece necks to a considerable degree over single-piece necks. It does take more time and impacts costs.
@joesatchton212
@joesatchton212 Ай бұрын
@@ironmikezero Thanks man. Totally understand the sadly toxic discussions about gear in our universe. So dumb and pointless. Appreciate your feedback for sure! I am no luthier but I am familiar with discussions that indicate necks that have been glued for repairs [a la Gibson breaks] are supposed to result in a stronger final product as the modern ,proper glues used can create stronger bonds than even a single piece of wood can achieve. To my original comment, I would love to hear Phil's thoughts on this matter, with his deep experience as a repair guy. Cheers and thanks again.

My first Gretsch was a Japanese Lefty Country Gent 2. It’s a lovely high end guitar, but I’ve had to become a better player to really know how to use it. It has a very smooth Bigsby and subtle pickups. I bought a Lefty Korean G5420T on clearance and was really impressed by the build quality. Absolutely. Take a nice mid level guitar, add a really good set up and just a little bit of time tweaking it, and it can be very hard to tell the difference between it and a guitar costing twice as much. Ask any touring musician that doesn’t want to take their expensive stuff on the road.

New to the channel. I just purchased an eastman t486. I wonted a high value mid price range guitar. I looked at the electromatic guitar at 800, and the next level was almost triple. I'm now wondering if I made a mistake. I guess I'll have some ides when it arrives. That iconic gretch sound is definitely amazing 👏

Gretsch is currently one of the best value for a quality guitar . Doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

Great guitar! I have one in white/gold trim which looks like a budget Falcon, it's MIK. Everything about it is very good, I love the neck. A roller bridge for that Bigsby will provide much improved tuning stability. All Bigsby guitars should have a roller if you ask me.

I installed a roller bridge on my Gretsch and do NOT like it - the strings pop out unless played VERY lightly

I had the same MIK white/gold, and never had any stability issues with the stock bridge even with heavy Bigsby use.

I’ve had a G2655T Streamliner for a few years, the build quality is flawless. Plays, looks and sounds great, though the Broadtron pickups are a little dark and not particularly ‘Gretsch-like’. I’d like to check out a Jet or Penguin

Eastman had this a few years ago. Their AR605/610ce ‘jazz’ hollowbody guitars, instead of being all maple like the 8xx and 9xx series, had a spruce top with mahogany back and sides. And sounded better acoustically, while also sounding better thru the floating pickup. All for roughly half the price of the maple guitars.

Lol Phil does the screen color inversion for the glove test. Man that is a nice guitar though. I've been playing clean tones lately. The Supro Tremolo pedal really sounds great!
