You're very good at instruction! I love that you don't simply say "here, do this and do it this way", but you give us the reason why. A lot of folks doing videos don't fully teach. I've found that stuff sinks into my brain a hell of a lot faster when I understand the "why" part! I appreciate ya buddy!

Here's an easy, safe and possibly free option I have used. Works quite well! I'm sure I'm not the only one to come up with it. Just need a cooler and an empty milk jug. Simply put your jars inside the cooler with a milk jug full of warm tap water. I find all you need to do is partially empty the jug of water, empty about 1/3-1/2 the jug, and top off with hot tap water. I do this twice a day, morning and evening. Generally shoot for about 85- 90 degree jug of water for my set up. I''m easily able to maintain temp in the cooler in mid 70s this way. It takes a tiny bit of playing around to dial it in and see what it takes to maintain your temps but it's super easy, works well and no electricity or fire hazard.

Great video, always appreciate your DIY approach. I just went through a whole process of upgrading my shed for the winter, where I have my gourmet tent set up. I insulated everything, and upgraded the gauge of my extension to be able to run a small oil heater on a low setting. In retrospect, a couple hundred watt reptile heating bulb would have been the way to go. Then maybe building an "insulation box" around the tent using those foam insulation blocks. Regardless it seems to have worked well for lion's mane: I can monitor the temps on an inkbird temp controller wirelessly, and my fruiting times have only decreased by maybe 30%. Not too bad. Keep your babies warm folks!

Instead of using electricy one can can also use a big bottle of warm tap water to heat up some kind of insulated box, also the best and easiest insulated box is a scrap/not working small freezer, look around on local ads, its often free.

I stayed off grid cabin with ambient temperature 35-40⁰f. I used a Rubber Hot water bottle. I would fill it halfway so it's flexible enough to wrap-around my grain jar and then I'd wrap a towel or hoodie around that during the day. At night I would put the grain jar in bed under the covers with me and cuddle up with it.

@diy_mushroomguy
@diy_mushroomguy 9 ай бұрын
Heat mats should never be sandwiched between anything. You should always lay them on whatever a shelf or whatever you're using and then have something just floating above it and whatever you're heating sitting on that. I found this out the hard way with keeping reptiles in tubs and have melted holes in the plastic totes before. So you're paranoia is on point.
@thombaz
@thombaz 9 ай бұрын
@@diy_mushroomguy I have a good quality low voltage (12v) heating mat, but still I would not trust it with my knowlege I have now. When I was a kid I got a lot of low voltage stuff from chine, but actually lower voltage comes with higher amp. for the same wattage. They maybe better for hobby electroctronic but there is a fire risk too. Always use the highest quality stuff you can gets your hands on. As I am a long-time aquarist too I have seen those shitty (or sometimes even high quality) heathers fail. Do not let them dry out as they can overhet, burn and sometimes they can crack their glass tube specially if they are not fully submerged and the glass have high temp diff. areas. Always use proper wiring and safety devices, GFCI, smoke alarm ect, you can even have those fire extinguisher balls that some people put in growtent that suposted to burst when there is a fire. Safety num1 and don't sue me bro.

Before this video came out, I was already doing something similar to this. I got two free frosting buckets from a local bakery (they throw them away). Cleaned the buckets. Put some bricks in the bottom, with small jars filled with water to provide a platform, then an old fish tank heater I had that my gf had thrown away. I put the heater at the bottom next to the bricks. Added water. Then floated a 2nd smaller bucket for grains. Works well but the 2nd bucket gets wet from humidity. So I put all grain jars in zip lock bags, mostly sealed. Put a 2nd bucket on top, and then covered with a towel. And empty the top bags of the small amount of water every so often. My best advice is to just copy DIY videos for incubating eggs but on a larger scale. But you can do all this for free or less than $20 if you are smart. Don't buy bubble wrap. Rent-a-centers and stores that sell large TV's they put on display have loads of large sheets bubble wrap they throw out. You can ask them to set it aside or just dumpster dive. Same with large blue foam inserts. Those junk couches that people toss out can also be torn apart for the couch cushions which are large squares of foam. Pet stores that supply fish receive fish in metallic space-blanket type insulator bubble wrap. They come in long 4-5' feet steps about 8" wide. In short, watch for items that might arrive in materials you need. Fish must be kept alive from cold in shipment. You must be kept alive too. So it's a good insulator. Contact shipping facilities. FEDEX and UPS freight facilities endlessly get stuff like that from people that open up crates on site.

I got some heat mats coming in the post. I've heard people say that houses in Australia don't retain much heat compared to houses built elsewhere like America and Europe. Ironically I've heard people say it's actually colder here inside a house during the winter, than it is elsewhere in countries where it gets much colder outside. I intend to use the heat mats for fruiting as well as incubating because we don't have thermostats or radiators built into our houses. Only reverse cycle AC. I tried running a space heater in winter last year and it cost a fortune in power bills so I'm hoping the heat mats are more economical.

re: Gas exchange... I've started looking at tubs and jars that are kept upright as carbon dioxide traps - although maybe that's something else there are consumer-grade sensors for. And yes, there are other simple fixes to boost gas exchange - like adding more holes to the base of a tub and lightly wadding some cotton or something into the hole... Do you have issues with warm water growing algae and bacteria? What do you think of salting the water or using something like mineral oil instead of water?

Im testing your broke boi tek brownrice no PC method. Its in quart jars and I even extended the time to 2 hours but I always get a spot or 4 of blueish green. Totally cleaned SAB, sterilized tools the whole series of steps as clean as I can do it. Obviously all the molds in the rice arent killed. I can make a water chamber up to 6 inches deep to keep the steam bath going for about 6 hours. Is there a length of time limit before the rice is no longer viable as a growth medium? Also if the top of your monotub is nice and moist as well as the walls why does the center feel like a piece of dried out particle board? This is weeks after loading the mono tub. The sides are growing very well but 2 inches it the growth stops. Thanks for your videos, you are a wealth of knowledge even to an old farmer.

Personally I have an Amazon basics heater and a Bluetooth thermometer and I have the thermometer send me notifications every time the temps go below 73 or above 83 and the heater is connected to a smart outlet that I can turn on/off remotely

Thank you for your content! I don't think your heating mat is a fire hazard, I think I have the same one, 18 watts, very little for the surface area. I have a 40w one that definitely can become a fire hazard when folded or insulated. I'll touch several spots on any heating mat to check how hot it gets in my setup, mostly the answer is lukewarm. Otherwise a cheap pwm dimmer will reduce heat output. Anyway, I'd even put these buckets on sheets of styrofoam to insulate from below.

I been growing in my closet , and I use heat lamps for reptiles ! The ceramic ones that don't emit any light jist heat. Hang it in my closet, keeps it warm. The lower of the closet is around 65 but that's okay.

I get over those temps, and that's in the coast of norway. Electricity has never been as expensive, but that can't stop us from growing :p Just keep your tub in the same room you have the most heat in and leave it. Might get slower grow rate like i did

How about during the spring and summer months? Opposite do you suggest an AC and dehydrator for a state like NY.

If you were to use yeast, would you put it in the pressure canner or add it to the fruit chamber later on?

Wonder if we can have holes in the (sides of) top tub, in your second method to automatically bring in some humidity from the water below.
