Ask yourself this: "Does TNG with more believable 'real people' and all the character faults that entails sound interesting?" It's 'eh', but it's enjoyable and sometimes smart. Definitely closer to Trek than the crap in CBS. In some ways it's more polished than the first season of TNG, but I think Fox demanded it be funny because McFarlane is doing it and that holds the show back. It is thoughtful about issues with the distance of a fantasy environment. It also has lots of predictable writing, bad acting, out of place pop culture references, and lame humor.
