The reason this happens is because Minecraft doesn't know how to generate -1 mipmaps, so you've just deleted the textures for every mipmapped object in the game. Mob textures aren't affected by this.

As someone who’s a mipmap level, the fact that he brought up the ▯▯▯▯▯▯ really brings the memory’s back. truly a moment 😔😔

I actually encountered that soft lock, while playing modded Minecraft, I forget the exact combination, but a certain combination of mods caused my screen to do exactly what that was doing

The Minecraft creatures are the only things that can actually understand their environment, humans, can’t since we need depth to understand it

fun fact: If a wandering trader llama is aggressive towards you and you switch to spectator mode, the llama can still see you and will continue to look/spit at you.

That reloading loop is also what happens with a few mods, if you use them on the wrong version.

Mipmaps are not the rendering of things in the distance, that would be the drawing distance or LODs. Mip maps are a technique to smooth textures that appear smaller than their full size on your screen, so, if you have a 32*32 texture, but is far enough or just in a weird angle according to your point of view, instead of the full size texture, you would see a more simplified 16*16, 8*8, 4*4 or even 2*2 texture instead, this can then be re-sharpened using Anisotropic filtering, but this is a lesson for another day. I use quite a bit of mods on Minecraft so the rectangles are actually a common occurrence, not the infinite reload loop. But the pure black blocks is something I've encountered a few times.

2:00 The negative mipmap glitch depends on what GPU you have and what operating system you use. It basicaly comes down to how your graphics driver handles this call to opengl. Some will likely flatout crash instead.

What's weird, at least for me, is that the game logo, which is ostensibly made of a single texture (split down the middle so a certain easter egg works), also generates rectangles as if it were just a text string... Unless, of course, this is Phoenix being Phoenix, and I got whooshed...

I remember the first time I've downloaded a pirate version of the game and all the letters were rectangles as well. So, after many tries, I made a map showing what buttons I had to click in order to create a new world

For some extra info, by setting the brightness to Inf, -Inf or NaN, it causes it to make everything black, text, blocks, mob head, everything!

Mipmapping is where textures that are further away get rendered in less quality. 2 mipmap levels means that there are 16x16, 8x8, and 4x4 versions of each texture that the game blends between based on distance. 0 levels means there's only a 16x16 texture, which makes things look worse. Funnily enough, I don't know why you loaded into the world successfully. Looking at the game's source code, you should have crashed the moment it tried to generate mipmaps for -1 levels. (Or maybe it was changed in 1.19.3; I'm looking at the 1.19.2 source.) Technical: it creates an array with length `levels + 1` (which should create an array of length 0, in this context), and assigns the base texture to index 0. This should crash the game, since there is no index 0 in this context, since the array has a length of 0.

this would genuinely be a pretty cool survival challenge to watch someone should do this it could be easily turned into a texture pack(i think) if someone just recolored things

i actually did this once and i learned the hard way. i had to go into the gam's files to revert this and fix my game.

Speaking of the boxes, Minecraft's /tellraw command seems to only recognise Unicode characters with up to four digits in the code point. So something like \u130b8 becomes \u130b 8 (well, without the space, but Minecraft doesn't recognise the whole code point so it renders it as the four digit character and the literal remaining number). And if pasted directly, it becomes a box, even in the Unicode font. Also sorry Egyptologists and Unicode heads, I wanted to joke with friends on our server 🤷‍♂️ 😁

I'm always amused that at least within Google, these rectangle characters are called "Tofu". This resulted in the font "Noto Sans" that attempts to have a symbol representing every character, so there are, as the name suggests, no more tofu in the font.

in 1.15.2 and maybe a few later versions getting night vision lvl 255 and blindness lvl 255 will have a simular effect: Your screen goes completely black as well as all text gets colored black(ALL text, including chat, button names, splash texts and menu labels) and the effect for the text even reaches the main menu screen and every text for your worlds, servers and others. It goes away once you join a world, in which you dont have these two same potion effects active.

Mipmaps aren't exactly "what gets rendered in the distance" instead it's how many detail levels of textures get generated. If you use the full resolution texture at every distance it will lead to weird artefacts in the distance. To combat that the game creates lower resolution versions of textures to use in the distance. Usually 0 or 1 means only the initial full res texture and every step higher than that usually generates one texture at half the vertical resolution of the original. This also means that when it's lower than 0 the main full res texture probably also doesn't get generated leading to a completely empty/black texture like we see here.

The only way to unlock is to set your mip map level in the options txt back to 1 or whatever positive number you want.

I'm not sure if it is just with me using Fabric with some other mods (mainly Sodium, Iris and Indium with no shaders active), but setting mipmaps to -1 during daytime ends up with a normal looking 1x1 texture pack, basically making everything a single color, for example dirt brown, water blue and grass green

Legend says that if you count all instances of the rectangles you'll find out that it'll be the same amount of the infinite dimensions from that one april fools update.

I wonder if mips -2 is just reading bad memory locations. Might be worth messing with different ansitropic filtering options when in mipmap -1 May not do anything since there is no mip levels, or may display all kinds of misplaced textures.

My friend had a similar glitch but in this case all his textures were swapping constantly, ex; no texture was the right one and every few minutes every texture would change, he also dealt with the text not loading in the same way that it is here. We tried to find a fix but it seemed like there wasn't one. If someone knows what's going on, if you have the time, reply with the problem because currently it seems there is barely any coverage online for it.

My create fabric modpack at one point broke for no discernable reason doing something identical to this. I dont have the files anymore, so i will never know why that happened. It's a sad end to a great multiplayer world.
