My grandparent's lived in Arizona and Ive known the zoo for decades, and you are spot on about the lions. It's probably a 20+yr old enclosure and some older enclosures need more space. I'm happy that you love the natural enclosures for local animals. While you can get very close to most animals, the zoo like making sure it's the animal's decision. So, since Coyotes are skittish, staff manage the plants to make sure that they can hide and dig little pits to cool down in. It's why some animals have two areas or large enclosures elongating away. The other little walk in place, across from the lizards, in the Arizona Trail houses bats and other nocturnal creatures. There's also a nursery for when the zoo animals have babies.

Growing up in Phoenix, I went here a lot. Took field trips including an overnight there. Good times.

We had a Great Time @ Phoenix Zoo. Animals were active, happy and awake. Plenty of space , good margaritas too. Definitely will be back .

Zoo’s are animal cruelty. It’s ashamed that we accept what animal goes through by getting trapped in confined spaces. They deserve freedom. The Lion sleep because they’re meant to hunt. Let them free. No disrespect to the video editor.
