Are you struggling with teaching phonological awareness to older students? In this video, I review three phonemic awareness or phonological awareness curriculums and how they are working with my high school students; Heggerty Bridge the Gap, Kilpatrick Equipped for Reading Success, and the Intensive Phonological Awareness Program. If you have students struggling with phonemic awareness such as blending, deleting/adding, or segmenting sounds in words then these resources might help your struggling older readers. Often times once a student reaches 3rd grade through high school, students are not explicitly taught phonemic awareness skills. The curriculum out there is often not suitable for the older student.

About Me: I am a high school special education teacher at a cyber charter school. This means we are all virtual, all the time! I work in what would be considered a life skills or self-contained program in a typical brick and mortar school. This means my students are working several grade levels below their peers. I mainly teach reading classes and the students rotate through several teachers in our department for other subjects. A lot of my students and their families have chosen virtual learning due to bullying at their local school or a high number of medical and therapy appointments that make attendance at a typical school difficult. I also teach English as a Second Language online to kids in China through several different companies. I can do this before/after school and on the weekends. I have the BEST students in the world :)

This video was extremely helpful!! I am a reading specialist for middle schoolers, but prior to this I was a reading specialist for elementary level students. I switched from elementary to middle school in February of 2021. The last few months I have found the exact same thing, that most phonemic awareness resources feel very juvenile, and does not work well with my older students. I have experience with Kilpatrick but I have been contemplating buying the Heggerty book as well, and this really helped!! I love that it has anchor lessons, which I have felt for a while that was what Kilpatrick is missing. Thank you!

One of the things I mentioned in this video was the lack of “anchor lessons” in the Kilpatrick program. Someone just shared with me this great resource that provides those lessons for the Kilpatrick book! Check them out here: Cook and Siracusano (2020), Multisensory Activities for Developing Phonological/Phonemic Awareness and Proficiency. produced this. This was extremely helpful. I homeschool my 1st grader and we use Heggerty Primary and IPA. I've been torn between Bridge the Gap and Kilpatrick. IPA is a lot with just one kiddo and you're totally right about the preparation. If I was a teacher or if I had another kiddo to use it with it wouldn't bother me as much. I just hate doing all that prep work each week and I'm learning that I'm going to have to cut it down to about half. It's just too much for one kid.

I’m glad it was helpful! Doing all of that prep for one kiddo would definitely be time consuming!

We homeschool and have been using Kilpatrick for this school year with my Dyslexic daughter. Definitely feel like it is really user friendly.

Hi, thanks for this video. I found it very useful - especially when you explained how the books worked and also the pros and cons of each. Do either of these books have a section of syllables and how to teach them? Thank you. Oh and I am writing from New Zealand.

Thank you for the video. Can you explain more about the anchor lessons? I'm using Kilpatrick with my 8yo son. We are on Multisyllabic/Applied 1(p.156) and he is struggling with those. He did well with the previous levels. I think I need the anchor lessons you mentioned. Is that in Heggerty K-2 material or in the Heggerty BTG book? Or are the anchor lessons something I can find on the Heggerty KZfaq videos?

I also love Kilpatrick but am in need of those anchor lessons. I teach 1-1 virtually ages up to 14. Would you say that Bridge the Gap and Kilpatrick would work well together? Can I get anchor lessons from Bridge and the use the 1-minute drill for practice? Thanks for your input!

Which would you recommend for an adult learner with dyslexia? She's currently reading at a 2nd, sometimes 3rd grade level. I'm leaning towards Bridge the Gap.

Do you know of any source to add scaffolding to Kilpatricks activities? He has STMemory deficits and struggles with them. Do you think Heggerty better? Do you teach virtually? If so we’d be interested-for our 10 yr old son or consult to us as parents. Thank you!

I am a K-5 reading teacher. I use KP for 2nd-5th grade students for PA. I use the Heggerty Primary PA (yellow) book with my 1st graders. I've been debating on the Intensive PA book because some of them still struggle. Thoughts?

If you are willing to put in the time printing and cutting out all the pieces, I think it would be great for K-5 grade levels! It would definitely take more time that KP if you are trying to do it with fidelity. However, it would also be easy to supplement KP by picking and choosing games and activities you think would work well for your students. I think it’s only around $25 on Amazon too, so it’s not horribly expensive!

Hi, thank you for your video review! Between KP and Heggerty would you recommend for a homeschool family? I have a 3rd and 5th grader who would benefit with filling in the gaps in terms of their phonological awareness. We tried more formal curriculums when they were younger, but they grew bored and just wanted to read good books. This has been wonderful, but they have gaps. I'd love to find a tool to bridge these gaps.

This is late. I am a reading specialist and a 3rd grade teacher. Heggerty Bridge the Gap is great and super easy to jump in. You can really target specific skills and it moves quickly. It focuses on phonemic manipulation. I have seen growth with kids after using this for about 9 weeks.
