Are you struggling with teaching reading in special education? I teach reading to high school students and have found there to be very little information out there for special education teachers working with more moderate to severe disabilities. Teaching reading to older students already has its own unique challenges! The science of reading is all the rage these days, but our students with more significant disabilities are being left out of the conversation. We are failing our special education students when it comes to reading instruction. I am on a journey to teach reading to my high school students with disabilities. I hope you will join me in investigating the best practices for our students with intellectual disabilities, autism, and other cognitive delays to ensure they leave school as readers.

About Me: I am a high school special education teacher at a cyber charter school. This means we are all virtual, all the time! I work in what would be considered a life skills or self-contained program in a typical brick and mortar school. This means my students are working several grade levels below their peers. I mainly teach reading classes and the students rotate through several teachers in our department for other subjects. A lot of my students and their families have chosen virtual learning due to bullying at their local school or a high number of medical and therapy appointments that make attendance at a typical school difficult. I also teach English as a Second Language online to kids in China through several different companies. I can do this before/after school and on the weekends. I have the BEST students in the world :)

Comprehensive Literacy For All has been a game-changer for me, but I am still loving this new emphasis on decoding!

In my program they emphasize the 5 pillars of reading...phonological awareness being the #1. Game changer, however no matter what children are all different

It’s nice to watch a video about special educational needs from someone who gets it. I’m currently doing my teacher training and I’m the only one who comes from an SEN background (I’ve been a SEN TA for 6 years). I’ve found that none of the modules cover SEN or even mention it. I questioned my tutors about this and they said ‘oh we cover it in the inclusion module’ - not very inclusive if you ask me 😂

This is what I needed to hear! We’ve tried the whack a mole curriculum of piecing things together and it isn’t working. This year we are trying a systematic phonics program. How do you determine pacing?

Hey there! Thank heavens I found your channel before purchasing edmark for over 600 bucks for my nonverbal son. I am running into a wall with his school not having a separate curriculum for students who utilize AAC and cannot speak. We started having him match cvc at words with pictures. The sad part was i had to suggest it. I will be following this conversation. I am desperate to teach my 6 year old how to read.

Hey! I’m going to be specifically talking about non verbal students in this series. There are a few programs I have come across that are designed to work with your child’s AAC device. Accessible Literacy Learning and AAC Language Lab are two I have been looking at that look promising. I would push to have them purchase something like this for his device!

The value of phonics teaching to special needs students is under-researched. So are we putting forward a research proposal, or are we putting forward our bias in the hope of attracting private customers with the same bias?

I am currently in an Ed.D. program and this is one of the topics I am considering for my research! Right now I've just been compiling and reading through the bit of research that is out there. The research that is available does seem to point to the need to provide an explicit phonics based approach for our students with intellectual disabilities, but there are some definite gaps in the research which would be interesting to explore. In the mean time, I'm hoping to connect with more teachers who are exploring other ways of teaching reading in their classrooms then the typical programs being used with this group of students and sharing what has been working for my students as well.

So glad to be part of this dialogue! I have been trying different approaches to teaching reading in my high school and now 3rd-5th self-contained class for six years now.
