I only recently got into the hobby. Mainly because my 5 year old daughter started showing a huge interest in tarantulas. We got a female GBB. Sold as a 3cm body and her legs span by my rough measurements is between 2.5 and 3 inches. She is gorgeous and very bold in terms of exploring. I unfortunately had to re house her within a week due to ants in a cork bark piece. Took her a week or so to start showing she was happy again but she has since webbed it to the hilt. Ps Dave just seems a top bloke

@@daveslittlebeastiesI think the map is A ok. I'm mostly noticing it at around 31:07. Of course you'll never be rid of it all. I dont really want to nitpick, but as long as ya replied, the table itself is a mite reflective. More of an eggshell sheen instead of a full flat. Since the camera angle is pointed downwards alot of the time, the table can be seen. Probably is light from the ceiling area. Of course you could always tone down how well you clean your glass! Haha

These spiders are so lucky to have you to look after them, Dave! You are exceptional with your care and knowledge on these guys and Gals. I have never had a spider/tarantula as a pet and have always been afraid of them, but after watching your videos, I have a new found respect for them. I used to not think twice about killing the occasional spider I would find in my house. But now, I always relocate them outside instead. Really enjoy this very interesting channel - I think people who are scared of spiders should watch this because just watching them go about their lives and the way you handle them would 'de-mystify' them for people. I was never comfortable with spiders but in my years as an illustrator I had to draw a white-tailed spider from a live specimen, and after working with it for three days I felt much more comfortable with spiders.

Can confirm. T’s have never triggered my arachnophobia the way other spiders do, and I used to care for one when I did wildlife rehab/rescue, but I’ve been watching Dave and Camera Lady for about two months now and have gone from “keep it over there” to actively wanting a tarantula myself. I’m completely over fear of them and find them so interesting! …I don’t see myself ever getting into “spiders with the pointy legs,” but I do professional work with them, and Dave has certainly made a huge impression in that work. (And speaking of, happy holidays and merry Christmas if you celebrate, Dave and Camera Lady. Wishing you nothing but the best, and hope you both know how much you are valued in this weird corner of the internet. ❤️)

Just on a quick note: Sabah - where the name of this spidey comes from - is a Malaysian state. Not part of Indonesia. My girlfriend who's from there steamed up upon hearing "Indonesia" in that case. Again, Dave, simply lovely! I swear you can take a bit of this and that and voila`! A rain forest appears. If you have a garden in your back yard I'm certain it's amazingly beautiful as well! Bravo! And the spider meanders into her new home. Camera Lady I bet is exhausted after shifting around to get the right angle to best show your work and the spider. Update: my t.albopilosum mum is doing well, rolling her egg sac around. My g.pulchripes has webbed a small area and I think she's getting ready to molt. Tomorrow I receive two new T's a 3 inch unsexed aphonapelma calchodes and a 1 inch sling grammastola coloratovillosus. I've started getting the items I need to put together an incubator out of an old ten gallon aquarium if this egg sac turns out to be viable. Prepare for the worst and you'll have no surprises. Hope you both have a lovely day and have a cuppa lemon grass tea for me!

Dave, I love your videos but have always wondered something regarding your care of the spiders. I’d like to preface how you’re obviously very well versed in the husbandry of these creatures and your specimens are lively as could be. However, that being said, I’ve always wondered why you put such an emphasis on humidity. Nearly every other tarantula Internet personality I’ve watched has said to ignore humidity numbers. They say what’s important is to provide an appropriate amount of water to replicate their natural habitat; how the water needs to be in contact with the substrate (substrate meaning everything in the enclosure i.e the soil, cork bark, plants, glass/acrylic sides and decorations). My care has erred on this side until now without any problems and my tarantulas seeming as healthy as yours. But, I, like many, have nowhere near the experience you do. I’ve heard some go as far to say humidity does little to nothing for the spiders and can create a stagnant environment without enough airflow. Which is true, of course, but also isn’t a problem if you have proper ventilation. I’ll use Poecilotheria as an example. It’s known they’re adaptable and can be kept in a dry cage so long as their water dish is always full, since they don’t come from *too* damp of an environment. Ornithoctoninae spiders, on the other hand, come from quite a damp environment and so take in more water than a large majority of others, especially the fossorials. Now, fossorial nature exhibited in Ornithoctoninae arboreals was once thought to be an artifact of captivity, but it’s been considered how maybe this is them displaying their behavior to excavate rotting wood in the retreats of their tree hollows. Even 20 meters up in a tree their actual home is probably quite moist. Anyways, what I’m getting at is a spider such as Phormingochilus sp. sabah blue, even with a full water dish, might not prefer an overall ‘dry’ enclosure. I’m not sure if I explained myself as well as I would’ve liked, but hopefully you understood. Cheers!
@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carson, the point I keep referring to with humidity is you want it in the air! not from wet surroundings just spraying does not produce long term humidity so is of very little use, when we look at sub tropical spiders and any of those from humid areas its important to understand there environment and what they require from it, we will never replicate the wild but what we can do is provide a close substitute I gage my work on how my spiders respond to the way I keep them and change if nessassary , I do keep my spiders very different to how a lot of care sheets would tell you to and I have learnt from many years of trial and error, you said in your statement that many internet people say to ignore the humidity numbers whats important is to provide an appropriate amount of water to replicate there natural habitat? I disagree with that advice whole heartedly and think this is where most people go wrong becouse they are just providing a wet enclosure which is not a humid environment , the numbers are only a guide to which. we can monitor what we do, humidity is a very miss understood concept becouse we cannot see it but it is important and I hope the quality and condition of my spiders backs my theories up 👍
@StickyRig
@StickyRig 3 жыл бұрын
@@daveslittlebeasties but isn’t humidity a result of the moisture from the environment or am I not understanding? In the video you said having a layer of water in the bottom with the clay pellets is how you get your bioactive setups to the correct humidity. Also, sorry for the confusion if you thought I was implying I sprayed my enclosures with every watering for the spiders. I usually only overflow the water dish slightly. If the soil looks to drying out and it’s one of my say, Ornithoctoninae, I’ll water it almost like a plant with a stream, of course being careful not to over do it. Rarely do I actually spray. If I do it will be for an arboreal that I feel may be coming up on a molt or just needs a little extra hydration. This way at night I can see them drinking the droplets off the sides of the enclosure. I know I certainly don’t fully understand humidity, but as I said in my original comment I’ve heard some say humidity is almost just unattainable water for spiders. I don’t believe this to be true, I’m positive it plays a role in their health. But, I believe having the physical water there is also as important. I suppose my original comment wasn’t meant to ask why do you focus on humidity, rather why don’t you allow for a more damp environment to truly come as close as possible to replicating where some of them are endemic to. Either way, thanks for the reply, Dave. You’re already a legend!
@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties 3 жыл бұрын
@@StickyRig yes I see I too overflow there water dishes and I try and keep them full at all times , in a bio active set up like I use the humidity is coming from the moisture in the soil and any surplus water in clay ball area due to evaporation up through the layers and this also provides damp areas especially behind the bark hides and lower areas of the enclosure the plants also help lock in that humidity too, I have found given the choice pokies will always choose a dry hide over a damp one, if your method of keeping is working with good results then I would stick with it only changing if your finding it lacking in any way 👍

I've watched a few videos from different people but yours are definitely the best 🥉 You don't talk too much and what you do say is necessary and very interesting . You're a Topman. A big Hello! to your camera woman. 👍😊 PS what title would you have ? a spider lover?

She is a stunner! I'm going to take a screenshot of the opening frame of her. Beautiful blues and markings. Dave, you have an incredible flair for designing these enclosures. I have a great love of gardening, landscaping and really appreciate your work. You could easily design arboretum and such. I wish I had known what I loved when I was young and had gone to school for things like botany/biology etc. I'd love working in a botanical garden, or creating arboretum s and landscapes. I truly admire your craft. If anyone told me a year ago that I'd be sitting captivated watching tarantulas for hours on end I would have told them they were insane. I thought Camera Lady was making an appearance. Perhaps she was in one of the reflections. I can't catch the screenshot. Its a flash before the name of the channel appears😔

People probably used all mesh enclosures that’s why their T’s got damages I had that issue with a crested gecko someone gave me.. mesh tops should be fine

Hello there! Beautifull spider and awesome enclosure, nicely set up. It would be nice to include names of the plants in the description:) (preferably latin ones for foreigners such as me so we can google and find some for ourselves), Best regards!
