Finally bought a head to replace the dedicated Gitzo head that came with my Gitzo GK1580QR tripod. My selection? The Really Right Stuff BH-30 Pro. I unbox it here, and find a small (I hope) problem.

Interesting video, Mike. Yes, that Gitzo tripod (legs only) looks quite nice. I am also into smaller, lightweight, yet robust travel tripods, and like another poster said, I have the MeFOTO GlobeTrotter, which though excellent, is a bit large and heavy for travel with my mirrorless Fujifilm X-System. So, after much research, I found the Oben AT-3536 tripod with BC-217T ball head, that is perfect for my travel requirements! The rig weighs about 3.8 lbs, has a folded length of 15.2", and has a solid ball head with a load capacity of 20 lbs, plus a friction control integrated with the main ball head control knob. Of course, it has a separate pan control, and a monopod conversion option, and retractable spikes as well. I find it extremely well-made, and quite solid for a mirrorless, as well as most any DSLR/lens combo. HIghly recommended!

Been using a BH-55 for a couple of years now after a Gitzo head threads cracked and my D800 and 14-24 hit the concrete from shoulder height. You will not be disappointed.

Good to know. I can feel the quality of the head even if I can't use it right this second. I've found a part at B&H that should get me going. Unfortunately, adds $35 to the overall cost :-\.

Hey Mike, I own the exact same tripod (without the ballhead, however). You should be able to unscrew that bolt and put it back in place for use with the RRS. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the RRS, I'm currently using an Acratech setup (their panoramic head and leveling base), but looking for something more compact for traveling. Cheers.

Oh, I was hoping to hear from someone with the same tripod! I didn't explain it well in the video, but out in the garage I was able to remove the black "collar" from the bottom of the head. This gave me good wrench access to the nut-like portion of the bolt. I tried pretty hard (and unsuccessfully) to unscrew the bolt, then backed off because I didn't want to force anything. I'm curious about your tripod. Once the head is off, mine looks kind of "unfinished" and doesn't have much surface area, since the black collar that has the set screw in it comes off with the head (you can see this in the video). Does the top of your tripod essentially still have that collar in place, or something like it?

My tripod is similar, without a head mounted, it's just a flat disc, about 2.5 inches in diameter, about 1/2 inch tall (sorry, it's not right in front of me for accurate measurements). It has very little surface area, I believe it's that way by design.

If you end up having issues with that head on those legs, honestly take a look at the MeFOTO Carbon Fiber GlobeTrotter. I've had mine for 3 years and it's been wonderful for traveling and everything else. The head is no RRS, but honestly, it's great and does all the things you'd want. The legs are really nice too, for the money I think it's killer! The most weight I've had on it is the a pro body with 70-200 on top of a RRS Multi-Row Pano head and it handled the weight no problem! www.mefoto.com/products/globetrotter.aspx

GameBrosTMT I consider it to sound good. I don't listen to my desktop system as critically as I listen to my "real" stereo, though.
