In this video I head to the picturesque village of Boscastle in Cornwall to capture some images of the distinctive S-shaped harbour. I also talk a little bit about filters and what I like about the Kase filter system which I'm now using.

Hi Julian. Playing catch up after being off-line (by choice ;)) for a few days. Great to see you back vlogging - hope all's good at your end.You certainly picked a cracking location for your "comeback" and the weather gods were smiling on you as well ! Love the images and definitely prefer the portrait aspect. Interesting to see you've now made the switch to Kase (seem to remember you'd discussed this in an earlier vlog). They certainly look a quality product. Especially like the CPL set up. Welcome back Julian and thanks for sharing !

Excellent video as always Julian and very relevent for me - visiting Cornwall for a holiday soon myself & have recently switched to Kase Filters - I find the polariser so handy, can keep it on the holder with Red cap fitted all day if sunny and so easy to fit/remove, no more trying to remove screw in filters for filter rings ;) The filters like you say just seem to keep clean much easier & any rain drops wipe off with no scratching too. They're certainly not cheap but worth it in the long run I think.

Great video mate, packed full of stuff! Really interested in the Kase system. It will be at the top of my list when it comes to change, though that won't be for a little while. Loved all of the shots but #2 was my favourite. I favour the composition with Meachard in it and feel it needs a bit of space around it. Regardless of that all three shots we excellent and I am already looking forward to seeing which one you print.

I'm pretty sure I've got a vertical image with Meachard in it somewhere in my library. The reason I like #1 best is the light. I love a bit of soft light from setting sun. Great video, fantastic location and impossible to choose the "winner" from three great shots. I've been in Boscastle this April and shot the same scene (though on a rainy & overcast day, so no such great colours). Actually I shot from the path below and after watching your video I regret that I didn't go up to your spot. That's much better and gives it a more balanced composition. I really love the colours of the 1st picture most but prefer the landscape orientation and composition of the 2nd over the 1st. Not sure about the 3rd one, maybe I'd gone for a 1:1 ratio, don't know ... I'd vote for the 2nd image though I probably would have zoomed in just a little bit more as I find the distortion at 19mm of the harbour at the left side slightly distracting. But a great shot anyway. Thanks for sharing!
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marc. Well, that walk up to the top of Penally hill is enough to put most people off, so I don't blame you for not bothering. Maybe next time, it is worth the effort. Thanks for all your thoughts on the photographs. They all have certain qualities that I like. I agree about the distortion, but I've been using that lens so long now that I've gotten so used to the look that I sometimes forget about it. But yeah, I reckon at 20-21mm, I could have still have the boats and island in the frame. That's the good thing about visiting locations on a regular basis, you can go to the same spot and fine tune your compositions each visit. But, I'll probably get a rainy overcast day next time like you had on your last visit! Thanks for watching! 👍😀

1 by quite a big margin; but I tend to shoot landscapes in portrait (if that makes sense). Boscastle, and the surrounding area, is a lovely place to shoot. The rings set in the floor of the harbour walkway make a great shot and I've always thought the headland on the right looks like a dragon's head sleeping. A really nice simple talk through of the process and your thoughts.

A sunset in Boscastle, well that would be nice. Three times I have visited Boscastle, 3 times I have been met with grey cloud and nothingness, which is really frustrating as it is such a beautiful place. Not sure about jumping ship on the filter front, I have too much money invested in Lee Filters system, but I have to agree that Kase appears to be more user friendly especially the polariser which is a huge let down in the Lee system. Picture number 1 would be my choice, it gets everything in that you need and has great colours. Great video, will visit Boscastle again when next down in Cornwall, maybe this autumn.

What a beautiful evening in Cornwall. I really like the way you talked the viewer through the process of taking the shot. That S curve harbour was made for photos! I’ll say image 1 is my fave. I recently retired my Lee system in favor of Kase and I’m very happy with it. The magnetic polariser justifies the purchase on its own-simply brilliant design. One question: since you used the six stop Nd on some of your shots did you have any issues with blurring of those boats? I can’t tell from watching on my tiny phone screen but I would expect a bit of movement. Just curious how you dealt with it. Cheers, Jeff
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, always a pleasure to read a comment from you. It was a really calm night when I took those images, so believe it or not, the boats didn't move at all. And if they had, I would have just accepted that. I know some people might have taken two shots and maybe done some photoshop magic, but I personally wouldn't have worried about. So how did I deal with it? I didn't. I ignored it! lol You can see full size copies of the images on my blog. 👍

I have just gone to Kase and have the 6 & 10 stop. What grads do you recommend would it be the 0.6 sort and hard ?? I have the CPL I am not sure it’s as good as the Lee one but it works
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul. which grads depends on your cameras dynamic range and what you are shooting. e.g. When I had a D80 (many moons ago), I had use for a 0.3 grad, but now with the D850, I can, in most circumstances only really need a 0.6. I use a hard grad for a lot of coastal scenes, but a medium grad is also useful. There isn't really a one size fits all answer. 😀

Thanks for providing the link in your other video! Helpful to see these. I just picked up the Canon RF 14-35mm, so interested in knowing if you get vignetting when using the polarizer, ND grad and 10 stop ND -“at the same time. I’d prefer the drop in ND filters, but saw other Kase reviews with the magnetic ND filters. Did you explore that option? How do you find the neutrality of the Kase ND 6 and 10 stop filters compared to Lee? Is cleaning a lot easier than the Lee IR ND? Are you able to use your older Lee ND grads? Do you find the Kase Glass ND better than the Lee Resin filters? How do they compare durability wise? Lastly, I’m looking at one of the K9 sets, did you buy one of the sets? I couldn’t find one with lower ND grad strengths (ie 2 stops is usually best for lakes with reflections, to avoid the background being darker than the reflection in the lake), but seems they only offer the 3 amd 4 stops. Sorry fir all the questions. Last two days I’ve been considering switching from Lee (after over 20 years), for Kase or Nisi.
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 2 жыл бұрын
Happy to help....or make your purchasing decision harder...not sure which lol Anyway, let me see if I can answer your questions. Magnetic filters - for me, not an option as I still use grads. Fine if you just use a polariser and NDs, but a square filter is the only option if you want to use ND grads. ND grads - these are better than the Lee. Optically as good, but much easier to keep clean, and keep clear of water drops. Using your Lee on Kase System - yes, all your Lee grads should work just fine. The only exception is the Stoppers which have those foam gaskets. They can be a bit of a squeeze but people make them work. Durability - no complaints there. Kits - I'm pretty sure they didn't have the big kits they have now when I got mine, just the holder and CPL, so I would have got my grads individually. You can buy 2 stop grads individually. Hope that helps...oh, this is what I bought originally - kasefilters.com/product/kase-k9-kit-100mm-holder-with-magnetic-slim-polarising-filter/ref/JulianB/?campaign=K9Direct

Thanks Allan. It was a combination of things. Firstly, they came highly recommended by a friend of mine, and I liked what I saw in the other YT reviews I watched. With the polarizer now being so close to the front element there's absolutely no vignetting whatsoever and I love the wheel function and that its magnetic. No more struggling to screw it in while in the field. Still using the Hitech filters but they are quite badly scratched now so I'll be switching over those at some point.

Hey thanks for watching. I cam from the Lee system, and vignetting wasn't too bad. Only a problem around 16-17mm. I used to have two filter holders though. One always had the polariser attached as I wanted to avoid the very issue you pointed out about struggling to screw the dam thing on and off all the time. The Kase system is far superior in that respect. Can't get much easier than magnetic. 👍😀

Do you need a polariser for each of your lenses as they will have different filter thread sizes?
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, no, you only need to get the one polariser for all your lenses. You buy inexpensive adaptor rings for each of your lenses (based on the filter thread size), and the polariser & filter holder attach to those. 👍

Number 2 for me. As said below, the rocks on the vertical shots to my eye also take too much away from the background and hinder the visual progression through the scene. That said, this may be more apparent because I’m viewing it on a small screen and it may well look great printed large! In all honesty, all three are really nice but I have a preference for number 2! Always enjoy your films 👍

Always great to read a comment from you Simon! 👍 I agree with the points raised about image 1, so I've edited it again and posted it up on Instagram. I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts are now that I've reduced the exposure a little in those bright foreground areas. Did you make it to Boscastle on your recent trip? Thanks for watching mate. 😀👍

I’ll bob over and have a look later on a bigger monitor! For whatever reason, I was really lazy in Cornwall! A combination of family being present and those early rises coupled with late returns put me off. To be honest, I was ready for slowing down and really enjoyed a relaxing break for once

Donn't blame you mate. I'm going on a family holiday soon and I learnt a long time ago that landscape photography and family holidays don't mix. And like you, sometimes you just need to put the camera down and pick up a glass of wine instead! 🍷👍😀

Hi Julian. I’d be interested to know how you get in with Kase filters on cold winter mornings. My Lee filters tend to fog up a lot when the resin filters get into cold air even when the air is dry and crisp. Apparently it’s a Lee thing. How’s Kase?

Hi Andrew, good question. I used my Kase Filters on a few very cold and frosty mornings in Skye recently and had no issues. However, I don't really remember having that problem with the Lee Filters either. Could be that I just haven't had either in the right environmental conditions to experience that issue?

one other question for you - is the solid 6 and 10 stop ND filters you showed come in different sizes? I found some locally that are 100x100mm, not the 100x150mm you showed. Not sure if if the ones i saw are the same, or if there are differences in quality (like Lee regular big/little stopper and IR ND)
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 2 жыл бұрын
All Kase NDs are of the same optical quality. Unlike the Lee system the Kase ND filters are the same size as the grads and not square. So if you are buying the Kase 100mm system filters, all the filters measure 100mm (wide) and 150mm (long).

Hi thanks again for the reply! I did find out that Kase actually sells two master sets (at least in Canada and USA), that gave the same identical types of filters and case. The difference is that the set that has the slim 1.1mm size slim filters (depth), have the oversized 100x150mm size ND filters (just like the ND grads). This set is around $100USD more expensive. The master set with the normal 2mm deep filters (like Thoth Lee), have the ND filters in the 100x100mm size, but the ND grads we are still the usual 100x150mm. All filters in this set are the regular 2mm depth. Do you know if your filters are the 2mm depth, or the super slim 1.1mm? I’m just wondering which would be stronger?
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 2 жыл бұрын
@@kss9931 No worries. I wouldn't worry about strength because all Kase filters are pretty robust and will survive the odd drop. :-)

Hi Julian, I am considering of buying the Kase Filter System but not sure which pack to go for Landscape Photography? Entry Level, High End or Master? Which filters (2,6 or 10 stop etc) are most used based on your experience?
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shabeed, thanks for watching. It's hard to recommend which filters to buy because everyone shoots different landscapes in different ways. However, in general terms I would probably start with the Entry Level kit and if budget allows get a 2 stop medium grad (hard grad if you shoot a lot of seascapes). If you are just starting out with filters, that will be plenty to get you started. :-)

Julian Baird Photography thanks for your prompt response. I live around Canadian Rockies so mostly it’s mountain and lakes, so i guess I won’t be needing hard graduated nd filter! Thanks 🙏
@jbairdexp
@jbairdexp 4 жыл бұрын
No worries, happy to help. Correct, for mountains you won't want hard edge grads, you'll want soft. This is why it is hard sometimes to make recommendations because we all shoot "different" landscapes. :-) Stay safe and have a good day :-)

Hey Lee, great to see a comment from you. It's a cracking location. I'd also try and headland on the opposite side (south). I haven't shot there yet, but it might be worth investigating. Hope you're not there this weekend.....it's a little windy in Cornwall this weekend!!!

@@jbairdexp Thank you mate :) Yeah heading down Sunday. Looking at the weather across the country Cornwall seemed to have the least cloud coverage. As you know these weather forecasts are not always accurate hehe. I will take a look from the Southside if i get time :) Thanks again for the inspiration and If i manage to get a video out of the trip i will be sure to credit you for the inspiration/location and give link to your channel. Happy shooting fella :)
