Photographing moths and using a Moth Trap

After trying out the Samyang 100mm macro with my Sony A6400, with continued hot weather in the UK I dust off my trusty old moth trap and see what I can entice into the trap. I also look an alternative method you can use if you don't have a trap as well as showing you some of the techniques I use to capture stunning images of these beautiful yet often overlooked insects.

Some great ideas to encourage the moths there. I had no idea they would be so passive, allowing you to pick them up etc. Good tips and you got some fantastic shots. Love the Elephant Hawk shot. 👍

Cheers Adrian, it was a little too hot over here for us so it was nice to do some photography without leaving the garden! (anything over 20 degrees and its too warm for me😂) Thanks for watching mate👍

I think your unknown might be a common rustic agg. But not sure. Like you, I've got a trap that I've not used much for some years. The problem is that our neighbours have extended their house upwards and any light in my garden is liable to keep them awake at night. So I've bought a black-light bulb. It's not as good as the MV but still attracts moths.

Thanks Kenneth, I think you could be right. I have numerous field guides but still find identification difficult for anything obvious! It can be difficult in more built up areas. I back onto fields so its not an issue. i must say I like the idea of a portable system that I can take to the local woods and set up overnight as it would be interesting to see what variation there is in species. Maybe a project for the future👍

Quick tip if you have frisky moths that won't stay still you can put them in a container in a fridge for a while and the cool temperature forces them to go still sleep. It doesn't harm them

A useful tip Colm. I tend to try and image mine first thing in the morning when they are less active anyway. For the others they are normally away as I lift the lid off and give me no chance to catch them! Thanks for watching👍

Just goes to show Scott with a bit of investment in a trap and a few basic props you can get some nice images if you are a person who is limited for time or not able to travel. Very much into invert. macro photography so nice to see a fresh subject. 👍

Great video Scott, i had no idea that the UK had that many different species of moth. The trap looks a great idea and will have to try out the white sheet method. 👍🏻

Brilliant video as usual mate. I must admit I was a bit reluctant to watch this one, because in normal circumstances I cannot stand moths! But I made myself watch, and actually thoroughly enjoyed it! In actually fact I thought some of the moths were quite cute!

Hi Ash, moths are very surprising in there wide range of colour, size etc. Really very underrated compared to butterflies but so much more interesting in my opinion. Always great to get he moth trap out in the summer, you never know what your going to get!! Thanks for watching👍

Very interesting Scott. I saw a moth trap used on Brownsea Island a couple of years ago and was amazed at the variety and beauty of the moths they caught. I did consider getting a moth trap but was put off by the price. Great to see how it works for you with a cheaper trap. You got some great shots there. I think I will give this a go when I have some spare time.

Cheers Paul, it's a useful edition when the weather is so hot the other wildlife is under cover and the birds are still tatty after the breeding season. Of course now I've made the video it's chucking it down!!😂👍

Thanks for the great technique information!! If you don't mind me asking, who is the manufacturer and where did you get the red base plate extension on your a6400?

Hello Jack, thanks for watching the video. The plate is an L-bracket that is designed to let you turn the camera in portrait mode while leaving the ball head in position. I got mine from an ebay listing but there are loads of alternatives. Hopefully this ebay item link will help. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164773968548

No, there isn't, I just didn't see the need for it in this video. If you see some of my later macro photography videos I do use a flash and diffuser👍Thanks for watching!
