This is my latest beginners guide video on how you can learn all about moth identification and moth anatomy in an easy-to-understand way which will help you to improve your moth identification skills.
By Martyn Priestley Wildlife field officer Low Moor & Oakenshaw conservation group.
Filmed in my urban wildlife garden where I have recorded 431 different moth species to date. You will learn how important it is to know the anatomy of a moth with simple illustrations. I then move on to learning key features of say a moth's forewing which will help you get the correct identification of your moth.
Many key features are discussed like the size of a moth, oval and kidney marks...Where are they? and what are Cross lines?. Also useful tips on how to measure a moths wing to aid identification.
I explain when moth trapping how you can pot a small moth which is resting in a hard to see part of your moth trap so you can identify the moth. How to use a moth potting tube and many other moth identification tips.
Also how important it is to learn about the different moth families.
I discuss how useful it is when trying to identify a moth, from your moth field guide what is your moth's flight season and habitat for a correct identification.
Why not think about rewilding your garden for the benefit of moths and butterflies with a small or large native wildflower meadow. Dig a wildlife pond to encourage frogs, newts and toads to breed.
Your wildlife pond you will also attract dragonflies, even moths and an array of pond creatures.
