Welcome to this week's video in which I travel to RSPB Bempton Cliffs on the Yorkshire coast to capture some images of the many seabirds that are resident at this time of the year. It was far harder than I was expecting but still great fun!!
I hope that you enjoy the video!

hi Gary, thanks for the vid. Really nice shots of the birds. Me and the Mrs love that place. Visiting end of June for the puffins. We had a boat trip last time we were there (2019) and managed great shots from less than 50 feet from the birds in the water and diving birds too. Nice mix of video and stills.

I loved the shot of the gannet. It looked like Big Bird from Sesame Street. There were a pair of white headed sea eagles on a local loch last year, didn't see them unfortunately, even though I spent a whole day there on my lonesome last summer. Finger's crossed they're back this year but they'll probably be scared off by the general public wandering around with phones playing some tuneless drivel whilst they're enjoying a day of haphazardly dropping their non-recyclables as they go. (if I get any grumpier I'll have to start reading The Daily Express :-)

I wish Bempton was closer, it's a long drive for me or I would have gone at some point - the gannets would be great to see in those big numbers for sure. Your are right about the bif thing, a fast lens is your friend, 70-200 f2.8 I reckon if they are that close. I tried for years to get puffins in flight at Skomer but its bloody hard! Great variety of birds on view there Gaz & a good day out you had by the looks. Loved the 2nd gannett in flight shot at 6:54. I know you like to mix up you b -roll with some colour grading but just my opinion, it didn't look or feel right for me - just a personal opinion of course. atb Al
@GaryNormanPhoto
@GaryNormanPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you a little secret about the b-roll... I was using a osmo pocket for the first time (which has gone back!) and I set the white balance way too cool, so I had to be a bit creative hence the grading, although personally I did quite like it :-)

Great video, the key for Bempton is to get there early, to avoid the hoards of people later on, and you have the viewing platforms to yourself! Also try out Yorkshire Coast Nature’s website for gannet diving photography! I’ve booked a 2 dive 6 hour boat trip for Aug. WELL WORTH IT

@@GaryNormanPhoto I do Bempton every year it’s only 1 and a 1/2 hours away from me (Thirsk) so I get there just after sunrise. As for the gannet diving ive done that for the last 3 years and Steve Race who runs it is just great, not an (in yer face I know better photographer!) any questions he is willing to try and answer! You will come away wanting to do another I guarantee. And one more tip (from me!!😆) try Bempton when it’s breezy and the gannets hover just above the cliff tops and it will be easier for the shots you want. 😁

Thanks very much Michael, I used a Sony a7R3 with a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary - Canon mount with a MC-11 adapter. I would say that you can now buy a 150-600 that is a native Sony mount but when I purchased the original lens this wasn't an option, hence the adapter.

Another lovely set of images (1:43, 4:12 & 7:43), I could almost smell the fishy guano, 🤢. I'm with Alan, personally the skies were too teal (not a Teal, as in the duck), but I don't vlog so what do I know🙂. So my question for you would be, firstly on a serious note, Kit Kat or Curly-Wurly? Secondly, now that locations are opening back up what, if any, effects is the ability to travel having on your well being? Thirdly, now you are out and about, where do you feel your next areas of growth will be in photography terms?

@GaryNormanPhoto
@GaryNormanPhoto Жыл бұрын
At Bempton, I'd say that you could definitely get some decent images with a 300mm equivalent lens. I seem to remember that at times 600mm was too much. I would however say that the extra zoom of a 600mm lens really does come in handy on many occasions when shooting wildlife.

It all depends on the light and the movement. Some of the static birds were shot at 1/400, but if they're in flight then yes as high as you can get away with really.
