We all want great pictures of our children. And what could be better than capturing their personality, humour, fun and playfulness. I have two step sons, three step daughters and one step grand daughter (How can I be that old??!!) all of whom I love dearly.
I don't know about you but I always hated my school portraits which were always a bit stuffy and posed. Thankfully they're getting a lot more relaxed these days. So how do you go about capturing amazing images of your children?
Well the place to begin is to get them into a environment where they're safe and happy to explore their surroundings. This will keep them engaged and the delight they feel will come through in your images. But before you begin shooting - take a moment to set up your camera so you're ready and don't miss things as they happen because you're fiddling with shutter speeds or something.
In this video we'll take you through which lens to use to concentrate on the child which gives you a more environmental portraiture look - or to show them enjoying their surroundings for a more street / documentary look. We're going to show you how to be sure you have your focal lengths, apertures and ISOs ready before you begin.
If you need a little help with these camera controls please come see us at www.photography.... Otherwise sit back and join me as I talk you through setting up your camera ready to photograph your children.
In Photographing Your Children part 2 we'll do the shoot and show you the pictures.

Agreed with most of the comments here, Mr Mike Brown is probably the best person to host videos on KZfaq. Everything he does is very informative and he doesn't have an annoying voice. So happy i stumbled upon him whilst typing "Street Photography"

Children can be a tricky issue, unless they are your own or have permission. That's one of the reasons I like going to re-enactment events. We go to the Tudor events they hold at kentwell Hall in Suffolk, where you can take photos of everyone without having to ask.

Hi - I carry a big bag because I may need a different lens for a particular shot but I won't know which one until the opportunity presents itself. I don't use one camera body either. I have two bodies with a different lens on each. This is maybe a bit extreme for most people, but because I do it for a living I don't want to risk missing a great image whilst changing lenses. - Mike

Hi Madison. Yes there are three I think. here's a link to one /watch?v=fsSpoKdcFws The easiest way to find our videos on different subjects is to watch them on our website because they are all categorised - there's a link to it at the top of our youtube channel page - click the photo of us to get there. Or search our channel for the subject you want to find out more on.

Uh that is nifty. I gotta try that copy process myself. I know the camera can't do that, but photo editing programs that support RAW, can. Thanks!

Same as with street photography...expect for the unexpected. I'm using aparture priority taking into consideration the shutter I will get on different light changes.

Hi - I am shooting RAW for exactly the reason you said (6.10). BUT I don't use auto white balance because it causes colour shifts between images so when processing the raws I have to adjust each one at a time. By setting a white balance all the files are the same colour. When processing them I only have to colour correct one - then copy the settings across all the other files so 200 images can be corrected in 2 or 3 clicks instead of having to fiddle with them indivually. - Mike

Thank you. I use evaluative metering all the time. But I check my exposures and histograms to make sure the exposure is what i want it to be then adjust and re-shoot if I need to. Hope this helps... BTW - histogram video is /watch?v=EUm6OSJCmy4

I really like these videos. I have a good feeling for the camera I got already. But the settings I always neglected in the past were the shutter and aperture priority. I shall make a lot of use of those from now on, makes sense. Talking about making sense, why are you not using the RAW format when taking shots. You can ignore the white balance and edit the shot in the camera later on....made a world of difference in speed and quality for me.

Your vids have been an invaluable resource to me. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. One question: what metering mode did you use? I've watched your vids on metering multiple times, and I still get tripped up about it but am getting closer to a better understanding. It just takes me some time, but I am getting there. : ). Love your energy and enthusiasm. Thank you!

Which focus mode to use... One shot,Ai focus or Ai servo. And which metering mode
@MikeBrowne
@MikeBrowne 9 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you prefer to work with, the situation and shot you're taking Vivek Lath You have to learn what the different modes do, how they behave then you can chose the one you like to work with. I generally prefer single point AF (in this video I was swapping between tracking and single mode depending on what Layla was doing) evaluative metering and Aperture Priority. Have a look at these videos about AF modes - here's part 1 www.photographycourses.biz/videos/technical/getting-sharp-images/autofocus.html

Another great video Mike. I would have gone for shutter priority with kids but now you have given me another option. Just one question.....single focus mode. So once you've pressed the shutter button half down locked on the child's eyes in the middle of the frame, you can move left (child goes right) and the auto focus will stay with the child's eyes?
@MikeBrowne
@MikeBrowne 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you joe nick . Yes you can provided you have single point AF set and you keep 1st pressure on the button to lock it in place when you move the camera. make sure you don't have continuous AF set as well because then it won't work. have a look at this set of 3 videos. www.photographycourses.biz/autofocus.html

Why do photographers carry such heavy camera bags when they most likely know they'll only use maybe two different lenses and the same one camera? So much to lug!
