Photography composition isn't a technical thing. It lives outside the camera in the world around us and through your eyes. The trick is to liberate the subject from it's surroundings into a pleasing composition. It's about learning to spot the picture.
Some people can see compositions naturally and don't give it any thought, whilst others like myself, have to learn how to compose a photo by looking for and finding compositions that work as an image. And all the while you need to be considering light as well. Search our channel for our lighting videos for more on that.
The boats I photograph in this video whilst explaining the thought process that goes into composing a photo are particularly interesting. click the video location to find them.
I'm going to take you to the locations of two of my favourite images and talk you through my thoughts as a photographer when I looked for the image before composing and shooting the photo. You can begin improving your composition by joining us at www.photography... - hope to see you there soon. Mike

Don't be disappointed marlon mullon - we all have to practice and start somewhere and as you do you're compositions will improve. And don't forget just because one person doesn't like a picture it doesn't mean it's bad. It just means they don't like it. It's you that counts. I once took photos for an Airport and one image won a national award for commercial photography from Fuji. But the client didn't use it and chose one I didn't like. They weren't wrong, they just liked different a one to me.

I completely understand and have been there myself when I was a beginner. Keep practising and with time your creativity will become stronger as you exercise it. Driving around hoping for a good shot doesn't usually work. Try keeping your eyes open for possible subjects ALL the time even when your camera isn't with you. When you see something interesting make a note of where it is and go back when you can. Watch our Lighting playlist because light is more important than anything. Good luck

Hi Mike, what I extracted from this tutorial is not to be trigger happy. Having purchased my first 50mm 1.8d for my nikon, I learned to move my feet and take my time before capturing a shot. I evaluate, "Is this shot good enough", before clicking the shutter. :) Thanks for all of the help! More power!!

Thank you. I suggest having lenses that cover from 18mm to 200mm and that could be an 18-70mm and a 70-200mm or an 18-270 superzoom. The superzooms are versatile because you're only carrying one lens but image quality is not as good. If you can afford it a 10-20mm is a good one as well.

Love your videos as someone who is starting out learning about photography (as a hobby) i quite like the fact that you break it down in a way i can understand it and your tips are VERY helpful ! keep up the awesome work ! oh yes and one more thing ... THANK YOU for doing most of your tutorials in areas that are normally around you ... yes its easy to take a photo of an interesting place say the pyramids, or Stonehenge or some other globally recognizable place where as i think a lot of amateurs like me get turned off by the fact that they cant travel and forget there is a lot of beauty in their own backyards ! thank you for reminding us of that !

Thanks Anthony. Though it's still not easy to shoot amazing places. Right now I'm in the Tra Su Forest in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. It's stunning but not happy with my photos. Spent a day researching what works, what doesn't and waiting for the right light. Have been haggling with authorities this morning and have made a deal they will hire us a boat for 1 hour late afternoon when light will be better so I can shoot from the water. There's a hell of a lot of work goes into getting great pics which have nothing to do with a camera... MIKE :-)

Great final shot. That is exactly the type of shot I look to achieve. Your insight on how you finally got to that shot was inspiring and sort of gives me permission, in a way, to do what I need to do in order to get what I want. The shift from having the boats at the bottom to moving the camera to position the boats at the top was genius. This shows me to move me, move the camera, change perspective and try things. In other words, work the scene for all possibilities. Thanks, Mike. You have another fan from across the pond.

The fact that you have half a dozen you are proud of tells you that you can do it....as Mike says, keep practicing and try to keep your thought processes the same when shooting..if something doesn't work in that situation try something else, you will eventually begin to see the image before you take it. Many photographers take many shoots before they get the shoot they want as Mike may well agree, don't expect to get what you want in a single shot, that takes years of practice.
