You can shoot awesome photos on cloudy days. I get asked 'How to do photography on cloudy, grey, overcast days' a lot. Look at the light qualities (not quantity) and compose images around the light.
I'm back in Zurich at Pfäffikersee lake where I do the Zurich Masterclass. Last time it was sunny, so this time lets go find some grey day photos

Especially with clouds you can make very dramatic photos. Bumping up the contrast can give a very eerie feel to the picture. Or turning them into black and white.

After watching this vid I realised what I might have been doing wrong. I keep trying to take pictures that I think other people would like instead of taking pictures of what I like...And when I listen to Mike he always says:I think that looks nice, I like that, I like this. Maybe it's not the best thing to chase trends and just appreciate the process?

Photograph for yourself, it is less stressing. I found shooting with a Prime and manual focus have helped me to slow down and relax. At first when I got back into Photography, i was shooting to please people just to get approval. But after a while of shooting, I realized the majority of people did not have any idea of what a good picture was in this cellphone era.

@@davecrissinger8967 I only photograph for myself. I have a lot of photos on my computer, in theory I should be good, but I don't share a lot. I did share some from weekend before last, a curved railway line with lots of fashionable lens flare, a dead tree outlined against an almost blownout sky, and a rather lurid sunset, the three have proven quite popular. Probably, it helped that I used a 180mm macro lens for the tree and sunset while others were most probably using around 24mm or equivalent. I had to walk quite a way from the group to frame the tree.

I love how you look at photography not just from a technical point of view but from an emotional and psychological if you will. I often feel like going out and taking photos...I love camera technology and telling stories with the pictures I take...but something holds me back from just going outside and taking shots sometimes...the weather, fear of running around endlessly without finding the right motive. You address those "fears" in a way I have not seen on any other youtube channel. Hats off to you, Mr. Browne.

Mike, I enjoy all of your videos, but this one was a true gem for me. So often when I have the time to go outdoors with my cameras for some lens time, if the skies are grey, I end up talking myself out of going due to the "drab" color options. Thanks for waking me up to the opportunities and beauty that grey skies can offer. Thanks for the lessons!

I take lots of waterfalls in woodlands. Bright contrasting sun is often a problem so I usually prefer cloudy days for those types of shots. For me, perfect waterfall shots often result from what I call bright overcast. There is no bright sun contrast but the overcast clouds are bright enough to create faint shadows. As you said, sometimes, it is all about using the conditions and matching a shot to them.

Thanks for the histogram note Mike, I'm always glad when someone emphasizes that. The right histogram always depends on what you're photographing. E.g: You can't photograph a bright white wedding dress and believe that it has to be exposed to be in the middle. It will all be grey instead of white! - Great vid as usual!!

I love the challenge of finding a great photo on cloudy days and “bad” light. I go to national parks regardless of weather, and find the most dramatic photos I’ve done have been taken in bad weather and flat light. Using the terrain, distinctive clouds, precipitation, and changes in light give the prepared mind some excellent opportunities. Thanks for your encouragement, Mike. (Sent you a photo of Yosemite Valley: foggy, low ceilings, rain, and an instant of drama.)

It's funny when people actually say about not being able to shoot unless it's sunny. I actually prefer days like you were having in this video Mike. I think reflections work better than harsh light and so do long exposures if you want a little bit of water smoothing. It's more of a personal challenge, than just taking any old snapshot of a boat. Some really lovely shots in this.

Great video and tips. I always get people on my workshops thinking that if it's cloudy or raining there isn't a photograph to be had, but that is simply not true. If it's grey, then I look for colour in the grey such as people with colourful umbrellas or colourful leaves in autumn. Even on overcast days there are often subtle changes in light.

Hi and thank Ian. Yes completely agree. I posted an interview with photojournalist Essdras Suarez last night in which he said in his line of work he has to come up with a great shot without the luxury of time, the best light or weather. ... MIKE

This was the first video of Mike's that I found. Since then I've signed up to one of his online courses and it's making all the difference to my shots! Was in Dublin yesterday and found myself looking for the light first before a shot. What a difference it's making to my results. Cheque to the usual address, Mike. 😎
