We've looked at Shutter Speed and Aperture. Now in my ninth video of the Photography School series, it's time to look at ISO. In this presentation you will learn - in plain English - what ISO does, how it affects exposure, sharpness and image quality. If you never quite got your head around ISO, this simple, illustrated guide might be just what you need. Enjoy, and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE for more in my Photography School Series.

The tutorials have to be the BEST I've found! Thanks for your efforts. I have the G9 and Lumix 400 so you have inspired me to do much greater things with them.

Great video again. I too have been using ISO 200 whenever possible to reduce the noise although that is not always possible. Where I live, I have a tree canopy problem in my yard so, for flying bird shots, I have to bring up the ISO and can sometimes get a lot of noise in my photos. I work to take it out with LR or Luminar but not to a great extent is that possible. Again an excellent video and well explained. With your help my pictures have been improving. I did a lot of 16mm movie work on top of the water and underneath with a K100 in the 60s and 70s and then later with a Nikonis camera for stills. Keep up the good work.

Thank you James, I actually started with a K-1000 many years ago. Never shot video until very recently though so I am still on a curve. You are never to old to keep learning...

It's all about the signal to noise ratio. Every sensor, regardless of size, has inherent self noise. It's a function of being an electronic device. There is no such thing as a completely silent electronic system. Just the electricity running through the components causes noise. As you pointed out with a radio, the reduced audio signal being captured by your receiver when it isn't exactly tuned to the frequency, or is too far away from the broadcast tower to receive a strong signal, is represented as audible static. The more accurately you tune to that frequency or the closer you get to the source of the signal, the stronger it is. You'll hear far less static underneath the broadcast. That's signal to noise ratio. The stronger the signal, the greater the distance between the signal being processed and the underlying noise of the system itself. In a camera, turning up the ISO is turning up the gain. You are electronically boosting the signal being received. Your signal is light. The more light the sensor receives, the stronger the signal, and therefore, the less it has to be boosted. You've got a very good signal to noise ratio and the image processor can very easily distinguish the image component of the signal from the background noise component. In low light situations (regardless of whether the low light is caused artificially by using a very high shutter speed or closing the lens aperture), the signal is very weak. This means the signal to noise ratio is very small. By turning up the ISO, you are boosting the entire signal - noise and all. When the image processor goes to work on that boosted signal, it has a hard time differentiating what is "image" and what is "noise". Because it can't accurately represent the image information, you get the grain - which is, in effect, static. A common misconception is that ISO itself is the cause of noise. That's wholly inaccurate. The cause of noise in an image is a low signal to noise ratio. ISO doesn't cause that, lack of light does.

All absolutely correct and well explained. My intention in these videos is to explain things in very basic layman's terms to make them easy to understand for absolute beginners. I try to focus on practical application and not the science (which you clearly have a good grasp on, probably much better than me). So I like to pitch at a basic level, but I am sure many people will be interested to read the extra detail in your explanation.

@@naturesimagephotography thank you for the kind words. I've written considerably more detailed articles on my website - or at least i think I have :). If you don't mind a little self-promoting, here's a link to an article on my website: deustechmachina.com/articles/f/why-your-photos-are-grainy. That article describes in greater detail the concepts I brought up in my previous comment.

So what would be the difference between increasing the ISO, or taking an underexposed picture and increasing the brightness in photoshop? In both case you are electronically increasing the brightness, right?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 жыл бұрын
You would be better to ask a photoshop expert. But the first thing that comes to mind is potential loss of detail in the shadows. And when you brighten the shadows in an underexposed photo, you can make the noise levels worse than if you simply shot with a higher ISO in the first place.

What about using flash combined with all of this.....Do you have any videos using flash?

I hardly ever use flash. That is a whole separate learning curve, and probably best taught by people who specialise.

It was called I.S.O. for many years before some people started calling it ISO in recent years. We are both right, we are both wrong...agree to disagree.
