Photojournalist Alfred Eisenstadt Took Me To East Berlin Before The Wall Came Down

This clip presents a portion of my Emmy award-winning documentary on the great Life Magazine photojournalist, Alfred Eisenstadt (Eise). He was the favorite photographer for many famous people including Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren. He photographed for over 50 years and was doing well in prewar Germany until he had to leave for obvious reasons. I got the opportunity to take him to Germany in 1980 to experience his birth country again and to see how he felt about the West and East Germany. Of course it was still during the Cold War but he loved Germany as he once had and in making this film, viewers got a sense of the uniqueness of his character, his extraordinary photographic talent, his passion for life and his pride at being a German American. Eisenstadt's photographs made for Life Magazine are now highly collectible including his war photography, his "famous folk" photographs (as he says in the film, he usually takes only one shot!) included Hollywood stars, athletes, conductors, military people. In this description I get to say thank you to Eise for taking me on one of his projects and participating with me by allowing me to create ideas that he went along with whether he liked them or not. The documentary present scenes regarding Fassbinder the great German director, author Ernest Hemingway, scenes taken in East and West Berlin before the wall came down.

i love it! my best friend was a jewish photographer, an artist with shop in vienna and he survived the war only because his parents lied about him and said to the officers and mayor that he is no jewish and only adopted by his jewish parents, so they didn`t pick him up like all the others. from him i have still his plaubel with stativ and the yellow jewish-star that his father had to carry on his dress in the streets. he had the same typical jewish humor, bitter and sweet, i was with him and hold his hand when he died.

Absolutely fabulous. In the 1950s when I was a wee girl the occasional Life Magazine would make it's way into my rather bare life and home. I loved that magazine and would pour over those pictures over and over again. I was heartbroken when it eventually disappeared. Your work is an absolute treasure to me. Thank you so much for sharing ! You help me remember that although it sometimes seemed hard back then life was so much more free and less complicated. A life well lived and I really appreciate you. 🤗💕

Hi there David. Wow. I never heard of this guy. Wow. What a lovely humble gentle man. Of course I'm not surprised this movie won awards and that you and this man overcame those obstacles. Thank you so much. Again you were able to capture those moments in time that were so precious for all of us today to learn and grow. I feel that 30 years from now people will be talking about the "Great Film Maker David Hoffman" in the same way we are talking about this great man now. I mean this from the bottom of my heart. Blessings and Peace David 💖💖🏵😎👍

5:04 "What I am is a photojournalist...someone who records what he sees; people, events in moments in time... Some might say that I'm an artist but I wouldn't say that, an artist creates an image in his mind, what I do is try to capture reality.." 19:30 "the most important thing in photography still the eye." We come to reason through the darkness of our souls...it is from duality and juxtaposition that we form epiphanies..eisenstadt was able to see that Germany had healed from the war and grown into an art and theater mecca perhaps in a similar way that he had himself ....eisenstadt mastered the use of shadows - if you look closely you can still see the horror of WWII embedded in his work...it must have been inspiring to know that life goes on imitating art ..imitating life imitating art imitating life imitating art with no end 🎥🎬

I love the story of how they allowed the church shoot. In America, it's common for the descendants of an oppressive entity- often themselves, beneficiaries of its practices- to take the position that they personally did not participate in the oppression, that it was before they were even born, and therefore they hold no responsibility whatsoever to attempt to right the wrongs or mitigate the injustices that in their eyes, have nothing to do with them

I love walls. We have two options. We have walls that seperate us or we love one another. And since the 2nd option will never happen, walls may be our only option. If it were possible that humans could love one another then the John Lennon song "Imagine" would be a reality by now, it was released in 1971. We've had more than enough time for "Imagine" to happen. It ain't happening. It's time we face the music, face reality, we are never going to love one another. And since loving one another isn't ever going to be a reality, our only option, is walls. The fact that one side of the wall was happy people and the other side miserable people tells us everything we need to know about humans. Some humans are wired differently than others, some are wired to be happy and some are not. Those who are wired to be happy should be able to live in a world without those who are not wired to be happy. As they say one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. So, the only way to be happy is to seperate all the people who wont be happy from those who will, and the sooner the better. The Declaration of Independence tells us we have the God given Right to "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" I say if we are ever going to have a real chance at pursuing happiness we must seperate into two groups. The people who are a roadblock to our happiness that we seek, they must go, they gotta be on the other side of a wall, seperated from the rest of us. A house divided against itself cannot stand. And the two groups will never unite, so, since they will never unite, we will never be happy, because there'll always be people that want to ruin our chance at the pursuit of happiness. I say, we get rid of those party poopers, we seperate the country into two seperate groups, form two seperate countries, put up a wall between us, and call it a day. The minute we do that, we'll be happy. I believe in walls. In fact, I'm a big believer in walls. I love walls. I find walls work. I dont feel walls are the problem, I feel that people are the problem. And some people will never change, so, they'll never be happy. So the unhappy people will always drag down the happy people. Now, some may feel that my philosophy is a downer, or making them unhappy, my talks sounds so negative, so dark, but in reality those who think they're happy have no idea how happy that they really could be if we seperate ourselves from all the unhappy people. Until that happens we are living in an ignorant bliss. Thinking we're happy but having no idea how much more happy we could be. Think tropical Island happy. We would be so much happier without the unhappy people. Wait till you're not around unhappy people anymore. Then you'll know real happiness. In fact, even God believes what I'm saying. Do you think there are unhappy people in Heaven? No. Why is that? Because all the unhappy people didn't make it. Do you see, even God believes in seperating happy people from the unhappy people. The happy people go to one place while the unhappy goes to the other. The song Come out and Play by the band Offspring said it best. You gotta keep em seperated. I'm not talking about unhappy people seeking happiness, seek and ye shall find. I'm talking about people who refuse to be happy and ruin everyone else's life, they'll never be happy. They're going to Hell. I say those types of people who are going to Hell, they need to be removed from our country. I don't give a shit who they are. To all those people I say... "You're not going to ruin my pursuit of happiness I say get the hell out! I dont want you. I dont need you. And I'm damn sure ain't interested in anything you're selling, whatever your selling I ain't buyin' take your shit and get out you unhappy miserable excuse for a human being. Get the hell out of my country and stop dragging me down! Now get on your side of the wall and I'll stay on mine. And good riddens, Who needs ya! I really like walls. You ever wonder why we put evil people in prisons. To keep em seperated from the rest of us. You ever wonder why some people go to Heaven and some people go to Hell In other words some people go to the happy place and some people dont. Let it be done on earth as it is heaven. Gotta keep em seperated. There are sheep and there are wolves. Gotta keep em seperated. Walls work.
