As many of you know, I am a collector old 16mm films, especially ones that deal with the social issues Americans and others were involved with over the last 60 years, especially the 1950s and 1960s. The organization that is being shown in this documentary is called Fascinating Womanhood, and they had a rather precisely developed set of techniques that held the man from going astray. Reducing or eliminating extramarital affairs. It involved basically doing what your husband wanted and needed and putting yourself aside as his wife. It was based on certain Christian values but not connected to the church in any way. The organization still exists. And I know that some percentage of women practice what they taught and believe it is the "right thing to do." I can't speak to that but for myself, my wife would be sickened by having to behave in this way. I do believe that a strong marriage is one of the best most wonderful experiences in life and hope it for everyone watching this clip.
There have been so many comments by subscribers and viewers presenting different points of view towards this issue. Some feels strongly that women should stand by and support their men and be subservient to them. Some feel that will make the strongest marriage and partnership. Some feel that God has designed marriage that way - that women should be second to their husbands. Some commentators indicate that this works for them. Others feel exactly the opposite. They describe abusive relationships where the boss, the man, is abusive and often times wrong in his judgment that he knows better than she does. In my own relationship which is very successful, we have different strengths my wife and I put in many many areas, she is more right than I am because she is using a gut instinct that I just don’t seem to have. When it comes to my filmmaking, I’m the best add it and she feels that I am a very good dad. I'm the best at that. And some other areas as well. But in many many areas of our lives, certainly in the personal areas like our home and the food we eat and who to trust, it is she and her incredible gut instinct that drives us both in certain directions and towards certain people and away from others.

Desperate & very fearful of change. My mom who was born in 1919. She was never a submissive woman. Her mom was a Suffragette! These women were country women. Very domestic & very strong. I have never been submissive, I am quite fair minded though. My husband & I have been married 40 years. We have never had the audacity to have to run each other down. Some women like to be submissive but were not raised to submit to someone unworthy of them. Getting a good husband is probably like getting a good boss in those days they appreciate you or don't you have creative freedoms or you don't. I used to work in retail and hear all the divorce stories many women were submissive and pretty could cook etc. that did not mean their husband would respect them or be loyal if they are not of that temperament or were not raised to value their spouse they won't regardless of the woman.

I feel the HAPPIEST when my HUSBAND is happy. When I see pride..respect..joy on his face for me, that makes ME happy! And I’ve felt the LOWEST when I knew I let him down; when I saw him disappointed, or hurt; when I was being selfish or greedy or didn’t consider his feelings or wishes or wants...that hurts MY heart. If this Thought process is reciprocated...Then I really do think you’ll have a great, lasting marriage. We got married in 1968 and he was 22 and I was 20. I acted like a brat when my husband and I were first married. He was patient and kind because he knew I was brought up by very strict parents and I wanted to feel free and unrestricted by anyone. One day he just asked me to do something, I can't remember what and I yelled at him that he was not my father. He very quietly said, "I'm your husband who loves you. What do you need from me?" That made me cry. He was the most loving person I have ever known and I was acting like a spoiled child. That wasn't the last time I was that bratty. It took me awhile to see that we were truly equals and he was head of the family, but he was not the boss of me. God blessed us with children and he lived to see grandchildren. I miss him terribly even after 18 years, he loved me and only me. That's a gift from God and I thankful for the time we were together. ❤

The divorce rate was growing rapidly in the 50's, 60's, and 70's... This was an attempt to make couples try to understand each others needs, before just throwing the towel in... When couples can't compromise, and try to understand each other, and show each other the love they deserve, the union will fall apart... The divorced mother and father usually recover from the ended marriage with success, however the children from failed marriages suffer...

My mother (1902-1997) never could understand the "woman's" movement. She always loved and deferred to men. At every meal we ate in the dining room, my father in his three-piece suit, my mother dressed beautifully and serving graciously because that's the way he liked it and she liked it. She always carried a linen handkerchief in her hand because she thought it was the ladylike thing to do. My father liked to smoke and my mother liked the taste of it and would have liked to smoke when they married in 1923, but he didn't think it was ladlylike, so she didn't--my father died in 1958 at 59 of lung cancer and my mother lived 39 more years without him. Mother thought women should be ladies first and didn't have any respect for those who didn't fit the bill. She didn't know how to open a door, thought the man should open it for her and stand up when she left table. All the woman in their circle of 12 couples whom they met in 1924 through her best friend Olna were very much like my mother and lived to great old age, my mother was the last one left when she passed away on Mother's Day, 1997 at 94, still living alone and driving her car every day.

@@spicydamesvintagejewelryth2155 Thanks, Spicy! My parents' referred to their friends variously as the "gang" or the "bunch". After a nice meal prepared by the lady of the house, the ladies would play bridge and the men would retire to a small recreation room where they played poker for a couple of hours. In 1954, they had a big party at the local country club to celebrate 30 years and it was based on the popular TV show of the time This is Your Life. Enid and Willie B. Wilie were the oldest of the group and got it started and my parents were last couple to join them. Each would say a few words out of sight before coming out to great applause and enjoyment. The real show presented the subject with a new car and in this case Enid and Willie B. were given a 1/25 scale model yellow AMT 1954 Chevrolet. I would see that car through the years because I collected them and wished they would give it to me, but I guess some family member got it when they passed, probably didn't even know what it represented.

I think you guys missed the entire point of marriage. the biggest problem with marriage is that it's now being controlled by religion. Marriage from the start had nothing to do with religion it had to do with property. then the Christians came along. So you only trust men based on money? Until we fix how we do things, which will take a decade at least, most men will not make enough. If everyone went out today to do what it took, everything would stop. The things that make enough money can only be done by a few, and they are rarely production jobs. If everyone is an entrepreneur, nobody is an employee. This is why men obsess about money and status and have to be aggressive; they have to fight for resources to have any say in who they get to marry.

It's an arrangement. You make the food, I bring the food. If I can't bring the food properly, I can't expect you to make it properly. However, it should be considered that making food only requires the food being there (other than my effort). But bringing food requires a working outside economy. So there's some imbalance in that arrangement. So, if the economy is really bad, it's understandable that the man may have difficulty completing his part of the arrangement. In that case, the couple should consider finding some other arrangement that works, like switching roles, or maybe both doing both roles.

I'm glad there are submissive women so I don't have to be one. I love men, but for the most part I think the majority of them are clueless about women and a lot of things. Men and women are from different planets. I divorced my husband after 10 years of marriage because of his drinking. His drinking was escalating and I told him to get help and quit or I was leaving him. A year later I left him. He went to go see an attorney and the attorney told him "your wife is not ripping you off, let her handle this." I did not rip him off and I made it so easy for my attorney that she refunded $500. That was a surprise. My husband and I remained friends for the rest of his life, but I didn't have to live with him anymore. I was at his side when he died in the hospital. Drinking was a large part of why he died and he was still in denial that he was an alcoholic. May he R.I.P.

From a gen z perspective, I find it really interesting that they seem to conflate submission with communication and compromise. It seems like their strategy for sparking compromise was to always have the woman raise the olive branch first. This would be rather unattractive to me personally since trust and communication accomplish the same thing without sacrificing equality, but I can see the value that it would have to a relationship if it is a mutually understood and VALUED aspect of the relationship.

When I think of my ancestors who lived very poor, struggling to survive, the men and women worked side by side together. The hand movements they were concerned with were to grow and raise their own food, make clothes and keep shelter over their heads. The women also fended off an invading army at home while the men were away fighting. When you look back through history that was the kind of life and marriage most people had. Submissive femininity is only possible with high levels of economic and political stability, and a very secure income coming in to the home. It boggles the mind that what these ladies are talking about is considered "traditional." I see it as very modern.

Even when men and women worked together they did not always have the same responsibilities around the land women did not fend off armies at home the men fended them off. Women often looked to men for protection rich or poor. Men and women had different responsibilities women usually cooked, watched kids, made the clothes(even most clothes making industries had women making them), washed the clothes, and did most of the non labor intensive work. The issue is these women worked but not same jobs nor in the same intensity as the men. If a man couldnt get his own land or wasn’t a serf had to work in a different field lots of times long hours and more deadly jobs that paid more. Submissive femininity happens at every level you have poor people back then who had their “good robes” or “good dress” that they brought out for occasion. Many women still tried to look good for their men. This is traditions always has been ways will be as men and women at the top and bottom of the economic scale like the same things. These are biological attractions and predestined behaviors. These behaviors are literally still seen today in many traditional societies that haven’t had the plague of feminism. You can go to Africa, Asia, Latin America and still find women who conduct themselves in this manner. Men and women toiled together that does not mean we toiled the same way.

Agnieszka Furtak. I’m not an expert on Jordan Peterson, but the videos I have seen he does challenge men to get their act together. MGTOW is more men feeling like the current marriage laws (really divorce and custody laws) are so skewed to women, that it’s too much of a gamble to even get married or have kids. I don’t really disagree with them, as men often lose a lot more in divorce than women. Women are even encouraged by lawyers to say he was abusive. Their solution is more to just focus on yourself, career, hobbies, friends, etc, and don’t buy into the Hollywood happily every after wife, kids, picket fence. Because in a decade when she files for divorce, you’re paying for that house with a picket fence while you live in a one bedroom apartment, and will be lucky if you get to see your kids two weekends a month.

This era was so iconic for it's fashion, and they're hair-do's..this was a time where everyone was expressing themselves, (and they're opinions) Everyone wants to be happy, of course, and this era is no different..in the end, it all boils down to the fact, that we all want happiness, and for the happiness and safety of our loved ones. Well teach on! Nowadays the statistics are horrible and folks don't trust each other. It is needed, the trends only get worse. These used to be the basics, now they are revolutionary and radical counter culture. Tradition is foundational to a thriving society and sustainable for generations. This teaching was kept from everyone in the miseducation system when I came up but the psychological research in gender relationships showed all this was true and that militant Feminism was destroying our communities. Now men are being taught just as destructive ways due to lack of proper male leadership and fear of being exploited. The gender war has worsened. I have found very few men teaching authentic traditional values and only a couple women teaching it correctly for the females. As a man that knows how rare it is to find, this movement was refreshing to learn about. I found your channel and you have a new subscriber. Is there a male equivalent to teach the next generation of boys how to be good men, fathers, and how to pick good Women? Thanks for your work. As I teach in the rough modern climate, protect yourselves at all times, protect the children at all ages, and protect the family at all costs. Peace and power.

My daughter, now 19 read the Fascinating Girlhood in junior high and began to practice the suggestions. She became all the boys' favorite girl, but never had a boyfriend because she held her standards high. Now with a really good young man who had to figure how to turn the other interested boys away from her in high school, (THAT was funny to watch!) he is eager to marry her after their sophomore college year.🤭 The formula works. I could explain more about the submissive part that gets so many angry, but it's really something we can all agree with -- it's difficult but there has to be order in the home to get things done. A book could be written on that subject alone.

I see so many women holding onto some scumbag husbands. Back in the day the man was the provider so a lot of women felt they had to hold onto them to maintain they're standard of living. I noticed this with my mother. My dad was in control. I didn't like that idea. I was a middle child, female with 4 brothers. So I decided never to depend on a man for anything, to always have my own earned money and not have to go asking him for shopping money. I really don't care about their ego. That's their problem. Like I said, they were not emotionally ready for my brand of woman. They tried to tear me down and make me feel inferior. That's why I never stayed married. He is masculine he submits by showing love. A relationship needs both roles. A woman shouldn't be tough/masculine and man shouldn't soft/feminine. Each role is important in marriage. This clip has me wondering if “The Stepfford Wives” is based upon this movement? It sounds positively medieval. Essentially the philosophy is that a woman should accept any type of treatment/behavior of her husband with open arms, while the husband suffers no negative consequences, thereby reinforcing his negative behaviors toward here. I was born in 68. A lot of this type thinking persisted even into the 80s in many parts of the country, Assertive, independent women were often labeled “aggressive,” & “forward.”

Funny you mention physical abuse towards women. My mother, back when my parents were together, punched my father and slapped him repeatedly and threw stuff at him during arguments and he never went to the police. You know what was the worst my father did? He punched the wall... You want to know what changed in our society? Our social expectations toward each other has changed in dating and marriage. No one wants to understand but they want to be understood. No wants to help but they want to be helped. As a sidenote, there is abuse towards women and men in relationships. The difference is there is no battered shelter for men and no shoulder to cry on. Hey I'm all for womens rights and feminism but as a society we have shifted in the wrong direction in SOO many ways. I personally can't stand someone who would abuse their wife or girlfriend. And just thinking about sexual assault victims makes me extremely angry at the state of our world, at the perpetrators. We have to stand up for each other and not just look at it simply as "mens" or "womens" issues. I fully support equal pay, equal opportunity for women. And strong and independent women. But to be in a relationship you have to share your life and give away a little of your independence(not all of it, just a little) for a powerful, deep and lasting relationship. This goes for men and women.

I believe this is a very good thing but don't attempt this with a Narscisst, addict or womanizer!! The book is available now free on line as a download. Thousands of copies have sold and the reviews are all positive. Women tell about how much better their marriage is. This works because of the principal of polarity. The more feminine s woman is the more masculine a man will be. Feminism doesn't work because being like a man is just going to create tension and is a turn off to men! p.s. *this doesn't mean you ever take any abuse!

Hey David, I'm typing this because I know there's a good chance you'll read this. I'm a 21 yo boy from semi rural Finland. I came across one of your videos i think a coupe of years back, when i was doing a lot of psychedelics. We all know why people use drugs but i like to think im trying to learn something from them rather than get the dopamine, hence why i only use(d) psychedelic drugs. I can't remember exactly which video it was, but i remember how intriguing it was and how i was genuinely interested on what the speaker had to say next, and how cool i thought he was. Your head must be so far in the future, because i for once couldn't honestly even care what's going on around the world. Because it's so insignificant and small. But you KNOW someone will love seeing it and look back how things were, even if it didn't feel important at all at the time. Maybe that's just becoming wiser and growing up(you will never get old ;) your body will). Anyway i just come across your videos almost every time im stoned or just not sober, ;), and i just get so lost in the stories while feeling warm. You earned your chocolate today. Nice weekend David and keep looking forward.

It takes a really man who has moral values, is respecful to others and himself to appreciate a women as such, who allows her husband to be the king of his domain while she's holds the title as queen. All I can say is the 20 years with my wife has been a blessing for she's my angel, best friend, the lover of my dreams and the most beautiful women in my life. I've never taken advantage of her submissive character for I always treat my wife as an equal and will always respect, protect and do anything in my power to make sure that I appreciate everything she has done for me and that is allowing me to be the man that I am today.

Too bad I was too young in the 60's to have seen this video then I wouldn't have had to wait and work it out for myself. any Man worth his salt would not need nor require his woman to be "submissive" if any man's ego is that fragile than you need to find a new man! this is the first time David Hoffman has posted something that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. 😔 I'm sad for our country and our culture. no human should have to be subjected to being ruled over by another. I've come to realize that it's mostly the Christian culture that believes this. most non Christians that I have met, don't equate their marital life with some religious hierarchy. and I still can't believe anybody would be happy being a servant through a man with a really fragile ego. smh

I find it interesting (let alone a little disturbing) how these pro-femininity movements seemed to revolve so much around being married - even the ones today are like that. As a single, childfree, career-focused woman, I don't think I could get into this or that I would be accepted. Groups and movements like this sometimes make me feel that I have to be married to a man in order to be feminine, and I know that isn't true. I am feminine because I was born female and choose to stay that way.

If I had been that type, our little family would never have survived hard economic times that came when he lost jobs. If I hadn't taken charge because I had been through such things in my own childhood, I don't know what would have happened. I was the one who made our clothes, who threw together meals out of next to nothing, who came up with whatever strategies were needed, who kept a copy of the Merck Manual to look up ailments to decide what could be treated at home, etc. I got married right after having been released from a mental institution. I was still in warrior mode. Submission? A word in someone else's dictionary.

The main thing here is that the women are being proactive in trying to improve their relationships, so it isn't a role being forced upon them. Men are readily told that they are supposed to live up to certain expectations, and women too need to realise that men don't marry women just to get regular sex, as the clip points out. Clearly the best chance relationships can have is when both parties have the other's best interests in mind without it meaning that either of them are doormats for the other. It's all about mutual consideration for each other.

Okay,...give the illusion to the husband that he’s in control so that he doesn’t have to go chase it elsewhere. 🙄 that’s also the message in the comedy movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. The wife tells her daughter: “The man is the head, but the woman is the Neck and she can turn the head anywhere she wants.” Me personally, if a guy can’t handle it, it’s over. Remember that video you posted, directed?, the wife asks her husband why he’s never home. Going out late/ having an affair. It’s tricky.

I’m female. Am not single. Have kids. I think I have a problem with women being put down, and told to be quiet, just because they have a female anatomy. The man is being manipulated to stroke his ego. He’s weak, if that’s the case, and therefore, not for me- I’d leave him.

Omar Ignacio Silvestrini - if a male can’t handle a woman wanting to be his equal. Hes not above doing house chores, child rearing, changing diapers, dirty work..and she doesn’t need to be: “okay. Okay whatever you say, sir. You’re the man of the house and therefore my lord. I’m at your feet.. My king.” The catch being in the book she is with “a good man”. He could be a good guy when courting, then turn out to be a narcissist. Hence, divorce. If a man has to be superior to feel like a man- I am not putting up with that. To each their own.

@@BJ-mb2ug I agree with you and I am a man. I would add if a woman has to be superior to feel more secure, or to feel like a woman, no man should ever put up with that. Men and women are equals and should support each other. Sometimes though, the man must have the final say and other times the woman. It is up to each couple to work out the strengths each one has, recognize them and act accordingly. It can not always be 50/50, but sometimes it will be 49/51 in either one's favor, that's life.

I think this is why some today say, "Marry your perfect husband/wife second." I know in my case it has worked out to be a better, solid, loving, kind and lasting relationship. I think my first wife would say the same of her second and current marriage. Women are smart to have standards and hold to them. In turn, a real man should look for and appreciate a woman with standards The free love cultural revolution we remember is probably why there are so many screwed up households and absentee fathers today. As corny as they sound in this excellent documentary film, I think these women may have a good point.

The character traits that would have a man love and care for a woman is continually being held back by most men for sensible reasons.
