My tips are when shooting the milky way in a dark sky with no light pollution the histogram only needs to come across from the left halfway! To check if your stars are in focus take a test shot and if the stars look bloated it is sign of either the focus is still not sharp or your lens is dirty! If you don't own a star tracking device do an image stack I've found that twenty images stacked is a sweet spot! My last tip is when editing in photoshop go to the channels in photoshop there will be four layers first is the rgb layer followed by red,green and blue, find the best layer out of red,green and blue with the most details in the core of the milky way click on it go select all copy then click the rgb layer then paste! Set the blend mode to luminosity open the layer you just pasted in camera raw make some adjustments to highlights, blacks ,whites and shadows but only small amounts this should bring out more details in the milky way!

Another way of sharpening (and also lighting) is capturing 2 different shots and then blending them: one with the sky in focus and the second one with the foreground in focus and with an exposure time of about 1-2 minutes (just to capture more light on the foreground). Thanks for this great video :)

Tip to avoid the problem at 4:10: go to places where other people don't go. Or go when they won't go (cold, weekdays, etc). I have never shot a location where I wasn't friends with the other photographers at the site. In that case, we can coordinate lighting periods so we don't mess each other up. I usually go alone and then I don't have to worry at all. I don't think I have much desire to ever shoot a place where there are gatherings of photographers shooting the same scene.

Quick question, If PP says the MW is visible between 3 & 5 am, will it be most vissible (or stand out more) at 4 am which is rite in the middle or is it the same thru out with just a different position. I guess I should turn off Long Noise Reduction for a stacking5 or more photos also? Thanks for any replies.

Hi. I am a photopiller but planning with the app, there is one thing I don't understand. Tomorrow I will be 2000 metres up in the mountains. How can I calculate how much of the Milky Way I will be able to see? My fear is that I will be too tall and the mountains will cover it. I should plan ahead to avoid unnecessary weight. Help me please 🤔

Hey! You can use the Black Pin, put it on the mountains, align it with the Milky Way (moving time) and Panel 2 (black pin panel) will tell you the height of the MW above the mountains.

Hello PhotoPills Specialists, do you have an idea, why Night-AR doesn't work on iPhone 11 pro max? Software-Version 15.7 on iPhone I get a message 'Wait for valid compass values.'
@PhotoPills
@PhotoPills Жыл бұрын
Hi Hermann, First of all, check you are not using a case with a magnet. There are cases that have magnets or metallic structures that affect the accuracy of the compass or it doesn't allow the compass to read a good value. So, if you use a case, remove it just in case to be sure it doesn't affect the compass. Even plastic cases could have a metallic structure inside. Then reboot your iPhone as explained in this article: support.apple.com/guide/iphone/force-restart-iphone-iph8903c3ee6/ios And finally do the 8-figure gesture until the spinner disappears. We recommend doing it every time you use the Augmented Reality view, even in cases that the spinner doesn't appear, like 4 or 5 times. It improves the accuracy of the compass sensor a lot. We show how to do it in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5qHdbJ7yrGuXWQ.html Let's see if this fixes the problem.

great video, you guys are awesome. my two cents; one, you mention not using white light, it destroys night vision (I dont have much prob). use a *hands free* light source with red in it (not real original but true). I use a head lamp with white and red light, using red only, once beginning shooting. also keep 2nd flashlight in pocket with extra batteries in your bag. two is re light pollution. I just bought a LiPo filter (~$50 on Amazon) havent used yet. can you try several and evaluate? I go to dark skies 5-6x/yr but practice 20 mins from my house at a lake just outside a major city, so its pretty light polluted. hope filter alleviates some of that. also appreciate comments re photo stacking and use of water in foreground. guy named Eric Pare does *awesome* light painting too w/tubes. check him out, he's way good.
