Photoshop - Paths with Holes - Making Better Cutouts
Learn how to make holes in vector paths so your cutouts have areas in them where the background appears through them. For this you need to make your second path and then use the options in Photoshop to control how the two paths interact to get the final result that you desire. I'll show you how this is done and how you can check your work in the Paths panel to make sure that everything is working as you expect it to work.
The skills in this video will add to your expertise in Photoshop and help you create more sophisticated cutouts.

Glad it was helpful! If you can tell me what you were looking for maybe I can add more keywords to this video to make it easier to find. I found it hard to describe what I was doing here!

What sorted it for me was realizing that cutting out a 2nd path had to start out on the same path as the original. For too long, I wasn't paying attention to path operations because I thought you had to make the path and then apply the operations - that didn't work. Because of your video, I realized that you have to start out in a 'combined-path' state and then apply the operative at the end (at least, that's what's worked for me so far). If a person doesn't start in a 'combinded-path' state in the beginning, you'll end up with 2 different paths and the operatives don't work b/c they're not relating to one another. Further, your example of 'exclude overlapping shape' works when both are selected and on the same path layer. Also, @mrtom64 was right as well (altho' a little indignant) that you could have also just chosen the last path drawn and subtracted it. In the end, the takeaway is - make sure you're on the same path layer when you start out. It was not that intuitive for me but then, as my teacher would say: Ronnie, you're the smartest one in the dumb row....!

I love your teacher, I am going to borrow that comment from them! That said, I am so glad you now know how to do this Ron and BTW your teacher wasn't correct - anyone who actually reads the comments to see what they can glean from them graduated the "Dumb row" a long time ago!

Thank you for letting me know. If you have a minute could you tell me what you were typing as your searches? If I can improve my title, description and tags I might be able to help more people. I found it difficult to describe just what I was doing here and that’s key to you being able to find this video.

I think your "funky" experience is down to your selected sub-paths rather than a PS issue. In your 'donut' example you select BOTH sub-paths before applying the path operation, had you of left just the center circle selected then 'Subtract Front Shape' would have worked just fine, as it did later in the VW example. Quite why the option is to subtract the front 'Shape' when dealing with paths is a mystery but still, it does actually work as expected....you just have be careful which sub-paths are selected when you use it. Thanks for the upload, appreciated as always.
