@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 жыл бұрын
To 'let down' means to disappoint -- this is almost always a negative thing. To 'let up' simply means to stop, as in 'my brother was teasing me and he wouldn't let up' or 'Ever since I woke up, the noise in my apartment building hasn't let up'. I hope this answers your question.

Yes that's a very common expression. A few examples would be: 'That party was off the hook! I had such a good time." Or "Have you heard that new song? It's off the hook, yo!"

Why didn't we say "nicely and slowly" in the example of "let sth down" Aren't they adverbs? Thanks in advance
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, normally an adverb would, of course, modify a verb. However, in this case, 'nice and slow' acts as an adverbial phrase; so the expression would normally be 'to let someone down nice an slow'. Great question, thanks for mentioning it.

I m going to make some sentences below: 1/ she was let down because her boss didnt keep the promise that give her the rise. 2/New building will let the guest in by August of 2016. 3/He always let his ex-girl friend in on what is going on his daily life. 4/ we let the fish out in to the river during the traditional season in Viet Nam. Thanks so much.

Dear prof I was wonderig if I might dare to ask You a question ? Why did You use "Will" with schedule time? Let me explain presently: I would have used present simple future meaning . What Time does the English class let out? What time does today's class Let out? Thank you kindly and I beg your pardon for disturbing you. I pay my respects to you. A
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea. That's a great point! Using the simple present with future meaning would be very natural in this situation as you wrote. However, we could still use the simple future as in 'what time will class let out?' Both choices would be fine and both would be grammatically correct. Thanks for checking out the video!

That's amazing dr teacher but one thing really bother me. That is WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN *PHRASEL VERBS *and *IDIOMS*? As an idiom literal meaning differs greatly from the figurative meaning and also in case of phrasel verb we don't take its literal meaning. Simply i wanna say that in both cases we don't take its literal meaning . What is the difference between both? Are they different in structure? Or something else. Hope u will understand what i wanna say. And bundle of thanks for such nice videos.....
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 6 жыл бұрын
Hi tabish khan, that's a fair question. Basically, a phrasal verb is almost always either 'verb + preposition' ('wake up' or 'get on') or 'verb + preposition + preposition' ('go in on' or 'look forward to'). An idiom, on the other hand, could be any combination of words ('bury the hatchet', 'be in hot water', or 'throw someone under the bus'). Hope that is clear.
@tabishkhan9843
@tabishkhan9843 6 жыл бұрын
Dr teacher exactely you are right. Something like they both r different in structures as u explained very well like in phrasel verb we deal with verb and preposition and in idioms we could have combination of any words .....but pls would you like to tell me from where phrasel verb and idiom meaning come.. Also bundle of thanks for the response and that information was helpful.
