Phthalo Green mixed with Pyrrol Crimson or a lightfast shade of Alizarin crimson produces the blackest blacks that have life in them. I really like the earthy muted greens when mixed with Quinacridone Gold. It’s all about mixing Phthalo Green with other colours to see what you can come up with. Thanks Jay. It’s interesting how very similar they all appear.

I don't use it as much for greens, unless mixed with an orange to make it more earthy. I do love it for mixing deep darks and rich purples.

All these versions look super nice. I use a lot of PG7 but a little goes a long way and a tuber lasts forever, lol. White Nights PG7 is a bit less pigmented and that makes it perfect for more controlled use. If I want intensity I grab the Mijello. I agree with the comment that suggested mixing it with oranges to make more natural greens. Although I mostly enjoy using its "artificial" look as its strength, for providing an unnatural atmosphere. Also love mixing it and pairing it with magenta and Perylene Colors. a comparison with PG36 would be useful for sure, if you have any.

I happen to love PG7... also love Winsor Green (blue shade) ... I'm a beginner, so I don't mix colors often. I just enjoy the vibrant colors in watercolor and experiencing a whole new world! Thank you! 😊

I have had the same QOR version for years now. A little dab'll do ya. I use Pyrrole Red 254 to subdue it, I can get a great Perylene green or even an almost completely neutral colour (light or almost black).

I love PG7, it is definitely one of the most valueable mixing colors for me. Obviously with yellows and oranges for all types of greens, but also with purple for stunning dark blues, and reds and pinks for a whole range of greys from light to dark. I own this pigment from a variety of manufacturers, both in student and artist quality, and they are all quite good. PG7, as well as the other phthalos, seem to be more consistent in quality amongst the various manuacturers than other pigments are. I think I will go swatch them all out next to eachother, just to see where the differences lie. Hope you are going to have a happy New Year!

I use Daniel Smith pthalo green blue shade as a mixing colour. Mixed with indigo for sap greens, mixed with quin gold for natural earthy greens or mixed with primary yellow for spring greens. You can get manganese blue by adding a tiny bit to cobalt blue or ultramarine or add a bit more to get turquoise. It’s worth spending some time just playing with different mixes and seeing what you can get, sometimes you only need a tiny amount because it’s a strong pigment so you won’t run out for a while.

I like using PG7 with earth tones and browns. It also makes interesting blues paired with lilacs, but it is just easier to use a ready blue. The cotman one is easy to use as it not that overpowering. I also have a tube of White Knights PG7 which was too separated and then (kinda) exploded when I opened it, staining clothes and pallet. It was a disaster. Lesson learnt, only buy PG7 in pans.

I struggle with phtalo green mixes as well and tested a number of different mixes to find something useful. Red ochre and bit of quin gold gives a nice muted green. That one was my favorite that day

I have PG7 in DS and DV. They are pretty similar to each other and both paint very nicely. However, I tend to go with M Graham's Viridian PG18 instead. It doesn't take over the entire palette the way PG7 can if you aren't careful. lol

Merry christmas and happy new year 🥳, for me any PG7 will work, student or artist, i think van gogh is the perfect one for me, i usually only use this color for making neutral with red or turquoise with blue, i rarely use it to make green which is kinda funny if you think about it.

I have the schminke one, I really like it! I mix it with lemon yellow to get a range of light greens.. Schminke horadam is so smooth and a joy to work with but I also have a student grade palette of Cotman and VG pans for sketches. Cotman version will be the one added to that palette😉

Following on from Mark Donovan I have a couple of PG7s and recently acquired a viridian from Jackman’s watercolors (not Jackson’s). I haven’t had a chance to do any painting with the viridian yet, just swatching. I love both PG7 and viridian. I love the power of PG7 and the softness of viridian. Happy Holidays!

I'm sitting here with my swatch card comparing colors as I wanted to see this color, and believe or not the Daniel Smith is very close in color to the Koh-I-Noor blue green watercolor pencil, I'd love to get it in the tube paint but the price of DS is to steep here in the states 😣

I like the look of the Lukas a lot more than the others. Also as it has those other tones of green it might mix down to a more earthy green? Maybe it is better if such a dominant colour is not so flowy? The more blues versions remind me more of water than of plants, but maybe that is just me. I am not that keen on pthalo colours even though I know there would be a big gap without them. I don’t use them much as they tend to take over. I prefer granulating blues mixed with warm yellows. I guess it all depends on what kind of style you like. Nice comparison though. Maybe other than the Schmincke you have used tube colours? I think PG7 is present in the WN, RG, and Szmal ranges. I have a bit of a flirtation going on with cobalts though a lot of people are veering away from pigments now considered toxic, I think many of those we are now moving to are also likely to be considered toxic in the future, so maybe responsible disposal is equally important.
